Yesterday my search for a new amp ended with the arrival of the UPS man :D
He delivered an Engl Savage 120 head.
For a long time I was convinced that the Hughes & Kettner Triamp MKII was the one for me (demo'd it at LGs & came back to Feline's stand drooling ), but it's a little bit more than I wanted to pay & gradually I started to think more about Engl. What finally made my mind up was a work colleague in Munich assuring me that the Engls have "fantastisch!" high gain sounds :) The twin FX loops swayed me to the Savage over the Powerball. Perhaps it was a gamble without actually demo-ing one for myself, but so far it's been worth it.
Will post more about its sounds once I've had a chance to really let fly at high volume & explore all the features but for the last day or so I've been wearing an ear-to-ear grin  Suffice to say the Savage is very well named :)
Here's a reasonably close pic:

I have the TC-Electronic G-Major in FX loop 1 for the clean & crunch channels only, then the BBE in FX loop 2 for the lead channels. The Korg tuner got shunted out by the BBE until I get round to buying a 4U rack case :)
Here it is with my cab, pedals & a couple of guitars:

(guitars are my Holy Diver-equipped RR1T & trusty old Flying V with Miracle Man bridge)
Happy Antag :)

Very Nice amp!! I've got a BBE too now, there great arn't they!
-
Man that's a rig and half! Congratulations man, that amp looks like the dog's bollocks.
I'm amp hunting at the moment - might I enquire where you got the Savage from, and roughly how much it set you back?
Cheers. :)
-
awesome!
judging by my savage se, it should be badass- i hear the savage se is a little "sweeter" sounding, while the savage is a bit more in your face.
nice score!

I love the look (and sound) of the Savage, just looks killer!
Congrats :)
-

KT88 goodness!!!
That amp should make you quite happy. :D

You bought an amp of this price range without trying it?
You are officially declared INSANE
Happy to see it was a good bet!!! I think there's a significant difference it sound depth and quality between those smaller screamers and thunders and the bigger Engls.
Enjoy your new rig!!

I don't think theres any going back once you play one. . not for me anyway :D

:) It's wasn't that much of a gamble.
My German colleague has very similar tastes in music to me - last time he was over here we drank beer, played guitars & talked for hours about gear & tone. He's owned a Powerball & Savage (along with pretty much everything else Engl ever made ) & we talked at length about the differences between the two (I have demoed a Powerball before)
So between my own Engl experience & the opinions of someone whose judgement I trust (plus reading the manual, reviews elsewhere etc) I had a fair idea of what I was getting.
If it had turned out a disaster, I could have returned it. I won't be doing that... :)

In simple terms, it makes the bass & treble freqs hit the speaker at the same time (there's normally a tiny amount of "lag"). The effect is startling on high gain sounds - as Feline said to me recently "it's like lifting a blanket off your amp" (it was listening to it with Feline's JCM800 that made me get one). Tightens up the sound considerably & makes it really clear.
I don't find it has such a noticeable effect on clean & low gain sounds. In fact I like that loose, spongy, diffuse feel to my clean tone so I really like that I can just have the BBE affecting the lead channel & leave the clean sound alone.

i bought my savage se without trying it, lol. I spent about a year trying everything i could, and then went and bought something i hadn't tried, as i got a deal i couldn't resist. I had tried most of the other engls though, so knew i'd be reasonably certain to like it.
I agree with your last sentence about the engls. Don't get me wrong, i like the screamer etc., but a lot of people seem to badmouth the engls based on their more budget amps. I haven't tried anything with as good tone as my savage se, which has half as many features.
