Title: New Bridge Pickup
Post by: vrgnr08 on July 20, 2007, 12:39:20 AM
Hi Guys,
Recently the bridge pickup on my guitar has died and i need to find a new pickup. Im playing a LP that originally had Burstbucker 2 and 3's in it. The 3 died. Ive heard alot about bareknuckle pickups, and im looking into getting one. I play mostly Zeppelin, GNR, Aerosmith and other classic rock stuff, and i run through a Marshall JTM60 amp.  Any suggestions to hit that LIVE Zeppelin and Appetite for Destruction GNR tone? Also, do you guys think that these pickups are really worth $200 USD when i can go out and get another Burstbucker for $130 USD?

Thanks!

Hi, welcome to the forum.  I have a lot of BK pickups and that is because imho they are the best aftermarket pickups made.  In terms of the sound you are looking for, 2 pickups come to mind immediately, the Black Dog and the AII Mule.  The difference is Slash vs Jimmy Page.  The Black Dog is a more aggressive fat sound without leaving the PAF family.  The AV magnet gives some of that drive.  I have a set in one of my Les Pauls and it is really instant Jimmy Page.  The Alnico II Mule is the Slash pickup but with a lot more note definition and sensitivity compared to the SD AII pickup.  Liek all BK pickups, you can control the distortion and gain just by picking dynamics and when you lower the volume, the sound cleans up without losing any of the sparkle.  There is also an AIV mule which has a little tighter sound than the AII and would be another pickup to think about.   I know the exchange rate sucks at the moment (I just returned from a trip to Europe and am starting to get the cc bills!), but I really do think that BK's are worth it.

If you are in any doubt about BK pup's check out the reviews on Harmony Central. These things get 10/10 almost across the board, and from players with 20 years of professional experience.

Here is the review page that parted me with my money. (I bought Nailbombs, but it gives you an idea of what people are saying)

Just out of curiosity:
How do pickups "die"?

and:

Wouldn't this be covered by Gibson's warranty?

Old pickups never die, they just retire to a drawer in the spare room.
