Title: New guitar- Burny LP! updated- pics!
Post by: sambo on July 10, 2007, 10:37:56 AM
it's arrived! 1983 Burny LP Custom, shiny blue finish. gold hardware with black scratchplate.

EDIT: dont ask what its doing on the grass... my oh-so-intelligent mate decided it would be a good idea to lay it down on the lawn whilst i was inside. :?

parcelforce man delivered it this morning and i managed to convince him i was my dad some how, so i signed for it.

this thing is incredible. i thought the finish looked nice in the photos, but i mean... jesus christ... this thing is BLUE!... it's such a deep colour, almost sparkly but not exactly... as soon as i can nab a good camera from someone i'll take some photos... i can't even put the ones from the shop's website up because it's now been taken down!

anyway, yer, it plays fantastically and feels of really high quality build/finish. in fact just checking the binding now, (triple black/white or whatever you call it) it's absolutely perfect.

the guy said it was 'near mint' condition and it really is.

there's a tiny bit of buzz on the lower strings but the action is ridiculously low so i'll sort that out in no time.

the neck is perfect; chunky but not overly so- i was worried i wouldnt cope with it but its great.

the hardware is all faded as i think i discussed with dave; which means it doesn't look cheap or naf at all... the whole guitar has quite a vintagey feel to it. (it is 25 years old after all!)

sound wise, it's got the apparently well-regarded 'VH-1s', which are supposed to be great. for stock pickups, (actually after a discussion with the seller they might be 'non-stock' pickups but you get what i mean), they're great.

very classic rock, not a great deal of 'oomph' or low-end but apart from that they're nice. (i'll probably swap them out at some point as i can sell 'em for a tidy packet on ebay).

overall... i couldn't be happier! :D  :D  :D  :D

I'm very pleased to hear that, Sambo!  My Orville LP goldtop - which I bought from the same guy - turned out to be nowhere near what I'd call "near mint".  I would've said, but I didn't see your thread about the Burny until after you'd ordered it.

Sounds good.  Looking forward to the pics.  :D

funny you should say that actually- i was looking at a couple of his others... and one of his "excellent" rating guitars had a massive hole (as in... a 2cm wide HOLE not a little ding or chip) near the neck....  so it is a bit suspect.

i've had some closer looks and there's quite a few scr@pes and scratches on the back and a little on the sides... so it probably isnt actually near mint at all, the thing is the blue finish lends itself REALLY well to hiding marks so you barely notice anything.

pics should be up by tomorrow!

cheers guys! :D

cheers rob.

and just out of interest- i dunno why i didnt notice this earlier.

is there a pickup the BK VH-II's are modelled on?

i say that 'cause i can't remember why they're VH 2's instead of VH 1's... and i have VH 1's in the Burny...

so could it be that the BKs are actually modelled on/inspired by these pickups?

just a theory.

I thought it was cos VHII is a great album.

:D The VH2`s are modeld on Van Halens 2nd album. It`s more about getting nearer the "Brown sound" as EVH used to refer to it. They sound great in Mahogany/Maple cap guitars. A Vintage type Tone but with more bite.

ahah there we go. (proves my Van Halen ignorance- didnt even know there was a "VHII" album   )

cheers for the replies guys.

and jt- i might actually consider buying a set; especially after that description.

the VH1s are in that ballpark anyway, but a BK take on that kinda sound would be cool to try out.

has anyone heard of these old VH1s by the way? i had done a little bit of reading up on them and knew they were well-regarded, but they are actually fantastic. yesterday, after tweaking with my Screamer and cranking the volume a little bit, they got one of the best lead tones i've ever heard in person!

:D Theres been a lot of attempts by manufacturers to get a EVH "Brown sound" type of P/U. i cant say i`ve actually heard of these ones but they sound like there getting you there. As for the VH2`s i`ve got a set in my Tradition guitar [ Mahogany/Maple cap ] They sound brilliant. Willo who is on this forum had a set put in his LP you can ask him what he thought of `em.

BUT there is a flip side. They are referd to as "A players P/U" this means they are like most if not all low gain P/U`s they are unforgiving of sloppy playing. You do have to be resonably precise with your playing but the sound you get is worth it imho

^cheers for that.

interesting- i'd never even contemplated that kind of pickup before... certainly never aimed for the brown sound! but i'm definitely liking it at the mo.

I really like that colour - bold, yet at the same time subtle.

^dead right. its a good balance between being quite flash, but without looking like a fool at the same time.

the first picture gives a better indication of the true colour, but it changes quite a lot in the light; hence why it looks considerably different in the second.

that's very, very nice. If the shade of blue in the, er, "natural habitat" pic is accurate, that's a really nice shade. the double binding is super-sweet too.

Awesome.

And from the looks of it, everyone's better at taking pics than me.

cheers steve.

in the blue finish they're pretty rare as far as i know- i've looked around to try and find a similar example and haven't found one yet.

of course if your just talking Burny LPs then that's a different story as there's usually a few on Ebay and shops like www.japanguitars.co.uk
