What a pile of cr@p. If you don't have digital you were forced to watch the live coverage miss at least a third of Metallica's set and the end of Spinal Tap.
We did get to watch all of James Blunt though  C*NT!
I thought the Foo Fighters & and the Pussycat Dolls were the only ones who turned up and made a real performance. Funny but I had zero expectations of these two but credit where it's due.
Chilli Peppers were good as usual but workmanlike going on so early.
-
Was impressed by the playing by both Chilli Peppers and Foo Fighters.
Was very unimpressed by Madonna etc.
What was the blue Gibson with the sharks fin wholes Grohl was playing?
Edit: Found out - Gibson Trini Lopez.
-

Yeah, but I loved her having Gogol Bordello on.
The sight of two gypsys dressed like pirates prancing about by all these uber slick dancers cracked me up.
-
Annoyingly I just missed Metallica, but loved Spinal Tap "Hello Wimbledon!".
What got me though was the whole point of the concert was to raise awareness of Global warming yada yada yada. How many of those interviewed actually commited to making a change or said they already do something? About all I heard was the Pussycat Dolls will use less hairspray but they think the terminator is doing a good job in California and one of the guys in Blackeyed Peas has a hybrid car that he'll be driving when not in his Hummer. Way to go save the planet
Aside from a few highlights very disappointing
Oh and Shakira was wearing far too many clothes
-
The Foo's were the only ones with a good sound. And having the sheer amount of people singing along with My Hero was awesome. Put on a good show too, Dave Grohl was built for a gig that huge.
The Chili's were disappointing. They are even using a 2nd guitarist live now.
-
Guess I gotta jump in for Madonna, as
-Her show and the quality of the whole dancing etc was awesome
-Her guitarist with his rig of white orange amps got an extra podium and didn't have to hide in the back
-She made an effort to learn play guitar and had a reasonably cool Les Paul and an uebercool white rockerverb 50 where she did some sweet feedbacking supported by an extra dude who was operating the volume/gain on the amp, I thought that was quite remarkeable
-Her version of "La isla bonita" was the shitee, and I loved this song ever since I've been 13
But one thing, this dress with padded shoulders and high heels just do not go with playing a distorted Les Paul, it doesn't compute period.
-
Funny how madonna was going for a look courtney love perfected in the 90's.
I wasnt sure - was she was doing the Dolly Parton thing or not? - tuning open so you can play with one finger!!
Gogol Bordello - did make that set a lot of fun. And the guitarist also got me wondering where you can get white tune-o-matics and tuners from
It looks like Dave grohl had been visiting the gibson custom shop - a matching blue trini lopez and firebird . . . Very nice!! And they always put on a great show
-
I agree with the BBC being idiots. Cutting off spinal tap to see some Rhianna in Germany.
Im sure there will be on the website for watching again like on Live 8.
-
The only band I was interested in "the police" I didn't get to see must of been on way too late or something. Sound quality was pretty bad to my ears for all the bands I saw though.

Well Saturday night is camp night these days.
What with Graham Norton, Maria, Joseph, Grease, dancing on ice, strictly ballroom, soapstar super star, stars in their eyes, pop idol and even Dr Who
Personally I'm surprised that anything other than Kylie, Madonna, George Michael, Elton John and the Scissor Sisters was shown !
Oops that was the Dianna gig wasn't it
Rob...
Even though I have to say that I am not macho enough to watch Sky 1,2 or 3 and I do quite enjoy the Scissor Sisters now and again
-
You can watch it all on www.msn.com :D I'm watching Bon Jovi at the minute, sounds great. Also just been watching John Mayer, great tone and nice strats, but so boring! Saw Foo Fighters last night and thought they put on the best show of the lot.
I have to say I wasnt really bothered that they cut off Metallica, I thought they sounded a bit cr@p. They were only going into Enter Sandman anyway!
edit - the guitarist playing with Roger Waters with the tele has such good tone! This isnt helping gas
-
+1 on Foo Fighters... they were excellent. and the blue firebird was damn cool.
speaking of metallica, few friends of mine are seeing them... today i think it is...?
at wembley/wembley arena (cant remember which).
-
i kinda, er, forgot about it.
-
thing is though... surely televising the event in the first place is a bit hypocritical... they could have been even more 'pro-earth' if they'd said;
"No- you can't sit at home and use energy by watching it on TV... these famous acts will only be viewed by people at the concert"...
if you see what i mean
-
then i'd have had to catch a plane. or make some kind of hovercraftmobile...
that'd be cool.
-

or you could pull a david walliams-esque swimming mission...
-
nah, i suck at swimming.

