whats your views??
i have to sell up my cab as im moving into a smaller place for my new job so i cant have my cab taking up all th space...plus i wont be able to crank it
so i need a combo....but ill likely be joinin another band so its needs to be loud enough for a bit of brutality
so would a 50watt tube amp do?i think it likely would
im a metal head at heart so bear that in mind for suggestions.but i want a really soild sounding clean channel....like a fender but with balls!!i just prefer it that way i dont like too much chorus or what not on clean parts.but that doesnt really matter ...
-
Why don't you just get a smaller cab? Like a 2x12". It's not be much bigger than a combo amp.
-
I'd say ENGL screamer. There's also the valvetronix series of modelling amps, if you get bored with one sound.

+ 1000000 for ENGL
Mark
-
Sounds like an ENGL Screamer would suit you fine. I was close to buying one myself a couple of years ago now but couldn't afford it in the end.
I remember I got to play a Ibanez PGM and a vintage 1959 Fender strat. The tones I got from the guitars and amp sounded awesome. It can go from very clean and pristine, to a slightly dirty blues tone, raw overdrive for liquidy leads and a quite powerfull grind tone.
-
i would agree with ENGL Screamer for what you describe. definitely.
-
+1 on the engl screamer. they generally have them in the belfast guitar emporium so you could check them out there.
Genz benz el diablo would also be worth a look, mac 2 music in banbridge are dealers. Bear in mind, though, a lot of people seem to hate them with a vengeance (they're almost like krank in that respect).
-
i've enver heard a genz benz. anyone got any clips?
-
So a combo for Metal?
More early 90s Metallica or more the new metal stuff?
What's the budget?
-
they have a few on their website (not sure what the exact address is).
and theres quite a few on youtube as well.
i really want to try one.
EDIT: yes- exactly- what's the budget??
screamer you can get for £600+ in some places... the Genz Benz i havent seen anywhere for less than £800
-
<1000 EUR => Engl Screamer Combo
1000 -1,500 EUR => Marshall VM Combo?
1,500 - 2,000 EUR => Diezel Einstein 50W or Budda Superdrive 30 Combo
Other cool options:
Mesa Rectifier Combos
Engl Savage Combo
Orange Rockerverb 50 Combo
Bogner Shiva Combo
and many many more ...
-
6505/5150 combo looks the best imo :>
-
^although i've heard negative things about the cleans... (only hear-say- ive never tried one myself)
-
Had an ENGL Screamer and a Mesa Recto.
Out of these two mesa won hands down, in both gain and cleans territory.
Having said that, Mesa are abit more costly but worth it IMO.
And having played the 5150 at real volumes for some time I would have to say Yuck!
-
for what its worth... in terms of the Screamer vs. it's price-range equivalent of Mesa, (something like an F30 or a rect-o-verb or trem-o-verb combo, although even those are a couple of hundred quid more expensive), i much prefer the ENGL.
it all still comes down to budget really as any mesa might even be out of the question. and personal taste as each have a distinctive sound.
-
I just got an ENGL Thunder combo and it brilliant for the money It all depends on how much you want to spend.
-

i hear the emporium is closed down...well ill head to bel on wednesday to see.
i love the thickness of a mesaboogie but i dont wanna spend that much on a combo....yet.i have to see if i get this new job sorted 1st as itll bring in th cash nicely so my funds limit might raise abit but about 500-600 sterling is what i wanna pay now.
it looks liike the sreamer, anyone use laney combos?

I have a VC30 212 and a JCM800 100w so I have crystal clean and monster distortion. The VC won't be gainy enough for you but check out LC and AOR range!!

well man im not into V.high gain...well im not sure actually but i like very thick chunky sound distortion not sharp "bzzty" soundin distortion...if you get me.
like alot of distortion pedals produce very artifical buzzy distortion an that dont tickle me at all.
or is there a distorion pedal out there that gets a tone like a slab of concrete?
-
mesa combo with sweet cleans and ballsy gain-look to the DC 5 (50 watts)
get these in 5-600 USD range
-if you want a mesa with killer gain and tightness,go for a mark series combo-MK I ,II, and IV will be a little costly...can find MK III for less7-800 USD)
something to think about...50 mesa watts is gi-normous_I have a MK IV and it is ungodly loud
my MK IIC+ is a 300 watt Coliseum-fugettaboutit
-
i defo am considerin puttin some more cash an getin a mesa just for that really huge gain sound, but i guess ill likely get a 2nd hand amp so it depends on whats around unless i get a good deal from a store.
plus i need to get thats expansion option with runni a cab from it but thats likely standard on those uppermarket combos with that much power
-
Matamp Chino any good?
Can get them with quite a few amps right?

yep...a popular combo in the boogie world is a Mk series combo running both the combo speaker and adding a 1x12 with an EV 200 watt speaker-doesnt look like a 4x12 monsta but it sure sounds like one-not taxing on the back,I might add :)

ENGL Screamer +1
Had one for years and it's so good for the money!
-

I agree. Not to say something like a tremoverb isn't a better amp than a screamer, but here it's like £1500, while a screamer can be had for a little over £600 from thomann. Is the mesa 3 times better? Not in my opinion. Also, as you say, sam, I'd even prefer a screamer to an f50, and the f50 is almost twice the price of the screamer.
let's be honest, at US prices, mesas are a very, very serious proposition. At UK prices, in my opinion at least, they aren't. They're well into boutique territory, and don't really sound as good as the boutique stuff, in my opinion. It also depends on the tone you're after, obviously enough.
I agree about the 5150, the cleans are awful. If you need nice cleans, I can't see how you wouldn't be disappointed. It's almost a non-starter for that very reason, IMO.

is it? yarg. Instrumental in Dublin do them, but that's quite a way to go. Still, would be better than buying unseen, in case you don't like it- it has its own tone, doesn't really sound like a mesa...
the laney tt combo might be worth a look, or a vc50 if you can find one second hand on ebay or similar- problem is, i'm not aware of any laney dealers who'd be liable to have them in stock in ireland. I've only ever been able to try the more expensive laneys when I've been on holiday in england and scotland. Obviously, though, I may have missed somewhere, lol.
if you want to try mesa, by the way, reasound are dealers, i think i remember you saying you were in cookstown.
Basically, I'd say engl have as much, if not more, gain than a mesa (though obviously it does depend on the model, the screamer probably has a bit less gain than some of the other engls)- but it will sound noticeably different. It's kind of hard to advise on something which is very much personal preference...
wow, long post. bear in mind, any time I say I like engl, that's my preference, yours may be different. Good luck!
i've enver heard a genz benz. anyone got any clips?
there are some on youtube, i wouldn't trust them though, they don't really sound like the one i tried.
if you do want the mesa sound, the Genz Benz will probably do it better than the engl... but be advised it's a very love-hate type of amp. Over at harmony central, the el diablo has almost become the new whipping boy, in place of krank. I like it, but i can realise why a lot don't, and it is very dark-sounding.
-
I've never heard a bad word about the Laney Lionheart.
-
I can say nothing bad about the Engl Screamer but you might also want to look into a Fender Prosonic or Supersonic.
-
prosonics are great...fender with boogie distortion
-
if you find somewhere that has a prosonic, let me know, i've never seen one!
-
Not gonna type it all out again - But I've just done a summary of the Engl Screamer for noodle here (http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9016&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=30) that may be of some use
