Title: what's your favourite pedals and why?
Post by: JJretroTONEGOD on June 10, 2007, 02:18:33 AM
I'll start with my favourite pedals.

Teese RMC3 Custom wha, Keeley Fuzz Head, Keeley Java Boost, Boss DD3 MIJ blue label, line 6 liqua flange and the MJM Roctavios. These are the only pedals I've not sold out of my collection and I'll always keep them, none of them have ever stopped working or let me down. I should have never sold my Marshall supervibe pedal though!

What's your favourtie pedals and why do you like them?

Ben.

My favourite pedal is the Twilight Drive, made for me by HBE:

It's a clean boost/overdrive/buffer all in one pedal. I only use it for rehearsals, and I worked on the design of the pedal with Joel Weaver so that I would have a Swiss Army knife of pedals -- something that I would be able to use into any amp and get a decent high gain tone out of.

My second favourite pedal right now is the Thundertomate Phil Hilborne treble booster. Plugged into a Marshall you can get the most heavenly tones imaginable.

Fulltone OCD, it has a variable circuit, so if you pick hard, it increases the distortion, which it claims is unique(I kinda doubt it)

Still one of my better pedal though....

My maxon 808...I've tried tons of overdrive pedals, but they all sound so...forced! (Ironic eh) The 808 just sounds soooo warm

Xotic BB pre-amp not used anything else since as an overdrive. Works with any amp, super quiet, masses of gain and very warm.

At the moment my favourite two pedals are:

1. Xotic AC Booster (Ltd Edition Chrome) - works brilliantly in pretty much every situation, either as a clean boost, or to push a dirty amp into a great lead tone.

2. Peterson Strobostomp 2 - odd choice, but an amazingly accurate tuner, and I've just given my strat a setup using it, and am very pleased with the results.

I'm expecting delivery of an Analogman Bi-Chorus pedal any day now, and I expect that could make it's way into my top 3 quite quickly :)

Nothing particularly posh or exotic here:

Morley "Bad Horsie" wah - best designed & easiest to use wah ever :-)

MXR M134 Chorus - warmest, lushest, fullest chorus I've ever heard

Lehle 3@1 switcher - not exactly an effect, but a really useful pedal to have - less messing around when changing guitars, really good for A/B comparison tests too & doesn't colour the sound.

I have just built a big muff and phase 90 clone from these guys

i have to say they both turned out great - quite authentic to the originals but with true bypass switching and a power adapter socket

My favourites are the Klon Centaur overdrive, my old Jem Cry Baby, an original MXR Phase 100, my newest, which is the HBE Twilight Drive (only mine is white not black!), and my all time favourite, the Boss DF-2 Super Distortion & Feedbacker.

The Klon has the least impact on tone I ever heard in a pedal, but it still drives the amp as if you cranked it.  The old Cry Baby has a tone that seems to be missing from the newer pedals, it seems to have more lower mids.  The Phase 100 has the phase 90 sound with 3 other settings, none of which I ever use!!

TO already gave you the description of the Twilight Drive.

The DF-2 is basically a DS-1 with a feedback circuit.  You can set when the harmonic comes in on the feedback and the balance of feedback to distortion.  The name was changed (at DiMarzio's request), to Super Feedbacker & Distortion, but the pedal is the same.  You hold down the switch for the feedback feature.

Mind you with the Klon and Twilight drive, I can get feedback at pretty low volumes anyway!

I miss my old crybaby which I gave to my nephew with a warning to look after it at all costs. I like my DHA Purist pedal as I can set it in such a way that I get this great fat boosted tone that is great with a clean amp.Having said that, I don't have a lot of pedals  and so choosing a favourite is a bit irrelevant.

My Boss BF-2 which is an original 80's one with the black label. Really warm and sweet sounding.

Boss OD-1 which is also an original black label 80's one.

MXR Zakk OD smooth overdrive, nice pedal.

Usually I just run my GT8 though!!

+MI Audio Crunch Box - just rips and is cheap
+Fulltone SoulBender - great, full bodied fuzz
+ZVEX Octane3 - great octavia-wah, very grainy and extreme
+Little lehle - looks great, works great, sounds great (no sound impact)D+Diamond Drive - good I didn't sell it - it's a great overdrive
+Marshall Guv'nor (original series) - did someone boost a Soldano with this?

Twisted Transistor Treble Twister ( built by Heavier Than Hell here on the forum  :) ).  Used live into my Klipps for a LOUD 'DC tone.

