ok so I spent some time this afternoon recording a soundclip of my rig playing some Ozzy so I might as well post it here - surprising how versatile Mules are.
* 1991 LP std loaded with double creme Mules
* MI Audio Crunchbox
* '76 Marshall Superbass with master volume mod.
* Marshall 4x12 with 55Hz cone G12H-30s
* SM57 into my old Tascam cassette 4-track
* Ozzy track from my old vinyl
I've mixed my guitar hard left so you can hear the Mules loud and proud. The playing isn't great, some of the timing is off and I didn't learn the riffs properly - pretty much winging it but you'll get the idea, enjoy!

Man this sounds sick!
I love the tone, how loud was it? How much of the overdrive you reckon came from the amp?
I'd love to play with your rig
-
I really liked your tone, I bet you could get a good Dokken sound too

I had the amp's gain on 8 which puts you in Free territory - the Crunchbox is doing the rest.
The amp wasn't that loud at all - room volume, between 1 and 2 on the master.
Mic placement is the key imo.

Nice one matey - sounds a bit like my Crunch Box does though my Klipps. A great pedal, nice playing and top tone!
Must be the day for recording Ozzy clips ;)
-
This sounds really good, similar to the tone I was getting when I used the Crunch Box with my Laney/G12H setup!
I'd love to hear the Superbass by itself doing the Free type stuff, the only other superbass I've heard is this big thick fuzzy tone on www.myspace.com/blacktoedown

Q:P
excellent tone
i loved it
send me some pics please
i would like to see the pedal too
crunchbox
EXCELLENT

Sounds quality, very good Ozzy tone! You would be better than Zakk Wylde ahaha.
-
HTH,
Do youfind that the Crunch Box muds up when you roll the volume down on the guitar? That's the only think I don't like about the pedal...

do you mean the volume of MY guitar parts is too low? - just set the balance control on windows volume console towards my guitar part rather than the backing track which is mixed in the opposite speaker.
thanks for the comments too - hails!!!

Joe, lmao, if only that were true - Zakk is a monster player, I'd have to practice for the next twenty years solid to get upto his standard (yikes!)
Twinfan, I've not really played with the pedal enough to notice it getting muddy with the guitar's volume roled down. Maybe a bright cap on your guitar would help with that.

It's not the guitar matey, it's the pedal. Straight into the amp my guitars are fine (50s style wiring retaining highs), and also via my Box of Rock they're fine too. I think it's a feature of the Crunch Box. Not a problem if you're an "all on full" kinda guy and use pedals for boosts/solos. I use the volume a lot though...

to hear how much amp gain I've got going on checkout my new clips of the Mules playing AC/DC, Free and Bluesbreakers stuff - I just added the Crunchbox over that same setting.
there's no way it will do death/thrash but we've both got 5150s to cover that ground
I've got some 12s on my Explorer tuned to C so some Nailbomb/5150 clips might be up in the next few days.
-
AHAHAHAHAH HOLY shite.. AWESOME
iīll be waiting.
itīs kinda .. i own you the nailbomb clips , i didnīt have time or equipment to do it.. none of my friends has it thats the reason iīm delaying
iīll try to get a pc microfone.. one of those cheap ones.. and try to record it under brutal volumes. ahahahah at least 1 or 2 output on 5150
Q:)
Hails
JP
THANKīS in advance.

I think some Electric Wizard might be in order - not exactly death/thrash but it's still 'heavy as hell' (groan - it had to happen one day)

Oh! Oh! If you're in C, would you like to do a Cathedral or Grand Magus clip? :o
I've always wanted a 5150 and wonder how some stoner/doom sounds with it
Electric Wizard is fine too tho :P

I think it does stoner/doom fine if you EQ it right. For that kind of thing I'd just use a Big Muff into the 'clean' channel though to be honest.

Just giving this a BUMP since there are alot of people asking about a distortion stompbox and this clip just sounds AWSOME!

yeah, not bad at all - wonder what that guy used

Mic placement is the key imo.
Fancy elaborating on that (where you put the mic) or is it a secret?
-
Like the clip, it just sounds a bit weird through headphones, the tone is really good.

I could tell you, but I'd have to kill you
It's no big secret really - put the headphones on and move the mid across the speaker cone so you get an idea of the tone at various points of the speaker. Then try changing the angle that the mic faces the speaker cone.
What works for me is positioning the mic 45degress to the cone between the edge and middle of the speaker.
I also use two mics to get a bigger tone. The SM57 doesn't have much bass, but it has lots of midrange to help your tone 'cut'. I then mix in a cheap Shure Prologue SM58 that has a hollow midrange and lots of bass - fills in the gaps in the SM57's tone spectrum.
I also like the mics touching the grillcloth if you've got the amp fairly quiet to make use of the proximity effect. If the amp is louder you've naturally got more bass so you can back the mic off upto a foot so it 'sees' more of the speaker and captures a broader frequency range.

Never do triple tracking, I seem to remember that one getting double tracked and mixing it in just enough to make it even fatter.

sorry i'm pretty late to this - but this tone is ULTIMATE!
-
Nice tones there!
would you mind sharing the settings you are using for the crunchbox?
Thanks!
-
Your a bit late with your responce
Anyway i have the crunchbox too and it has enough gain to drive the mules to this kind of tone. Im guesstimating the drive is at 2 o'clock on this clip.
Marvelous clip i have to agree......

cool got to love 4 tracks...like the amp..any chance of a clean clip as well
