So, which amps are you guys gassing for majorly?
For me it's the Zakk Wylde Marshall JCM800. I've only ever played through Tim's ZW Marshalls and everytime I've been blown away by it. I think it has the exact tone I've been looking for. Thinking of getting rid of my Powerball to get a JCM800 and put some 6550's in the power section.
Are there many techs that would put 6550's in a JCM800? or is it something that many techs don't do?
But apart from the JCM800 it's got to be the Mesa Mark IV 8)
-
What else is different about the ZW Marshall compared to a normal '800?
I have a 100w JCM800 atm if you're interested 8).
I dream of a Voodoo V-plex or some other high end boutique amp that is similar.
-
I'm gassing for Diezel Herbert/VH4/Einstein, Peavey 6505/5150, Engl Powerball/Fireball/Savage/Ritchie Blackmoore/Invader/SE, Framus Cobra/Dragon.
The list goes on :P
-
Hey noodle, I was talking to the guitarist from NATO today, he was borrowing some Diezel cabs cos he said they sounded awesome!!
-
After Hunter's clips. it's the Bogner Shiva for me. And maybe a Matamp GT1...
-
Orange Tiny Terror
ENGL Fireball/Powerball
Marshall 1959 SLP
Marshall Blues Breaker
Fender Twin
-
Cornell Plexi 7.
Just a nice simple little amp I can play in the house without distressing the neighbours.
-
Bogner xtc
Cornford MK50II
-
I'm after an early 80's jcm800 head :D then I think I will have it ZW ified
just don't know if i want to sell my jcm900 head aswell

I've had a JCM900, the 2100 model. The JCM800 sounds better in my opinion. More balls to it and nicer gain.
-
yup, 2100. I like the two master volumes really. is a good amp, and is great to be able to switch to triode.
maybe I shall run both in stereo 8)
-
Randall V2, nuff said, heh!
-
I'd like a Matamp. I've got major doom impulses at the moment and when I saw Boris recently they sounded incredible.
Really though, I was fortunate enough to get my amp choice right first time. It's meant I can concentrate on my guitar GAS without any distractions. :)
-
I recently bought the amp I'd been gassing for - Engl Savage  - pretty much stopped me gassing for amps.
However I'm sure I could be forced to buy a Hughes & Kettner Triamp MKII (the amp I drooled over before I got the Savage) :)
-
Another Splawn and something that sounds stellar clean.
-
For me it's got to be the new(ish) Cornford MK50H II, and a Marshall JCM 2555SL. But that's not to say I'm not stoked with my Orange Tiny Terror which is frankly the mutt's nuts as far as recording & jamming goes.

You ever heard the JCM Jubilee? I play one every monday for past two years and it kinda dissapoints compared to the 800 and Plexi's. I`d love the MK50II also, sweet amp!!
-
cornford hurricane... (or some of the others if I can get to try them)
splawn of some kind, i don't know if that counts, though, as i haven't been able to try one...
EDIT: oh all right, and a thd flexi 50, but i'd ideally like to try a bunch more of the less modern amps before i settled on that one.

Soldano SLO100
Cornford Mk50 II
Bogner Ecstasy
Mesa/Boogie Mark II C+
But im more than Happy with my Cornford Hurricane and wouldn't buy any of the above unless I was playing stadiums..
-
i'm really happy with my marshall jmp50 master volume. though i'd like some more $$ to do the rest of the changes to it i've been planning.
also i'd like a broadly similar sounding amp in the 5->15w range, possibly an orange tiny terror, although it would be nice to get an oldie.
-
Engl Powerball
Mesa Mark IV
Diezel VH4
Bogner Uberscahller
Rivera Knucklehead
But since I have no money or space for the above ill stick to my Engl Thunder Combo

