Title: Clean Boost/Over Drive Pedals
Post by: JamesHealey on July 18, 2007, 09:46:13 AM: Ok guys im wanting to push my Cornford Hurricane a bit harder, the basic tone of the amp is astonishingly good, it just needs a little help with the front end to keep up with the 80s guitar solos ;)

I really love the sound of this amp, so I don't want to colour the tone at all, it's tone is mind blowingly good.. so guys what u suggest?

Post by: indysmith on July 18, 2007, 09:49:11 AM: my Fulltone fat boost couldn't be more transparent; It boosts with the level and the gain control simply adds even-order harmonics to fatten up the sound. There is a tone control - but if you are serious about transparency you can put it on "10" and it is bypassed.

Post by: DeanS on July 18, 2007, 11:11:39 AM: I have a Cornford Harly and use either a Route 66, BSM treble booster and an Xotic BB preamp. If I had to chose one it'd be the BB preamp- masses of gain available, virtually noisless, can be used as a clean boost and is very very transparent- it gives you MORE of the amps natural characteristics.

The RC is quite a low-gain boost.
The AC is medium-gain overdrive.
The BB is more of a distortion pedal.

I have the AC Booster, and use it to boost my Rivera R55. The pedal is absolutely fantastic, and couldn't be more transparent.

Although it has the ability to add distortion it is very transparent at lower gain /high volume settings and can add 30db of clean boost plus +/- 15db bass/treble. I'm not a huge effects fan but I really like the Xotic pedals.

I do not yet own one, but according to Harmony Central, they seem to be described as more silent that the Zvex 'Super Hard on' which I first considered.

I also like the idea of a larger casing, separate + and - phase out - and the idea of it internally converting the 9v supply to 18volts to give more headroom within which to work.

I see they have some in stock at 'strings direct'.

Also, on : forum.TPNgear.com

There is an interesting article in the 'Barber Shop' section( written by David Barber himself ) - about gain staging and "amp cooking".

I however would be using it on a clean amp to get more of the same but lifted by a few dB.

What a great pedal for the money tried it against a DS1, TS9, ZW MXR..

Wasn't after anything ridiculously boutique i wanted something quite compressed and 80s tube screamer sounding, cover up that sloppy picking technique ;)