Well, I'll only speak of my own pedals because they're the ones which I have experience with in a practical way:

1. Dunlop Crybaby From Hell: Amazingly versatile wah, built to last and sounds amazing.

2. Boss DD-2: Technically a digital delay but as close to analogue as you can get without the expense. The sound quality is brilliant, a lovely warm sounding delay and it doesn't need to be packed with unneccessary features like reverse and warp because it's a straight up delay pedal.

3. Line6 Echo Park: I'm not usually a fan of modelling gear but I tell you what, this shut me up seriously when I tried it. The tap tempo function is sublime and that's what I use it for mainly on-stage, so I don't have to mess around with my DD-2.

They're probably the main ones but I love each and every one of my pedals.

My favourite is the Barber 'Tone Press'. It is ( as you probably know ) a clean booster with blendable compression. It is usually advertised as the reverse, ( i.e. a compressor with blend control ) - but I like the way that it 'optimises' single coils . It is subtle and therefore is one of those pedals that best shows it's qualities when you switch it off and then realise what it had been doing for you as a "talent booster" - especially when playing fingerstyle.

You can completely 'dial out' the compression and just get a nice clean boost.

For 50's style/sound, I like my Dan-Electro "Tape Echo" after the Tone Press. The Danelectro is not boutique quality, but it does the job.

I am interested in your recommended overdrives - and will be reading  with interest, but there are three main reasons I'm more of a blendable compressor ( if anything ) guy:

1) I play mostly clean.

2) I like to leave out the effects if I can ( except reverb )

3) I have a Laney LH50R - II which gives me enough 'old school' gain on it's hot channel for my needs ...

F.F.

An HBE Dos Mos. I use it with my strat into a clean amp to just break it up slightly. It sounds great.

I've got a HBE Power Screamer too but i don't use it as i prefer the amps distortion/overdrive.

Did use a cry baby a lot but it's worn out after 15 odd years, so use a Ibanez weeping demon wah now.

I rationalised my board over the weekend to things I use:

Award Session JD10 MKII pre-amp - has true tone buffer to clean out the rest  of the pedals, set as a great clean boost - click a red switch and you have awesome distortion - my fave, even if it isn't cool.

HBE CPR compressor

Ibanez WD7 Weeping Demon Wah

HBE Powerscreamer - set as a Tubescreamer

HBE Big D - set as a distortion

Pro-Tone Lithium Chorus - I didn't use it for a while because it had a funny radio frequency sound - I later found that the battery snap had become loose as was causing the trouble.  Remove, this is a lush chorus with loads of mojo.

TR2 Tremolo - with the Harmony Central snipped capacitor mod (which works wonders)

Dano PBJ Delay - I only use slap back and this one sounds good to my ears

Digitech Digiverb - which does its job acceptably well.

I also just modded an Ibanez TS7 with an Monte Allums kit - I like it alot and i'm thinking of putting it place of the HBEs.  Trouble is - the HBEs are expensive and the TS7 is a cheap ebay project and my snobbery is winning at the moment.

DigiTech GNX3000 guitar workstation.
It has all my fave pedals in there including the whammy and tube screamer plus some sensational amp and cab models....a real tone monster only let down by some of the delays but I fixed that by going stereo out into a Line6 Echo Park
As MrEd says the Echo Park has some brilliant echo effects, though I still miss my old Watkins Copycat tape echo and ColorSound Fuzz/Wah/Swell...sold em years ago and regretted it ever since.

they are all in my pedalboards, didn't bother with overdrive/distortion pedals since it can vary depends on your amps + if you have a good amp, u don't need one  :D

Analogman chorus <-quality quality quality, best service, nice sounding chorus, although sometmes i miss cheap sounding of boss ce-2

HBE phylocybe <-so unique, best sounding phaser imho, great colour too

MSD Silvermachine Mk2 <-by far the best modern wah pedal i've used, puts bad horsie to shame

Axess BS2 Buffer <-beats dos mos in my opinion (through marshall tsl), it's really worth trying out

quite interested getting tc electronic nova delay when it finally comes out though. also foxelectronic TZF flanger sounds awesome!!

I'll certainly try to remember - I have a gig tonight so all my stuff is at home anyway, I'll try to get a peek at the settings. I have it set for a really, really broad and wide sweep to really accentuate the wah effect. And ALWAYS with the boost function on, that little baby is so good.

