My new/old (however you want to look at it) Greco 1978 Les Paul Standard MIJ in tobacco burst.
It is the best guitar i have played and the best looking guitar, neck is perfect for me and it's really comfortable, sounds great even with stock pickups.
Came to a grand total of £350 + £20 next day postage including gig bag.
Pics ahoy!

that looks like a tasty les paul crazy_joe!
i'd be tempted to upgrade the pickups, but if its sounds ok you're probably wise to enjoy it as it is for a little while at least.
-
cheers :D, yeah in the future perhaps a set of mules or something but i'm pretty happy with the ones in there now which is good because it saves me a lot of money
-
That looks great! Very Slash. Nice find.
-
I love that guitar the tobacco sunburst looks great. If I ever get a les paul I'm definately gonna get it in that colour.
-
Love tobacco sunburst, i also love a violin finish on a les paul.

wen _tom_ sees this thread he's gonna cream!#
That's a bloody fine Greco; glad you've joined the legions of people who have found out that Greco own Gibson

Haha yeah, this les paul is awesome so i don't see how much better you can improve it by. They certainly can't be worth all the £1000's more.
-
Joe thats REALLY nice find man. It looks v. clean. Stick some 11's on!
-
Yep, looks like a nice one that. Bargain! :D
-
Take the scratchplate offffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Cheers everyone :D Always wanted a les paul since my epiphone starter one haha, so comfotable to play standing up.
-
That looks a great bargain Joe, happy playing.
-
How does it sound with the "chambering"??
-
It sounds awesome, though i don't have another les paul that isn't chambered to compare it to so i wouldn't know what it sounds like unchambered haha. My Epiphone was an alder bodied les paul not mahogany :(
-
Take the scratchplate offffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Never! I don't like holes in my guitar. :P

You can put the screws in the holes and voila!!
-
Haha it's like i said to _tom_, if it had a screw in it i would notice it even more haha. I like it with the scratchplate on anyways, matches the creme surrounds.
-
:D It`s at this point that those of us that keep telling you lot that the MIJ pre lawsuit LP copys are better than the originals all start to look smug !!! Glad your enjoying it.
:D 8)
PS you might want to put your Holy Divers in it to see what it`ll sound like.
-
Haha I was very tempted today JT :p, might try them tomorrow if i get a chance.
-
awesome!
:drink:
-
Nice guitar! But the headstock doesn't say "Gibson". :?
Ups, don't shoot me please... just joking! Enjoy the guitar!

I am wondering what is the difference in btw chambered and non-chambered. Have not compared one side by side. It is being said that chambered body resonate better. So how is the the tone different from a solid body.
-
Not as dark - Not as much wood.
I allways thought the main point in chambering was to make it lighter...
And to have stashes to hide contraband....

Really depends on the chambering.
The most basic way to chamber a guitar is to make lots of randomly placed, small holes or channels before glueing on the top. This will provide some weight reduction and have a minimal impact on the sound.
or you have the 'tone chambers' kind of thing which will probably be 3 or 4 strategically placed holes that will provide a lot of weight reduction and have more of an impact on the sound - generally it makes it more 'open'. . . god i hate decribing sound!
After that you are into the 335 semi territory
i would not say chambered guitars resonate better - just differently, but they are definately a bit louder when played acoustically and that is where you will see the most difference in tone. As soon as you plug it in, all other things being equal, the difference is less noticeable. . . but still there.
Its really a preference thing rather than one way being better than the other
-
Wez - that would be properly chambered as opposed to having a pressed plywood top with air gaps under where it had been pressed into an arch.....
That is what a lot of the cheap end LP copies were like in the 1970s
Mind you I had a couple of those that were ace guitars and the sound was unique too.
-
indeed - i have worked on a few like that and i dont care if they somehow manage to sound alright . . . its just plain wrong!! Ya might as well start playing a bloody banjo
Mind you i have the same response to the SG neck join and i know they can be nice guitars - infact i used to love them before i started building guitars.
-
IMO, the neck joints on the gibson guitars are just plain wrong, if you ask me.
it has such a HUGE room for improvement, yet gibson doesnt do shite about it. would it be so hard to contour the heels of the Vs, SGs, and LPs? while the heels on the V and SG arent as bad, cos the shape/construction allows for unrestricted upper fret access, the LPs are horrendous

If they change anything the customers dont like it. there are loads of easy and sensible improvements that could be made to these classic designs but they aint gonna bother if it hurts sales

maybe they could release a "Les Paul Modern" series where they actually changed their dated and impractical designs a bit; I'd be tempted.

not to mention a modern day V ... but since i only need give my money to jonathan for a modern day V, i wont even bother with gibson hehehe
-
thats the thing aint it.
Lots of companies make modern versions and if they dont you can always commision something.
Gibson will keep on doing what they do the way they do it - even if it endangers the longevity and quality of their instruments.
-
The thing is, people want a Les Paul for what it is - warts and all. A "Les Paul Modern" isn't what Jimmy Page/Slash/Paul Kossoff etc used so a lot of punters won't buy it. They want what their idol had. I'm not saying there isn't a market for it, but it'd be a small one compared to the "Les Paul Vintage".
And don't go giving Gibson ideas about bodging the mighty SG!

I just sent them an e-mail about your idea!! I kid, I kid!!!
Even before I started playing guitar I was attracted to Les Pauls but I didn't realize that all my favorite players play LPs until I made my myspace page. I put pics of my influences and someone pointed out that almost all of them play LPs.
-
I love how this LP looks Joe (even better without the pickguard tho ;))! I think I might sell my strat and get another les paul, had a gig earlier and started with the strat - nothing sounded right until I switched back to the LP, which is also much nicer to play.. :P
-
NICE!!
