Title: Zakk Wylde's Early Tone
Post by: JamesHealey on July 13, 2007, 06:54:20 PM
Is it just me or when Zakk was using Celestion speakers on the early ozzy stuff for instance the "No Rest For The Wicked" album, his tone was absolutely fantastic! I mean totally awe-inspiring..

What happened? im guessing the only thing he changed was to the Electro Voice speakers which gave a much more "clinical" sound, heavier for sure but not as toneful imo.

anyone else noticed this or am I just a knob?

According to the March 1989 Guitar Player he was using high wattage celestions, 2 Ashley FET 500 power amps and 2 custom Metaltronix 100 watt heads. Can't believe I still have this issue around.  :)

And shampoo. Maybe even a conditioner.

he used Celestions again on the Pride & Glory LP - explains why his tone rocks on that album too.  my Zakk-mad friend informed me they were G12T-75s.

i thought he changed in the early 2000's to the other speakers?
suppose in the old days he didn't use his chorus so much, or have it dialed so deep.
Zakk's metaltronix rack looks confuzzling to me.
Was he ever using greenbacks?

something not to mention here... i read in a review that 'no rest for the wicked' was a good example of raw EMG's

Metaltronix eh?.. Lee Jackson has been responsible for a shed load of great 80's tones, Im sure vai was using a Lee Jackson modded marshall at some point..

It's funny how he uses all these great amps like Roccaforte, Metaltronix but he endorses Marshall.. it's such a load of bullshitee!

Marshalls are still great amps; including the ZW signatures - not boutique, but great sounding and influential none-the-less. I do, however, agree that folk should endorse what they use, not who pays them the most...

Indysmith, the JCM800 and 1959SLP are the standard of rock imo.. But there is this unfair promise that if you buy a les paul, emg's, the zk mxr pedal and a 6550 loaded 800 ur going to nail his tone.

Just ain't gonna happen although im sure u'd get close, very close.