-
Matamp 1224 Mk II, played one and loved it.
Matamp Series 2000, complete with reverb tank.
Still need to track down a second hand 6V6 Minimat (Mk1) as the factory have now switched production to the new Minimat MkII, and I want to get a matching 6V6 head to go with my El84 Mk1... :(
*Rahnooo*
-
Bogner: Bogner Ecstasy Classic (EL34's), Shiva (EL34's)
Diezel: Herbert, Einstein (EL34's)
Framus: Cobra, Dragon
Matamp: Little Rock, LX, 1224mkII, 1224mkV
ENGL: Invader 150, Savage 120, Richie B sig, Powerball, Fireball, Screamer 50 head
Matchless: The Independence, C-30
Hughes & Kettner: TriAmp MKII, Trilogy
-
I want a Matamp GT1.
Doooooooooooooooooom.
-
No real GAS but I would like a new amp within one year from now.
I'm pretty shure it's going to be a Fender again. Not shure wich one, though. The Super Sonic is mighty tempting.
-
ENGL Savage (I'd actually like to trade my Framus Cobra for one)
Fender Twin Reverb
Mojave Scorpion
that's my dream rig :P
-
I'm still stoked with my Koch Powertone II after two years, which gives me al the tones I need. Which is handy as I don't want to be gassing for amps as they're too big and I don't have room for more!
-
Are there many techs that would put 6550's in a JCM800? or is it something that many techs don't do?
tons of techs do it because thats what jimi hendrix had in his marshalls. He converted all of his amps to use 6550s (to match the tone of his old Sunn Model T's)
Gas list:
70's Sunn Model T (duh)
Matamp GT1
Soldano SLO-100
Ampeg V-4 (both master and non master volume versions)
Bad Cat Hot Cat
Orange Thunderverb
Laney Protube AOR 100

Was very impressed with the Wizard Modern Classic as demoed by Duane Todd (aka 'Treetopper' on youtube) - see my previous post:-
http://www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?p=107820&highlight=#107820.
BUT he has now switched to using an ELMWOOD MODENA - search on youtube for 'elmwood modena' and you'll find several clips by him of the M60 and M90. Definitely my favourite amp sound - but as not many people seemed to share my opinion on the Wizard, it's probably not everyone's taste. They are handmade in Sweden, no distributors in UK so not much chance of getting one here so will have to stick with my Cornford Hellcat which I still think is great.
P.S. for benefit of Mr Ed following his criticism of my comment on Duane Todd using Seymour Duncan pickups on the Wizard clip - he now has a BKP Rebel Yell in his Les Paul.
-
I'd like whatever Schenker used on SITN as its probably my favourite rock tone.. however I am still very pleased with my Laney which I've had since last November and dont really feel the need to change.. can get quite close to that kinda sound with the Laney, probably almost spot on with a load of tweaking with an eq in the loop.
Plexi or some kinda Voxy, nice chimey amp would be cool though. I dont like most indie bands, but I love a lot of the tones they get and they all seem to use teles into AC30s or Oranges..
-
To be honest my amp gas has almost gone..as I love my current amp....
.but if I had the room and no neighbours..and lots of cash original Sunn head(can't remember what model it was), a fender twin(for it's cleans), 70's hiwatt 50 head and 4x12 cab, have liked all the cornford stuff I tried..and most mesa boogies.
The fender and the hiwatt are as much nostalgia as sound as I used to own both

Trainwreck :)
I've heard clips of real Trainwreck amps that would reduce a grown man to tears - they really are something else those amps.

