Title: JB jr : Alternative
Post by: twt on June 08, 2007, 01:34:59 AM
I have an american strat that I want to swap out the bridge pickup with a humbucking single. I am looking at the JB jr from Seymour Duncan and possibly the Lil Screaming Demon. What would be a good comparison from Bare Knuckle?

Thanks.

There will be no direct comparison, as BK does not make a single coil sized humbucking pickup.

Edit: And welcome!

Edit-edit: If you're looking for a great true single coil, P90/91 or full size humbucker you've come to the right place!

^ just to add to ben's post, if it's an american strat (at least one of the newer ones), odds are it's HSH-routed, so you could fit a full-sized humbucker in the bridge position, if that's what you're looking for tone-wise, if you're willing to buy a new scratchplate.

Just to add yet further options..

BKP produce an extremely overwound single coil bridge pickup called the Sinner.

It will easily get you into the same gain territory as a humbucker but retains the dynamics of a single coil.

It's hard to imagine a SC could be produced with the power but it is highly musical and really grinds if you want it to.

It just requires a little bit of a step out of your musical familiarity zone to order one but I love the ability to play Ozzy/Zakk riffs on what "looks" to be a standard Strat.

Good luck.

Good point, I forgot all about the Sinner!

Mmmm
Speaking of P90s - don't forget that the Mississippi Queen is a P90 in a humbucker shell and will fit in a strat that is routed to take a humbucker at the bridge (as most modern ones are)

And there are a few variations of how strong a P90 pickup you have in there.
A bit more practical than putting a regular P90 in a strat as that usually means routing and getting a tech involved, and the look isn't right for everyone- see below: guitar I made with a BKP90 and Apache/ Mothers Milk combo

I am leaning towards the Sinner it seems to have some good tones and will fit with what I have. Question regarding this, since it is a bridge pickup the stock option is what I would want correct? I thought RW/RP was for middle pickups only, is this correct?

^ yeah, i think so. if that's the only pickup you're putting in the guitar, though, you might want to check what polarity the other pickups you have are, in case you want middle + bridge together to be noiseless.

I think. I'm pretty much at the limit of what i know, lol
