Title: Pedal Mods
Post by: badgermark on July 05, 2007, 09:15:19 PM
Yo peeps.

The act of modifying effects pedals interests me a great deal, from a aural and electronic perspective, so here be this thread.

Anyone modded/had modded a pedal? Everyone knows about the DS-1 mods out there, anything more exotic available for the bog standard pedals out there?

Also anyone know any quick mods to make my Boss DS-2 into the tonal MONSTER that I wish it could be?

I've modded the DS1 with the Monte Allums tri-gain switching mod (i.e. diode, LED and LED/Diode options) - Even without the tri gain it turned it from the nasty bright pedal that it is into a tone monster - I really recommend it.

Equipment is not all that expensive - you need a good pencil (best not to have flat) tipped soldering iron, a reel of desoldering braid, a fine wire snipper, some tape or heat shrink insulation and some fine flat headed pliers.  If you want to install a switch you need a drill and a some metal drill heads in the 4-6mm range.

Study these pages http://www.epemag.wimborne.co.uk/solderfaq.htm - if necessary practice on a junk old transistor radio that inevitably will be lying around (its probably best not to use anything with big capacitors to practice with) and you are away - its easy, and fun.

hi

Ive modded and build loads of pedals; its pretty easy really - most overdrive circuits for example are based on the original Tube screamer design with just a few tweaks to certain capacitors etc.

All you'd need to do for the ds-1 is change a few resistors/capacitors  etc - no layout changes.

Best places to start are:

www.generalguitargadgets.com
www.indyguitarist.com
www.buildyourownclone.com
www.tonepad.com

I believe indyguitarist sells ebooks pretty cheap which can show you this sort of stuff.

Groovy, I have some soldering experience and an electricians tool kit round here somewhere, time to get bodging.

Anyone done their own? Or did you trust professionals?
