Hello,
Which Laney head?
-
VC50, VH100
The GH can get good(ish) cleans with the volume knob on your guitar rolled down.
VH100 and VC50 have dedicated clean channels.
-
^ +1, i'd add the tt too. wee bit less modern than the vh, but for classic metal, i'd say it has more than enough gain.
-
You will want to stay away from the GH50L, 1 channel amp and no reverb.
I have a VC50 combo which is the combo version of the VH100R head, perfect for what you need imo.

Why stay away from the GH50? It sounds almost identical to yours on the drive channel and it probably cleans up the same. It may not be what hes after but I don't think anyone should stay clear of it. Natural reverb ftw!!
I`d get a VH100R if you need a seperate clean channe;. Very versatile and should sound pretty damn good. TT's are fairly nice too.
I`m gonna recommend the GH50L overall purely based on the fact its a monster and you can clean it up :) Plus you can spend the money you save over the VH100R on a reverb pedal!!

I agree. The GH50L cleans up well, especially with singlecoils. I prefer being able to adjust the level of gain with my volume instead of using a switch to go from drive to clean (then again I dont really like "proper" cleans). Also, I've found that I dont really miss reverb that much, you dont really need it when playing in a band, the only time I've wanted it is playing at home occasionally.. and if you're only playing at home, then you dont even need a GH50L, because its not exactly a quiet amp

Did I mention its an animal??

LH50R
look no further. GH50L gain (without the boost) and fender-ish cleans. 2 channels w/ independent EQ and volume
but they are a bit hard to find

It depends what he wants to play, if he is playing with a lot of gain he won't get good cleans, and if he is playing with medium gain he still won't get that good cleans.
If you need a good clean sound you then need a dedicated clean channel.
-
I`m not sure. Toms showed me a few clips where his guitars clean up quite nicely. Its not shimmering cleans, more marshally cleans. Depends how you define clean I guess.
-
Well hopefully he will reply saying what kinda cleans he wants, i'm just guessing here
-
he put "good" clean tones. What does good mean?

As a LH50R ( 50 watt head ) owner, I can confirm the above. I used to use mine on clean over 75% of the time and it always delivered. The cleans on a LH50R are warmer sounding than a Fender 'Twin' and do 'retro' styles very nicely. The gain channel is a monster by comparison.

I presume he means what I strive for in clean tones, no grit, grain, or excess sharpness.
A reviewer over on Harmony Central said the Laney LH50R had "oily cleans" - meaning that there is a desirable roundness there, even when using high treble and the 'Bright' switch on.

Thanks everybody

If your using a distortion pedal then the amps distortion won't matter so I'd say get a GH50L because you can just use the Laney as a clean sound and the pedal as your distortion which is what it seems you do anyways.

MM Ok

I'll do a clip soon of my Charvel with a bridge Rebel Yell into my GH50L going from a classic metal tone to clean using the guitars volume and disengaging the drive boost. To get good cleans when rolling off the guitar volume though, you really need to do the treble bleed mod (capacitor across the volume pot basically), otherwise I find it sounds too dull, but thats the same with any guitar in my experience.

Maybe a stupid question, but I really like to know:
I like to eq the distorted sound from the pedal by myself, so I always try to get a very good hardrock sound out of it.
***Does the pedal with the same eq as usually, sound more heavy and raw through the GH50L due to the speakers they use in it???
I don't want to sound like I'm playing the distortion pedal through a Fender...will it be different? More for hardrock with the GH50L?
The GH50L doesn't use speakers because it is a head. You will need a separate cab to go with it which has speakers in.

Thanks everybody for the advices.
I'm searching for a raw and heavy distorted tone and most of the time I'm playing with a distortion pedal (Boss DS1/Metal Zone) in front of the amp...so I don't use the gain/distortion directly from the amp itself (I like to eq the distortion by myself). I'm also always using reverb from the amp.
I like the raw and tight distorted hardrock sounds...(no metal!!).
The bass and mids must sound tight with some bite in it....
The clean sound must be very decent...I like Fender amps for the clean sound, but then I don't get a RAW and TIGHT distorted sound...
So my dream amp must have both worlds-> clean->very clean
distorted-> raw, heavy, tight
What is the right amp for me?!
Laney LH50R
or an ENGL.. Thunder i think has 2 channels, and is in the same price range
i'd do some clips, but my charvel is disasembeled and i doubt you'd like to hear DropB doing clean lol.. and i'm too lazy to re-set the jackson to E standard
