Title: I want new pickups for my telecaster, please help!
Post by: duffman18 on July 25, 2005, 06:47:09 PM
Well, basically, I want very high gain pickups, for playing metal you see, and as little noise as possible.

My choice for the bridge pickup is either a Dimarzio Tone Zone T (a humbucker in a single coil size) or something by Bare Knuckles.

I would prefer bare knuckle pickups to be honest, though.

Would the Piledriver be enough for metal and hard rock?  I'm not sure whether it would.  How much would it cost to get a custom wound bridge pickup?  Something like an uber sinner for telecaster?

For the neck, I want something that has the qualities of a humbucker, to play overdriven blues, in the style of Gary Moore and Eric Clapton.  So how much would it cost to get a custom wound neck pickup that sounds something like a PAF?

First up, welcome to the forum :D
The Piledriver is great if you're used to humbuckers, it's based on a lapsteel, very hot and fat. However if you ant something hotter an uber wind can be arranged  ..............I don't charge extra as long as it's straight forward.
I'd like to make it clear that I don't wind humbucking single coils, simply beacuae I've never heard a good one but I 'm sure we can get you going with a great metal sounding Tele set.

Sweet!  Thanks man.

So yeah, a custom wound piledriver for the bridge, and maybe just a regular piledrive in the neck?

No,I'd custom wind the neck too for more power if you're really wanting to rip on it.

Cheers!  You really do have good service!  I hope that once you get really big, you won't get worse on quality (like some things do, for instance PRS guitars have dropped in quality a lot since they started selling loads more guitars).

Maybe one day you can strike up a deal with a guitar company so that a certain range of guitar comes equipped with BKPs as standard!  You will be the death of active pickups (and that's a good thing).

If you want to know, I regularly go on a forum called http://www.musicianforums.com/ and whenever somebody asks about what pickups to buy, loads of people reccomend BKPs, so obviously the word is spreading!

But yeah, anyway, so a set of custom wound high gain telecaster pickups for the same price as a normal set of pickups?  Sweet.  I don't have the money yet, but I will do in a few months hopefully.  Thankyou again for your quick reply.

An uber Tele set........I wanna hear some of that. Welcome to the forum, Duffman! :drink:

When you have the pickups installed, could you make us some soundclips?

I'm very curious about how it would sound. I bet a lot of others here are too.

I'd be interested in Tele pickup info of any description, sounds etc. I was going to buy a cheap Tele knockoff just recently but bought a nice limited colour Ibanez AXS32 in Condensed Cream instead. Stretched my budget so I'll have to wait before buying any BKPs, not sure whether to go for Mississippi Queens or humbuckers.

We need some P90 sounds too!

I just played a Les Paul through my tube amp today, and it sounded great.

But the thing is, will these uber tele pickups sound as good as a Gibby LP standard's pickups?

Oh, and there's one thing I'm worried about, and that's noise.  These will be single coils, and so I'm worried about how noisy they'll be, considering I'll be using them with a lot of gain.  So what are the noise levels like?

Any of our pickups will sound better than stock Gibson pickups, because of the fact that they are hand wound and use higher quality components.

The noise shouldn't be too much of an issue. Check out the clip of the uber coil in the players room. I expect Tim was thinking of winding something along those lines for you.