Hullo, first post here, just ordered me some Mother's Milks t'other day for my Strat and noticed the forums :).  Anyways, my favourite pedal is my first generation MI Audio Tube Zone all the way from sunny Australia (their prices have about doubled since I bought mine ;)).  Covers more boost/overdrive/distortion territory than any OD pedal I've ever used and really works well with my JCM 800 (one of the earlish all valve vertical input single channel jobs).  Keep meaning to upgrade to the newer model with more knobs, maybe one day....

I'de like to get some different pedals. I've always had to compromise because i don't want to spend to much money.

There is one single pedal that i bought and have not sold. And its nothing special at all.
Marshall vibrotrem. I set it to vibrato and turn the depth down so its barely noticable. It basically works great as a boost and brings out some lower mids. If anyone has this pedal you should try using it like this for a boost.

Other than that Ive had a few pedals and not really liked them.
This thread is good though, maybe i'll sell them and try some of what you guys have said here.

Maxon AD-999, great sounding analog pedal with a long delay time

Analogman Chorus, simple. Depth switch is a nice feature

EVH wah, great for distorted sounds, it growls.

Keeley TS808 mod plus for a nice overdrive

Analogman Boss DS-1 Pro for a think distortion.

Really want to get a BK Tube Driver next

Boss OD-1, just the right drive/boost for my marshall 2205. Ts808 is also nice but the OD-1 has more bite and brightness and stays more neutral when driving a dirty marhall head.

Boss CE-2, have it for over 20 yrs like the OD-1. Very simple chorus, but it has some kind of awww effect on women which i think is the whole point of using one anyway

Boss AD-3 Acoustic Processor, if you play amplified (semi)acoustic guitar you need something like this, everything that isnt quite like it should, you can fix it with this. You can also use it on electric guitar btw, its quite an unique soundshaping thingy.

Ive not yet found a distortion unit i really liked to use, at least pushing my amp into heavy distortion always sounded best to me. Exept offcourse for da bR00tAlz i have an old Marshall shred master pedal (which is more or less the preamp stage of the marshall valvestate series) and an MI crunchbox v1. Both are ok i suppose, but not nearly as good as real tube distortion. Also have the Blackstar HT-dist btw, but that has some issues with my marshall i cant work around, on a solid state amp its great though.

At the moment it's the Hardwire CM-2. I love it, it's like adding pumping fresh energy into your sound.

Here'some more pedals that I use with my other amp.

EDIT:

Yes I really need a proper pedalboard!!!

Of those 4 Overdrives I currently own I like the Hardwire most. It's the best OD I so far have owned (I also had a Visual Sound one, but don't own that pedal anymore).

I haven't been around that many pedals so I haven't got a big "base" to speak from so I better just name pedals I own.

Emma Electronics Reezafratzitz. A great distortion/overdrive pedal. Can go from Marshall to Vox tones. Very versatile. I mostly use it for more distorted tones.

T-Rex Alberta. Lovely tube screamer type of pedal. Cranked all the way up it gives a lovely AC/DC-ish tone in combination with a humbucker equiped guitar. It's just great for blues and lower gain rock. Cuts through well and is useable as a booster as well.

T-Rex Replica. A great sounding delay with tap tempo. Doesn't oscillate which I would be a nice feature in my eyes and it cuts the sound when you turn the tempo knob while playing. A bummer too. But it sounds lovely.

Boss PH-2. Maybe not the best sounding phaser, but I like its versatility. It can go quite slow and ultra fast.

I swear by an EQ in the loop and a gate infront of the amp, for obvious reasons. Currently using an MXR KK and ISP decimator in those roles.

Fulltone Clyde wah.  A great wah, need not say more.

MI Audio Boost 'n Buff. A clean boost/treble booster/buffer. Next in signal chain after my guitar. Usually the boost function is off, I just let it function as a buffer. Very low noise, can also be used in the FX loop because of the good headroom.

Mad Professor Little Green Wonder. An overdrive, with the same knob layout as a typical tube screamer, but a different character. Very organic sounding and dynamic! I mainly use it as a lead boost, but sometimes leave it on permanently and adjust my volume knob for different parts. Makes your tone bigger no matter how it's set up. I love it.

The gas pedal on my car. Used with moderation.

Wampler Super Plextortion this pedal gives great sounds. Sounds like an angry wall of Marshalls. I like it because it gives a really good warm tone, and it is a very big sound. Not thin and compressed

Alex what do you think about the boss looper? I'm very tempted by one but not sure about how easy it is to use.
