I've just been reading about vintage PAF pickups and wondered if the vintage style BKPs (Mule/Stormy Monday/Riff Raff) come with long or short magnets?
I would guess:
* Mules have long magnets ('59 spec Alnico IV PAFs)
* Riff Raffs have short magnets ('65 Alnico V Patent Number pickups)
What about Stormy Mondays? Where do they fit in?
-
my understanding of the SMs is they are a mellower PAF still with the long bar magnet - but more of that sweeter Peter Green type tone than some of the hotter PAFs that Duane Allman had (Hot Lanta etc...)

We use vintage cut 63.5mm long Alnicos in Stormy Monday and The Mule to be true to 57-59 era PAFs and then 60.3mm in the Riff Raff to be authentic to the Patent No. humbuckers of '60 onwards.

Cheers Tim!

humbuckers in the style of the PAFs found in Peter Green's famous 59 LP.

so a PAF thats out of phase?
-
Yep - a slight tweak on the Stormy Mondays I believe, designed to be set up out of phase as on the ex Peter Green/Gary Moore '59 Les Paul.
-
they use a birght type of alnico II and the neck p/u is wound in a very unique way, just like Peter's ex.
-
They're based on info I received from Charlie Chandler who worked on Gary Moores PG LP and actually had the covers off the humbuckers.I also got info from the guy who rewound the damaged neck pickup, Sam Lee,so the neck is wound in reverse like the original and with heavy formvar wire(not magnetically out of phase as often suggested).
Magnets-vintage cut 63.5mm rough cast Alnico II.
Gary Moore has been using the PG Blues in one of his LPs on his most recent tour.

I saw one of the shows on that tour and (anorak on) recognised the pickups! that guitar did indeed sound fabulous! it's a replica of the Peter Green guitar. although to be fair he sounded pretty good on all his guitars
