Damn! I installed my Nailbomb in my Ibanez S1220 yesterday, haven't restrung it yet, but today I was just checking it out and it just hit me, I took the ruler out and compared it to the QM2 that was once sitting there and yep, sure enough, the original pickup is 50mm, whereas I ordered a 53mm Nailbomb. shite! How much of a difference will this make? I've soldered it in place and all, the box it came with is a little tortured and the strings have already been used on another guitar. Is it worth sending it back for a 50mm?
-
I thought the S1220 had a Floyd :?:, in which case I'd be very surprised if the 53mm spacing doesn't match.
Have you actually got it strung up yet?
-
It's got an original Edge, I think. I was surprised too. I haven't strung it, but what made me take out the ruler was the fact that I was checking out the bridge and just "draw lines" from there over the pole pieces and it didn't seem to match. :? And I'm confident the QM2 is 50mm.
The shipping fees are quite the bitch so I'm wondering, is the difference audible enough for it to be worth it? I'd guess it is. :(
EDIT: Yep, using a ruler to decide where the strings will go, they're definietly offset compared to the pole pieces. They are supposed to be straight over them, no? shiteeshiteeshitee.

You're right the QM2 does have 50mm spacing. I replace mine with a 53mm nailbomb aswell and it lines up witht the strings far better. nothing to worry about - Your S series will sound as great as mine :D
Good luck wiring it up btw - they have ridiculous switching.
-
You have a ZR tremolo though, right? Ah well, I guess I'll buy some strings today anyway and try it out, but it doesn't look like it'll line up well at all on mine. :/
-
What's the actual spacing across the bridge saddles themselves?
-
Hmm, I measured across where the strings actually "come out" (or rather, in) the bridge, and it's about 54-55mm. I'll buy strings now anyway and try it out and take some pictures, so I'll be coming back later today.

That's typical Floyd spacing, just a little less than vintage Fender spacing. That being the case, the 53mm pickup will line up better than 50mm. I'll stake, er, somebody else's life on it.

Yeah it's a bitch, how have you wired yours? 'Cause right now I only got my bridge pickup wired

i didnīt understand this
i had the same guitar you have.
Ibanez S1220 WNF Prestige.natural finish. qm1 and qm2. pickups.
the qmpickups arenīt floyd spaced. thats $%ign Weird.
since you have a floyd spaced nailbomb and it ALLIGNS with the strings.. theres no problem with that
If the nailbomb 53mm isnīt matching the string spacing.. then it could be a problem.
otherwise,no.

It sounds alright to me, but I've never played a BKP or a pickup with wrong spacing so I'm unsure.
-
it will be fine where it is. it isnt really out.
-
^ i have played a 53mm in a 50mm guitar and to be honest i can't hear any difference so it doesn't really matter.
-
Either the bridge is a bit far to the left, or the pickup's a bit far to the right, but it's the correct spacing. If you had a 50mm pickup on there now the low E would miss the polepiece altogether.
-
^ i agree, from the looks of it, 50mm would be even worse.

on mine its the high E :?
either way, doesn't sound different
and the local guitar tech said its no real issue

looks aligned to me
you can bend the extremities to push it to the left (i did it)
-
did you apply any finishing to your guitar body?
mine didnīt have that finish. it was NATURAL finish
iīll post a pic of it..

Alright guys, thanks for the inputs, I've tried the guitar out and I really can't hear that anything is wrong. I'm having second thoughts about the pickup itself though, so I think I'll send Tim another email.
In short, I like how thick it is, and I like it's cleans, but I'd like some more chug. AV Warpig? And how long after I recevied the pickup can I send it back? Maybe I'm better of trying to sell it and buy a brand new one?
Oh, nevermind, the absence of chug was mostly because of my still quite poor palmmute technique with the Edge bridge, lol.
I'll keep this pickup for now, it sounds great. :)
WFD: No man, it came like this from the factory as far as I know, the finish is called TKS if I remember correctly, Transparent Black "Something"? (not satin, cause it's really gloss as you can see). It's more or less natural with a slight black burst and natural binding.
