My sprayer has told me many times he is colourblind - i didnt quite realise how bad
This was supposed to be trans black!!!
Ah well - i suppose it can be the 'Wez Venables Violet'
-
I like it :)
-
I know many girls who would go weak at the knee's for that guitar.
-
Haha
You'll just have to find a colourblind metalhead who you can convince that this guitar is trans black.
-
haha a colour blind sprayer
who cares about the colour, that neck looks killer!

Brazillian rosewood looks sweet!!
Black is a shade anyway so you can't be COLOURblind and mistake it surely?
Nice guitar though, I love hot rodded telecasters (especially Billy Gibbon's black one!!).
-
Forget about the colour - Look at that massive chip he made in the neck!!!
I seriously hope that he believes in the break it buy it policy! :o
-
sweet color!
-
Your all missing what appears to be a huge mirror ball in the corner. That and a pink guitar.
I'm starting to question your choice in Painter.
-
cheeky buggers arnt ya - i dont really feel the need to put as much effort into the stick of wood i hang the guitar by for spraying as i do my actual guitars!!! :P
i wouldnt think you could mistake black but apparently he was having an argument with his wife after she went upto see what he was doing and said "oh, that purple looks really nice" - he was thoroughly convinced it was black!
I quite like the purple but this isnt for me so it will be stripped back and redone in black. This is for a guy who brought a LP jnr i made last year. he had got hold of a tokai breezysound neck from the 70's that had never been fitted to a guitar - so he asked me to make a body for it, the pocket was not standard fender size.
There is definately a mirror ball in the corner but no pink guitar - who is colourblind now. The guitar in the background is one of my older personal guitars that i am having re-sprayed to bring up to the current standard so it can be sold.
see - not pink!!
-
I hate to say it, but thats not colour blind, thats just blind
It's a cracking colour though
Hmm an LP style in sort of semo trans purple to semi trans black burst (I'm getting excited now)
-
I really like that colour very 80s!
-

actually most of my stuff is normally clear coated so its not normally a problem, the reason we have purple in at the moment is possibly for this LP but i am really not sure.
Purple over redwood looks great, but the redwood looks pretty good on its own

Thats real pretty
I have to say that the best colour I ever seen on a guitar was on a batch of 'faulty' blueburst Rickenbackers.
They ended up Violet Burst but there where only 5 of them and they went for silly money 2nd hand (Ric reduced the price to the store becasue they where defective)
Sigh !

that guitar is gorgeous - the body shape, headstock shape, finish, electrics layout, YUM! bet it would look even more badass with a gloss black finish or maybe one of those red BC Rich type stained finishes :D
I once bought a mains transformer that was miswired - the guy who wired them was colorblind and had screwed up the colors (ouch!)

that LP - OMG!!! stop it, I can feel my evil side saying "buy one, buy one"
the wood looks droolsome and build quality seems very high indeed. are you doing this full time?
-
glad you like it, that guitar is made from solid paduak, the wood is bright orange when you first cut it but soon turns red. In the photo it is quite new so still has an orange tint to it- now it has taken more of a bloody, deep red colour - give it twenty years it will probably just be brown
-

Not just yet - still working otwards that. The LP is an experiment

My great grandfather was monotone colourblind and managed to diffuse bombs in the blitz. clearly he had better luck than that electrician.
That redwood LP is a BEAUT, too.

looks like my sprayer decided the same thing. He decided to take the opportunity to practice his bursts. The blend isnt great yet but we quite liked where this was going
(http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e31/WezV/IMG_0447.jpg)
Unfortunately the guy who is having it said "thats distinctly not my thing", but thats ok - i cant imagine many people can pull of a purpleburst
The back of the guitars is at least black:
-
that colour is damn coooooooooooooooooooool!
-
Well this one might not be staying purple but i think i definately need to do a nice purple burst guitar over summer, probably with this piece of maple on a korina body!!
I am thinking maybe some lp/tele hybrid. Funny how a little colour accident has me inspired
-
^ha.
yup LP/Tele hybrid in purple burst would look stunning.
keep us posted.
-
Wez, for goodness' sake, don't put a colour on that LP style guitar. A piece of wood that beautiful deserves to be displayed in its original glory! Go for a clearcoat dude, it's too pretty to paint!! :)
-
i saw a quilted redwood guitar that was finished purple at some point last year - it was stunning!! I just wish i could find photo's to prove it
This is one of my early guitars that i used a nice piece of redwood on:
I really like the wood but find the colour a bit too, well a bit too orange!!
Compare that to the redwood on a huber
http://www.huber-italia.net/images/guits/redwood_lite.jpg
and you have to admit Nik gets a much nicer colour from the wood.
What i wont be doing is what dean do with there redwood, i.e. cover it in a thick coat of black to hide the figure and end up with something lovingly referred to as a 'diarrhoea burst'
now if only i could fnd a nice example of a purple redwood guitar i am sure you would be convinced.
Also the redwood only cost me $25 so i am not worrying about it so much!!
-
As for the tele - we think we have arrived at its final colour!!!
Its been clearcoated but needs to cure for a while before it gets levelled and buffed - but the 'moonburst' looks good.
A good burst should react to the light so
Very subtle burst in natural light!!
(i said it needed levelling!!)
with more of a burst in brighter light:
-

