Title: MIssissippi Queen Questions
Post by: Tol on July 04, 2007, 06:31:36 AM
How would a MQ sit in an all mahogany guitar?   I'm feeling like a change since a got a single coil guitar.  I have had a Nailbomb in the bridge and it seems too bassy since the new guitar.

I have read on here that all mahogany typically need low or really high output.  Would a MQ be a low output pickup?   Basically looking for an all rounder.

What's the guitar you're hoping to fit it in?

I have one in an all cedar (tonally similar to mahogany) SG and it's a great tone.  It's on the heavier side of the P-90 scale as the MQ has an Alnico V magnet and a medium-hot wind.  It does great early Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy and Green Day type tones.  I find it a bit hot for The Who and Pink Floyd type stuff but I have vintage P-90s in another guitar which cover those bases.

The MQ is a great all rounder, but a rockier all rounder rather than a bluesy all rounder if that makes sense?  Mine has a coil tap to drop the output a little to sound a little more vintage - a great option if you want a bit more versatility.

Its a mix between a LP and SG.   Its all mahogany, and about as thick as a SG, yet a single cutaway.

Definitely looking for more rock than blues.   I really like the characteristics of single coils, so I was thinking a MQ would give me that with added power.

Would you say it has that?

Yeah its a good song!  I'm just worried about the all mahogany.  Don't want it to get muffled/wooly

No chance - you'll be fine.  The MQ has extra bite due to the Alnico V magnet and hotter winding.  I was playing my regular P-90s last night with lots of gain and they sounded superb - no woolliness, just fatness.

BKPs are great for not getting woolly.
