Title: AC/DC's tone
Post by: Woogie on June 19, 2007, 08:32:00 PM
Just been watching Family Jewels and Live at Donnington.

They have awesomeeeeeeee tones. I love the really early glassy tone of songs like "Baby please don't go" through to the thick tones of "Inject the venom" and "Back in black".

Some great tones especially for no pedals!!

AC/DC's tone is all about no pedals - just plug straight it and crank the amp.  Some of my fave guitar tones of all time - checkout Mal's tone at the start of Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap (omg!!)

Agreed - awesome!  Shame our "Malcolm" insists on using his Gretch MY Signature  :)  through a DSL 50  :(

Angus tone on "The Jack" from the If You Want Blood live album (actually, the whole album...) is what I try and get from my gear for YC/DC.  His playing on that album is superb too.  'DC at their peak.

Listening to Back in Black now, the tone on what do you do for money honey is so good, I wish my amp did that roar :(

it's funny you should mention that specific song and recording - it's one of my all time fave Angus moments too.  his phrasing and attack on that song are just incredible.

HTH - It's a absolute classic isn't it?  Fantatsic playing.

Tom - We're doing "What Do You Do For Money Honey" tomorrow night at rehearsal as it will probably be in the set for our next gig.  I love that track and tone.  On your GH50L you'll need to keep the gain down (don't use the extra stage either), boost the master and keep the bass low (your G12Hs will fill the sound out).  You've got to crank it

As good as AC/DC are, I find them to be so one-track and repetitive.

Horses for courses I guess!

I must admit, I appreciate them much more after playing in a 'DC band.  You realise all the subtleties and clever arrangements in their tunes when you try and work them out.

Very good !

Mr Ed = Talking horse in an old USA 60s sitcom

An old Plexi turned up loud does the best AC/DC sound
The Dennis Cornell Plexi 45/50 is one of the best I've heard

But a Marshall 2203/2204 will do a good sound- dont use too much preamp gain though.

Phew thanks Jonathan..... I thought I was the only one on this forum old enough to remember that series

I like many AC/DC numbers. Apart from a great tone, Angus has a knack of dropping an odd note, bend or phrase into a solo which completely lifts it.

I think Malcolm's best tone is in Night Prowler. That is THE sound of a Gretsch Jet through a Marshall in rock setting.

If I played in a (profitable) AC/DC cover band, I'd try to get my hands on a Roccaforte.

One of the biggest 'DC bands in the UK (Dirty 'DC) use modded JCM800s.  I presume they're backwards modded to sound more like a Plexi.  I don't know why they didn't get JMP Master Volumes...

found some good jcm800 acdc settings today whilst playing around - this combo has terrible speakers in it though, so i'm having to use slightly higher preamp volume than i'd like to thicken it up.

Checkit:

Preamp:8
Master:10
Treb:10
Mid:10
Bass:5
Pres:5

(btw these settings are out of 10 - not clockface based.)

According to this link they use Wizard amps as well. (look under Artists)

http://www.wizardamplification.com/index.htm

Thank ***k for that  8) .  I started this thread after listening to a clip of the Wizard Modern Classic..... http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8520 ....and apart from Beatle, nobody else seemed to like it - gave me a real complex  . Still if it's good enough for Angus and Malcolm......

Powerage is still my favorite AC/DC album. After that, Back In Black.

But I still think the song Night Prowler is Mal's best moment.

Ahhh, the DC tone ... for me its the bit in the middle of Down Payment Blues where it cuts to just Mal on rhythmn hammering that B/E riff out. Low gain but soooooooooooo heavy.

For Angus, live at the MK bowl in '91 ... brought a tear to the eye it sounded that good. His tone is basically superb on all DC records, its hard to pick one out as a prime example!

Who needs fancy FX eh?