Probably would have been more energy efficent for everybody to stay at home

and Rob- yes- i think your definitely right...
(especially with Dave's gas guzzling 'hovercraftmobile' involved...)

Spinal Tap was great! Metallica was a bit disappointing. Jaymz' voice was terrible and I could hardly hear his guitar. I never thought of Metallica as environmentalists. Jaymz hunts and all of 'em drive trucks and hot rods.
Today I took my Mustang to the Dutch Mustang Club track day and thrashed it around the track for 20 minutes. I burned up half a tank of fuel today to help warm up the Earth.
-
cr@ppy line up and sound aside, did anyone else wonder how much energy was needed to power the lighting rigs, masive pa system and transporting the artists around the planet? Then multiply that by the number of concerts around the world.
Yes one cynical scientist here. Dont believe the hype.
-
haha... well the whole was supposed to be "carbon neutral"...
-
Yeah, I watched a tiny bit and was thinking "They'd better be powering all those lights and cr@p with solar panels or something, because if they aren't that's one huuge box of hypocrisy sitting over there..." :D
-
It was bio diesel apparently
-
I missed it all cos I was playing a gig and I had a bloody great time.
-
see- beatle is the real music lover here.
just out of interest- what music do you play 38th? i might make a thread bout this- i know next to nothing about everyone's music on here...
-
Well I am in two bands at the moment greedy sod that I am. Last night is general covers from 1960's through to now -I play lead and rhythm guitar-nothing heavy but a fair bit of classic rock and blues.I have to sing about 50% so it is hard work (as we played for 3 hours last night). The other band is more rock and blues and I play bass in that but I only sing a few cos two other guys do the bulk. Keeps me busy Sam.
-
^cool!.
i can't imagine playing for 3 hours... even just guitar let alone singing as well.
i'd love to be in 2 regular gigging bands. lucky so and so!
must come and see you some time. oh and i still really wanna hear some of your son's piano stuff! :)
-
I missed it all cos I was playing a gig and I had a bloody great time.
Snap!
Wish I'd Sky+'d it to see the Foos, Metallica and Spinal Tap though. I forgot
-
you can always youtube it instead
-
Call me a cynic but this was just an excuse to capitalise on the marketing/hype and aspects of 'being seen to be green'.
I think its fair to say that we've known about the effects of pollution on the environment for 20-30 years (probably longer?) but back then it wasn't cool to be a 'tree hugger'. Its just another marketing bandwagon that'll have little effect on the environment other than increase carbon air miles etc due to all those 'stars' jetting around the world..............
ahem rant over.....
-
The polution was, supposedly, paid off. So it's OK to pollute as long as you pay for it. In that case, I have nothing to worry about, I pay plenty of VAT, taxes, excise duties etc. that's all supposed to go to the environment.
And I agree with DeanS on this.

You can watch it all on MSN still I think. Smashing Pumpkins werent as good as I'd hoped, they didnt look very excited to be there :(
I think the whole thing was a bit pointless as well due to reasons allready said, they should've only had bands from each country performing in their own country, and made everyone cycle or walk to the venue :P
-
when do the smashing pumpkins look excited about anything though? Billy Corgan is the most moronic depressed looking 30 year old teenager in the world!
-
(especially with Dave's gas guzzling 'hovercraftmobile' involved...)
FYI, my HoverCraftMobile (TM, i registered it, i think the capitalisations are cool too) is 100% carbon-neutral. No carbon is destroyed in its running. Plenty is converted to CO and CO2, but none is destroyed, nosirree.
-

maybe i could also trademark some kind of catapult device. that'd be pretty green.
-
Saw a little bit of the live coverage, chris rock made the day for me to be honest, introducing the chillis:
"hi wembly, you know paris hilton is going to be playing here soon, we still have some tickets left if you want to buy them"
*dead silence from the audience*
"I was joking mother$%er"
Cut to johnathan ross looking completely lost as to how to recover chris rocks fumble, i was dying with laughter.
As for awareness of green issues, i guess no one thought about the cost of flying performers and guests in from all around the globe, the pollution caused by all the audience driving down to the arena and all of the electricity needed to power the whole gig?
Although i did enjoy alot of the people johnathan ross interviewed, they all seemed kinda against saving energy etc and sceptical on global warming, was quiet amusing in general.
-
^ hahaha yeah Chris Rock is hilarious, i laughed my arse off
