Title: looking for opinions
Post by: CJ on July 18, 2007, 10:59:13 PM
well, i'm looking to spend money... i haven't bought anything in a while.  I'm really liking the Jackson RR5 in ivory. I've always wanted a randy rhoads guitar. i could've had one a couple years back but i was ignorant and thought that nothing was as good as a gibson. anyway, most reviews i've seen on this guitar seem to be pretty good. My only complaint is that it doesn't have a floyd like i'm pretty sure Randy's had. also, is the pick guard removable? i know Randy's didn't have that gold pickguard. anyway, i'm thinking of selling the V and picking up a used RR5. also, a big consideration would be: will my Miracle Man sound any better in the RR5?

i also had an idea. i've been complaining that my MM doesn't sound big enough in my V. I know it shouldn't really in that skinny guitar, but could it be that i'm using a 4x10 cab? when i was looking at reviews for my marshall 3203 artist, most reviewers said that the 1965A cab that comes with it sounds best, so i got that. i'm wondering if it'd make that big of a difference to go with a 4x12 cab, or if a new guitar would be more worth the money.

My very basic understanding is that Randy had the Sandoval polka dot V (which is now being made as a limited edition run for those who can afford it)  and some Jackson offset Vs, a cream one with pinstripes, Strat style bridge and no scratchplate, and a black one with the slightly smaller body (this is the classic RR shape) no trem and gold scratch plate. I think he had a 3rd Jackson but AFAIK its the same as the black one.
I think randy wanted to distance himself from EVH which is why he didn't use the trem so much and I don't think he used a floyd at all.

ok well i knew he had a trem on it, i guess i just figured it was a floyd. i don't know the difference, i've never had a guitar with a trem.

Floyds didn't exist at this time yet. He died in 82 didn't he? A little too early for his earlier Jacksons.

The RR5 can't get no pickguards. The electronics are under it I think, you'd have a hole.

I've never played an actual RR5 but Japanese Jacksons are about as good as import guitars go, to me much better than Schecters or LTDs.

I think Floyd Rose started making his bridges in '77, originally double locking but no fine tuners. EVH had an early one on his black 'n' yeller for a while. But they certainly weren't popular until the 80s.

:D EVH used a custom made Floyd Rose in `77. He was having Tunning Problems with the Fender styled trems. Its one of those legend storys that go about that due to EVH`s influence & his talking to other guitarists on the circuit that Floyd got a good reputation & ended up becoming the  name he now is.

if you really really need a floyd on an RR5, there is the RR1 or RR24 or a custom RR clone from someone like Ran guitars

stay away from the RR3 it's licensed and if I use the bar it goes out of tune (no matter how much I stretch the strings, mines the 2005 model but they used hardened steel or something on the 2006 model so that might make a difference)

He used to get Chandlers to make adjustments to get the Fender style trem to say in tune as well as could be.

eh, sorry but i don't think i'm going for the guitar. thinking about it i really don't want to sell either of my guitars. i'm thinking i could get it as a graduation present next year. i guess i can wait.

so this leaves me to a new problem. what do you guys think about my cab? is the 4x10 holding back my sound? or should i just buy a new pickup? i'm thinking warpig in the bridge of the V to go with the Miracle Man. what would be more worth it? new cab, new pickup?

hm... how about a 2x12... forgot about them. could get the best of both worlds without having to sell my old cab. i'm guessing the 2x12 would be somewhat cheap, right?

I bought an RR5 a while ago, i sent it back five minutes after it was delivered to my door, the build quality was absolute rubbish! The ivory one does look nicer though. I guess that experience has just given me a phobia of jacksons

i found a personal ad for what says a Crate Celestion 4x12 guitar cab for $150. is there a huge difference in sound between a crate and something better? i guess they could be terrible speakers, but they are celestions it says...