BTW, Dirty DC are playing in St. Albans at 'The Horn' this Saturday (23rd) if anyone is near enough to make it.  Seen them there 4 or 5 times, and they are f*****g ace. Something about low ceilings, a floor coverd in smashed glass, beer and fag butts that really brings out the best in DC's music :) That and the fact that its a small venue and the PA is F'ing loud. Seriously ear destroyingly loud.

Thought I might as well record my attempt at getting an acdc style crunch out my my Laney earlier, still cant get that close, it doesnt have that raw sound. I think it needs slightly more gain (had the master on about 2 and pregain on 5) and a bit less bass. Perhaps pushing it with a treble booster would help, or would that just make it too harsh?

I reckon it's your speakers Tom.  You won't get the right "bite" out of G12Hs.  Chewy bass and mids yes, but top end bite no.  'DC tone is all about clarity and a decent amount of smooth treble.

Powerage is definately my favourite AC/DC album but their best tone is on the If you want blood live album IMO, I would kill for a tone as good as that.

According to wikipedia:

"Speaker cabinets he has used have been Marshall 4x12"s (model 1982 and 1960, mostly B models) with Celestion G12H 30 watt (on old recordings), Vintage 30s (on newer recordings) and G12M 25 watt speakers (on solos/overdubs on newer recordings). Malcolm has used Mesa Boogie Cabs before as seen on AC/DC's 1992 live album, Live."

I like both the new and older tones.. hmm maybe I should get a V30 to go with my G12H after all..

I think the secret to their sound is a certain kind of amp and a lot of volume.

You need an amp with a very open sound, that doesn't have lots of preamp gain or sustain and is pushing back quite a lot, making it hard to play almost at low volume. Now if you crank this Plexi or whatever, the saturated power amp will smoothen things out and sustain and screaming tones will come to live.

I think you have to set a gain level that feels not quite enough at low volume and then crank the beast up, pushing the power tubes and the speakers, then go for a hard pick and wide vibrato and you'll be there.

I always thought that 'DC used G12H-30s in the old days - always sounds closer to their tone than G12Ms when I've used 'em both.

Sorry Tom/HTH - slight misunderstanding.  I meant Tom won't get quite the right tone with his GH50L and G12H combination.  A Plexi, when cranked, has loads of upper mids and the treble really shines through too.  The GH50L never really does this, even when cranked.  It stays pretty thick, so you can't really get that 'DC tone.

Now HTH's rig on the other hand...

ahh, now I get you - gonna need a brighter speaker to pair with the GH50L then.  Maybe V30s? I think G12T-75s have to much of a scooped tone to do 'DC properly.

Yep - the V30 works well with the GH50L (in my experience).  HTH is right - the G12T-75 will be too scooped.

Modified by a friend of mine: Jesse Hoff
i'll have to ask him what the mod is when i catch up with him

i think it is rather similar to what they do on the Modern Vintage to be fair - two gain controls for different bits of the sound- controls first and second stage gain balance

Here's what works for me:

Angus' tone:
bass: 1 o' clock
mid: 2 o' clock
treble: 3 o' clock

Malcolm's tone:
bass 12 o' clock
mid: 3 o' clock
treble: 12 o' clock

Wether this works right depends a bit on your amp n' stuff.  Angus has a progressive EQ setting while Malcolm's EQ is all about mid boost.

I must say I'm heartened to see a non metal thread get so much attention. I have stayed out of commenting on settings and so on as I'm a bit of a blasphemer here.

I use an OD pedal and then a Graphic equalizer pedal to get near the malcom tone. As for angus.... well I just dont play well enough. I have tried many times to recreate "shook me" solo tones and fall short.

Its more about his fingers than amps/guitars etc. In this solo in particular you can here a few pinched harmonics (squawk's) and so on that I just cant get right. I get colse but never right.

Anyways full props to you guys :D  :D  :D

Not wishing to brag (too much!), but I think I do a cracking "Shook Me" solo.  My favourite solo of our gigs   :D

Playing High Voltage is massively uplifting too - something about the groove we get with that track.
