Title: differences between engl fireball and screamer
Post by: JDC on July 17, 2007, 08:00:52 PM
what's the difference between the engl fireball and the screamer?

the only thing I can find is the screamer has reverb and a balanced output on the back and the 2nd master volume is on the back

The fireball is more brutal sounding and generally bought by death metallers, Screamer is more versatile i think.

the screamer is a little more versatile too as it has the four "channels" : clean, crunch, lo-lead and hi-lead were as  the fireball just has two, clean and hi-gain.

the Fireball is a 2 channel Powerball, the Screamer is a different amp all together, the Fireball is a better amp than the Screamer

The Fireball is by far my favorite ENGL. And it's not just for Metal. The guy from Deep Purple (Steve Morse?) uses one there.

It has a very nice clean sound and great highgain sounds. Death Metallers usually go for the Powerball AFAIK.

yeah, us lot normally opt for the powerball...

although the fireball is basically a 60watt, 2 channel powerball - it has some lovely charateristics which are sometimes preferable to the powerball... it can really brown sound it. Also, it saturates more and sonically sounds alot more pleasing and doesn't rip your ears open - don't get me wrong; the powerball can sound like that but you have to crank it and unless you're playing festivals or bigger stages - you rarely get too.

the screamer is also a great amp - similar to the blackmore tonally.

i think the fireball is more similar to a 2-channel savage than powerball.

Basically, the fireball has two channels: clean and out-and-out br00tal death metalz gain. I wouldn't buy one unless i was a 100% modern metalhead.

Screamer is a lot more versatile, having 4 channels. Can do everything from clean to metal, but if you only play metal, the fireball will do that better, it has more gain, more low end, etc.. But if you need much (or indeed any!) versatility, the fireball is basically a non-starter.

The blackmore would be another suggestion in that (rough) price range. it's my favourite of the "cheaper" engls. Will do metal and hard rock  better than a screamer, in my opinion, while remaining a lot more versatile than the fireball.
