Title: Wich OD/clean boost in the 100€ price range?
Post by: Hell Hound on July 07, 2007, 11:12:50 PM
Hey guys,
Me again, after my cab (wich will be a TT Rex 212, thx _tom_) I need a good OD/clean boost. It must be fairly transparent (I don't want it to force its sound on the amp/pedal/modeler/whatever), if possible true bypass and in the 100€ price range (max 130). I've found some while browsing Thomann.de :

ODs
MXR ZAKK WYLDE OVERDRIVE (http://www.thomann.de/fr/mxr_zakk_wylde_overdrivepedal.htm)
MXR CUSTOM SHOP GT-OD (http://www.thomann.de/fr/mxr_custom_shop_gt_od.htm)
SEYMOUR DUNCAN SFX-05 LAVA BOX (http://www.thomann.de/fr/seymour_duncan_sfx05_lava_box.htm)
MAXON D&S DISTORTION & SUSTAINER (http://www.thomann.de/fr/maxon_ds_distortionsustainer.htm)
[/list:u]

Boosts
ELECTRO HARMONIX NANO LPB-1 (http://www.thomann.de/fr/electro_harmonix_nano_lpb1.htm)
MXR MICRO AMP M133 (http://www.thomann.de/fr/mxr_micro_amp_m133.htm)
SEYMOUR DUNCAN SFX01 BOOSTER (http://www.thomann.de/fr/seymour_duncan_sfx01_pickupbooster.htm)
[/list:u]

I do like the way the MXR Zakk & MXR GT OD sounds but I fear they might force their sound a bit too much. Never tried one but I quite like the simplicity and cheapness of the EH LPB-1, the MXR just looks the same and price higher... The one really intriguing me is the SD Lava Box with it's voicing switch, not transparent but could be interesting. I'm a little lost in all these, if anyone could help :)

There are so many choices, I foresee this thread becoming a total gang bang. However, for a clean boost: I LOVE my Thundertomate treble booster. Best clean boost I've come across!

this is very touchy in which guitar, which amp goes best with which pedal, keep in mind slightest changes in the boost behaviour will be multiplied by the sensitive input stage of your amp that you will push with it.

I would always go to a shop with my gear to find the best match, unless you're prepared to do a lot of buy/sell swap action on the way there.

I've heard great things about Blackstar pedals and they're not too  expensive (about £80 if I remember). They've got a valve in em too!

I'll go try some  at my fav shop, the problem is I'll be using it with a variety of amps and pedals so there's no perfect match :?
edit: That award session looks nice, not too pricey... :)

Try Jack Orman, many of the highly recomended clean boosts on the market are clones of his designs.

Fulltone Fat Boost owns; pure, clean, and adds even order harmonics to your tone to fatten it up

Better than HBE's clean boost. Dunno about HBE's treble booster. However, I would be amazed if the HBE was better. The Thundertomate is an astounding pedal.

Note: The Thundertomate also costs about 3x what the HBE does, so it's really apples and oranges.

Yeah, that's the one I have, too; the Phil Hilborne signature model. However, since the price limit is 100 quid, I didn't reccomend the fat boost version.

I have a clean boost for sale

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BBE-Boosta-Grande-Clean-Boost-Pedal-BNIB_W0QQitemZ130130792744QQihZ003QQcategoryZ22669QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

It's brand new, never used - it is a clean boost, and if you are using a valve amp it does push it to more natural overdrive. Not sure if this is what you are after though

Thanks

Hey compatriote!
I recommend you to have a look at those Banzaο pedal ( http://www.banzaieffects.com/ )

It's quite more expensive (220eur Pigalle price but I think you can get it a bit cheaper on the internet   ) but i tried the Double rising sun double boost, and the thing is soooo powerfull and clear.... the other stuff mentionned here, i don't know, never used them...

I already checked those Banzai, they do sound nice on paper but too pricey for me  :? I'm leaning toward a MXR Zakk, not the best but it's relatively cheap...

MXR make great pedals, I have it (as mentioned before) and its excellent. The price:quality ratio is fairly high!!
