Title: PRE AMPS
Post by: futuregun on June 09, 2007, 10:07:29 AM
ok im gonna sound like a tard but what exactly are preamps? i presume they mod the sound of the guitar signal before goin into th power/main/speaker amp?

im tryin to get my first real rig set up and am tryin to find out th best set up for the sound im lookin.
i like the mesa thud the peavey gain.dunno not too much distortion but real agressive tones and warm cleans.

would a preamp help me get this sound.
im headin towards a peavey head with a line6 cab as i hear theyre very good for th price but th heads arent.

cheers

well, in a typical amp head, the pre amplifies your signal to line level..then slams it into the power amp section-a mesa boogie head ,for example, has pre amp tubes that help create that rich saturation/sustaining sound-this signal created by the pre is sent into decibel heaven by hitting the power amp(power tubes..transformers,etc)..the signal now can kill animals...tube amps create different tones based on the tubes/transformers/etc-a boogie has the trademark preamp gain sound, while an older marshall is known for its power amp obliteration..

A traditional amplifier has a Pre Amp section where the signal is first inputted - It alters the sound and then sends that signal to the Power Amp section which then boosts the signal to send to the speakers.

A standard guitar amplifier has both sections put together - You can also buy each seperately for more customisation etc.

If you're going to get a preamp, get an ADA MP-1 (from eBay)... <voice of The Simpsons comic-book shop guy>Best preamp ever!</voice> :)
