Title: How do you pronounce Alnico?
Post by: deg0ey on June 12, 2007, 10:49:18 PM
It's one of those words I've only ever seen written, and I sort of pronounce it in my head, but have no idea how it is supposed to be said...

Any suggestions?

Thanks

I say al-nick-oh.  After all, it's "ni" as in "nickel".

Don't suppose it really matters.

just point out what it stands for ALuminium - NIckel - CObalt, that should make the pronunciation fairly obvious

With regards to Ibanez - the company got its name from Salvador Ibáñez - who was a Spanish classical guitar maker - so it should be pronouced Iban-eth (but its not).

I don't see why, because it indeed isn't al-nee-koh ;) (though it is is closer than his pronnounciation) but then I am pedantic at times.

From several (onlune) dictionarys and reference works al·ni·co (ăl'nĭ-kō')

Here's another one: is Hamer pronounced "hammer" or "hay-mer"?

I've always said "hammer" but most people seem to say "hay-mer", and I read somewhere that that's the correct pronunciation.  But if that's the case, why did they have Hamer-lock tuners and the Hamer Slammer line?

 :?

It's Haymer because
1) thats what Paul Hamer says
2) Because of the magic E rule in teaching language which makes the A sound ay rather than ah (my mother is a special needs teacher teaching language)

And Feline is not pronounced Feleeny either!
Although i have had letters addressed to Sea Lion guitars - obviously some people dont hear it right over the phone

I was gonna say that, but couldn't remember if it was just E's or if it was any vowel...

OK, I'm convinced by your arguments (especially point 1).

So the whole Hamer Slammer/Hamer-lock concept is complete and utter nonsense.  A branding campaign that only works visually, not verbally!

Try the Haymer Slaymer line, it kicks righteous ass.  Er, dude.

Heres another one

Bush being pronounced as Arse (especiullay if it's preceeded by a W) ;)

DiMarzio seems to cayse a lot of people to add a T into it for some reason (something like Di Matzio for some reason)

Hmmm I will have to listen to my copy of "The Who reside in Leeds"

That would make sense if DiMarzio was Italian Im not sure if that's the case. Like Pizza I guess. But then it's not double Z. hmmmm.

I always thought Hamer was pronunced Haymer. I call Charvel as Charvel and not Sharvel.

true, however i assume hamer is of germanic origin, which would be pronounced "hammer". Though obviously it's been anglicised by now. Like Van Halen, I'd assume in dutch it's pronounced "hallen"...

As for other ones, I think americans pronounce "Les Paul" as "Less Paul", as it's short for "Lester". I still can't get my head round that, and just outright refuse.

Lol at bush, Blair is pronounced the same way, strangely.

I whack a t in dimarzio (dimartsio) too. I assume it's italian... noodle has a good point about the double z, though, i might have to look into that. i know that in german one z is "ts"...

I haven't a clue - It was my dad's old password for something to do with his work, I just saw it written somewhere, thought it looked cool and stole it...

Although, someone once told me that there was a Football (Soccer - damn americans) player with the same name (obviously an 'o' instead of a zero), so maybe my dad liked him?

Who knows - I sure as hell don't care

This is an amusing thread-much like those that we had going a while back. I never realised about Ibanez origins-I suppose the "b" would have the soft b pronounciation (almost a v)of Spanish. As for Hamer-I have always said "Haymer".Alnico has, to me, always been Al nee coe.I knew a guy who insisted on saying diggy(as in dig a hole) tech instead of digitech. Personally I have always pronounced Blair as w*nker.

If DiMarzio is Italian, I think there is a 't' pronounced in the Z.

Van Halen in Dutch is pronounced Van (a pronounced as in farm) Hahlen.

De Goey is pronounced with a hard G, just like Borat's chram.

yep - quite correct
Pronounced Epi-fone or Eppi-fone

the Epi comes from part of the name of the founder and phone from the greek for sound

Potted early history:

1863 Anastasios Stathopoulos is born in Sparta, Greece. His father Nicolas Stathopoulos is a lumber merchant.

1873 Anastasios builds his first instruments (according to Epiphone literature of the 1930s).

1877 The Stathopoulos family moves to Smyrna in Asiatic Turkey.

1893 Epimanondas (Epi), named after a military hero in ancient Greek history, is born to Anastasios and his wife Marianthe. By this time Anastasios has established a large instrument factory in Smyrna making violins, mandolins, lutes and traditional Greek lioutos.

1903 Persecuted by the Turks, Anastasios moves his family, which now includes sons Alex and Orpheus (Orphie) and daughter Alkminie (Minnie), to New York City. In the immigration process, the final s is dropped from the family name. Labels on Anastasios' instruments say A. Stathopoulo. Another son, Frixo, and a daughter, Elly, are born in New York.

1915 Anastasios dies, leaving Epi in charge. Although the Epiphone brand name is still a few years in the future, the modern Epiphone company begins in 1915 when Epi takes over the family business. Brother Orphie is second in command. Frixo and Minnie will also eventually become active in the company.

1917 Epi begins labeling instruments with the House of Stathopoulo brand. The era of the tenor banjo is beginning, and Epi is granted his first patent for banjo construction.

1923 Epi combines his name with phone, the Greek word for sound and begins using Epiphone as a brand name on banjos. He registers the Epiphone brand name in 1924.

Usually, the Japanese spell it in Japanese characters the way they hear it the original way so it's often a quite reliable way of finding out what's right.

According to a quick browse on google jap, it's haymer, sharvel, di-ma-zio, I-ba-neez and Pi-eh-zo.

It's described here in more detail how it ended up being called the way it is:

http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%82%A2%E3%82%A4%E3%83%90%E3%83%8B%E3%83%BC%E3%82%BA

to summarise:

1. The name originates from a Spanish name, therefore the correct pronunciation would be ih-ba-ni-ess.
2. in the main market for Ibanez (i.e. in English speaking countries) they were commonly reffered to as I-ba-needs or I-ba-nize
3. The Japanese read it in Roma-ji, and called it ih-ba-needs (dunno how, coz that'd be reading it wrong)
4. The Japanese thought it'd be cool to say it the same way as the foreigners so decided on I-ba-needs (or "ai ba ni - zu" in katakana). The pronunciation became official in Japan in the late 1980's

It's funny how they copied the English speakers even though they were wrong.