It's a beauty - but I liked the purple better.
-
that moonburst is cool - very gothic 8)
-
Very pretty!
Is it black over the purple or did you strip the purple and just do whatever that is?
-
it was stripped back and re-done
-
nicely stripped - how was it done?
-
Lots of sanding - the best way to strip anything!!
The finish we are using at the moment is Rustins Plastic Coating. Its the stuff Brain May used on his red special. Once dry i dont think anything would strip it.
It should look 100 times better once it is all levelled off and buffed out
-
all done now,, i have tried to show it in different light to show how the burst changes:
Unfortunately i couldnt convince the guy to have BKP's in this one but i did try - he already had some seymour duncans he wanted to use - even though the wires were cut far too short and i had to replace those first!!!
I did sell him a guitar last year with a single BKP-92 - i'm trying my best.
-
Mmm- nice grain on that tele Wez
Hmm- purple seems to be in at present (whether it was intentional or not - as per your first posting)
Here is one that we have just gotten back from the paintshop.
Not muy usual style of photography - just snapped it for a first impression rather than my usual setting up the studio shot
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v662/felineguitars/CUSTOM%20BUILT/purplelionweb1.jpg)
Edited for a typo
-
^both very nice!

That looks incredible! Is that a burst, or just blacker round the edges due to the carve and the quilt?
-
always liked purple LPs - there were a couple of flametop standards knocking around the North East 5-10 years back, they were gorgeous but I was a poor student at the time.
-
Both phenomenally gorgeous.
But I can't say that Maple fretboards go too well with dark purple bursts :p

A bit of both to be fair - a very minor burst at the very edge and the light being reflected differently due to the carve
Fingerboard is Ebony with a split Mother of pearl/Black tahiti pearl inlay pattern
Pickups shown are Painkillers although will be assembled with similar looking Rebel Yells
-
The pruple Lp is great, its convinced me that i need to make something similar this summer - although i will tweak the shape a bit i reckon
-
i have been playing the tele this week because the guy who is having it is on his hols. the SD jazz in the neck sounds really nice but the hotrails really isnt doing the guitar justice so i am trying to convince him to go for something else!! I really dislike rail pickups, i had to wire a strat with Bill lawrences on thursday. I could cope with that if he had got them off bill lawrence but he used the other company that uses bills name!!! Why dont these people listen to me when i tell them to avoid something!!!!!
anyway since the rails will not be staying in the tele he wants a SD little 59 but i am trying to push him in the BKP direction - probably a BG bridge pickup
-

Seems a shame to go with the Little '59, it's giving up most of the guitar's "Tele-ness". But would the BG have enough volume to match well with the Jazz?

there was an epiphone les paul 3 pickup limited edition beast that had the same finish as that. It was so cool, as is that telecaster 8)
-
slightly off topic - but why do folk want humbukers in the neck of their teles? :? it seems a bit odd to me, and terribly backwards... I'd prefer it the other way round any day!
-
neck humbuckers are great - since i have made this guitar the switch has mainly stayed in the neck position....
the strings move more in the neck position so on the right guitar with the right pickup its kind of a holy grail thing for me tone wise... It seems to be something that works particularly well on telecasters though - having a bridge single coil and neck humbucker that is!!
thats the problem at the moment - the humbucker and hotrails dont compliment each other enough in the middle position... but with the right single coil it could be perfect!!
-
Hi Wez, I have a mini humbucker in the neck of one of my teles and I find it is perfect with the Brown Sugar. I used to have the Piledriver in there, but it wasn't quite as good a match. I now have a Slowhand neck pickup with it and it works a lot better. I used to have a tele with a full size hb, but find I like the sound of the mini better.
