Title: Ibanez Customising on a small scale
Post by: apmaman on July 04, 2007, 06:47:44 PM
Well, I got my self an Ibanez RG550MXX in DY... I want it to Scream 80's! I was thinking about changing the volume/tone switch tips to fluorescent colours. However i cant seem to find anything on e-bay or any other shops.

What im asking you knowledgeable bunch is where can I get really bright coloured parts.

P.s any colour combinations are more than welcome as I've not decided yet :D

it's a tough one. It's a Ibanez rg550! how much more 80s can you get?! With birghtly coloured knobs etc, I think thats about as 80s as it's possible to get.

Now we've got to plan you out an outfit to go with it  8)

You'll struggle to get NOS knobs.  Don't know who makes them now, and they won't get as good a colour match either...

what colour are the knobs atm?? me n my mate took his strat ones off and sprayed them with yellow glow in the dark paint, which is about as bright as we could find, and they look great now, but they were white to start with

Ibanez have coloured knobs on their website under the accessories/spare parts pages, you would need to order these and my personal experience is that British shops don't like doing it as they might need to order in bulk, perhaps Headstock distribution can help.
Alternatively you can see if you can get some DiMarzio knobs, they also come in crazy colours but again you'll have to order and I'm not sure if they are inch or metric sized, the Ibanez pots will be metric.

Turns out that Fender stuff does fit on my Ibanez. I tried using my friends Mexi' strat and the knobs fit on fine. However, the switch tip is extremely loose and wont stay on. I could simply get the colour I want and glue it but I don't want to do that.

I found that Universal Jem site.

They've got alot of stuff on it but weary of ordering because I want to make sure that the switch tips will fit. Emailed the people but no reply as of yet. If they dont fit I can always try Max Cotton, he should be able to get them from somewhere. Good place to go for ibanez stuff, used his services before.

^ ^ Currently black, Thats not a bad idea actually if I cant find any.

I know, I feel like a used rag just thinking about it but unless Tim can get me coloured pickups, Im going Dimarzio. Plus, I can get Dimarzio Evo's for £35 each making BKP's look veeery expensive compared to them. Hell, thats my guitar completely upgraded for less than one BKP.

Also its that kinda sound Im after with this guitar. Shred Shred Shred 80's Hair metal and Power Ballad.

No worries man. I've hopefully got  550DY on the way and the urge to kit it out in JEM777DY colours is very strong indeed. If you can get coloured pups for 35quid go for it, try them out and sometime down the road if you think they are still missing something you can always get a rewind *Aaaiiieeeee*