"Ok folks, this was a cool project today. Scott A. here on the forum contacted me and we did some recording with my "real" '89 Trainwreck Express (that I've owned since new, and recently featured on my new Instrumental CD) and his new Ceriatone (factory built by them) Express clone. I just emailed the clips to Scott, and he is going to host them and hopefully will post the links here shortly.
The short story is I was very impressed with the Ceriatone clone. The best clone I've heard to date. Yes the amps do sound different, but both sound like Wrecks to me. I can easily tell the two amps apart, however in some ways either amp has it's pros and cons. I find the "real" TW to be smoother and sweeter overall, as it's just plain warmer and more natural sounding to me. Still, there were some things I played that really came across great on the slightly more aggressive sounding clone. That said here are my pros and cons of the clone.
Ceriatone Express
PROS:
The amp cleans up very well. This is the best I've heard a clone do in this department, something that is A #1 with these amps IMHO. By the way if you don't work your guitar knobs, don't even bother with one of these amps.
The amp has a nice wide EQ range, and sounds BIG. For chunky rhythms this amp is punchy.
The knobs on the amp respond very much like the real deal.
The overall tone is very Wreck like, however it feels like it has a bit more "metal panel Marshall" in it to me than the real deal. Maybe more of a metal amp, than a rock amp?
CONS:
Is definitely louder than the real deal. 1-2 db or so, maybe 5-10 watts? Heck, even toned down with 6V6s the Ceriatone is louder than my TW Express w/EL34s. These amps are already loud, so I wouldn't say this is a good thing for most folks.
The high end is a bit harsh and bright when you get up the neck, though it is fine down low. Almost like it needs more compression up top. In contrast the TW stays smooth, sweet and fat on the highest notes. In some ways, the Ceriatone almost makes old speakers sound like new ones if you get what I'm saying. I think in the studio the real deal will still shine, but live maybe this may actually be just fine.
The transition from clean to distorted is a little more jagged than the real deal. Almost like there is more trash in the signal once the breakup starts. On a good note at least it's clear as a bell down low and really rips when cranked. Also, the "woman tone" thing is sweeter for sure on the real deal.
All that said, I was impressed and I've played the "real deal" for a long time.
End of my ramblings, here are the "specs" of the recordings. PLEASE pardon the playing on these, one take and not much thought...
The Les Paul was my original '59 standard, and the Strat my '92 Callaham. I ran two 20' cords (Mogami wire) in series, a "warm up" trick I almost always do with Wrecks. The amps were both set pretty similarly, volumes around 1:00, and the other knobs around 1/2. I tweaked the knobs a little from that point so the amps sounded as close as each other as I could. Both amps had bright switches set in the full bright positions. We used the same tubes swapped from amp to amp, and the bias of the two amps were very close to the same. Old Sylvania 12AX7s, and new GT Mullard repro EL34s. Ran the amps into two '68 Marshall basket weave cabs. Slant is panned full LEFT and has old 25s. A straight cab is panned full RIGHT and has 3x25s, but one original 30 watter. On that cab I miked the lone 30. Both cabs miked with Sennheiser E906 mics, into API mic pres. A little reverb and delay added in post, however no EQ or compression was used. I didn't do any sustained feedback as we were tracking this from a separate room from the cabs. Wrecks really shine in this department, but the focus on these clips were on the tone not the feedback control. My bet is the Ceriatone will do fine for this, though the added high end zing may make it slightly trickier to tame?
I'm pretty excited there is a way to get close to this tone "on the cheap", and you don't even need to build it. I'd like to get one, and tweak it further to see what it can really do.
Ken Fischer's designs really were way ahead of their time, and the clones wouldn't exist if he hadn't paved the way. I still however hope Nick has dropped the logo deal, and in some ways I don't really think Ken ever wanted folks to clone his amps for money though no matter what somebody will do it. However, I bet Ken would still be happy to know his designs are out there making music and not totally left in the vaults as collectibles.
Hope Scott gets the clips up soon. Enjoy!
Glen"
The 'Liverpool' is maybe abit closer than the 'Express'.

Are there many techs that would put 6550's in a JCM800? or is it something that many techs don't do?
I've put both 6550s and KT88s in JCM800s, it's a fairly popular mod. I prefer 800s with 6550s rather than EL34s if you're doing metal.

Laboga Mr Hector

Brunetti Pirata 141
EVH 5150 III

Laney GH50L
the list goes on... im probably going to sell my tiny terror to finance either a 5150 or a Laney GH50L... we'll see
-
Not that many amps I want now. Rather I need to get rid of some as all I play is my VH100R.
If I was getting an amp I'd want
Ceriatone 2204, 1987 or the 18W
Matamp Little Rock
Laney Protube AOR50
-
I'd love an Engl Powerball, and considering a 5150 at the moment.
I'll probably end up getting a JCM800 though, will have to try em out and see what I like the best.

AOR30 and JCM800 2205. All my amps do the hot rodded Marshall thing and I like the VH the best. I'm still not sure about selling though they all sound different and I know I will regret it!

You sold the SuperBass????? :o
nah, I've still got the '76 Superbass - was playing through it earlier on, sounds great.
I used to have a real-deal '67 plexi and it sounded SO good it just made you want to cry. Unfortunately, at the time of selling I was in a bad financial state and I got an offer too good to knock back.
-
I'm in the mood for a '65 Twin Reverb right about now.
-
I'd agree with the above, a nice '65 Twin would do me nicely.
-
Twins are gorgeous, but LOUD. You can get most of that tone at a lower volume with a Pro Reverb or (even better) a Deluxe Reverb.
-
I'm considering upgrading to an ENGL Screamer.
Really I'm just after a smaller valve head with channel switching and no blurring of notes when I play fast.
My current amp is an Indie IT-70 which is like a cheaper Marshall AVT and gives a nice, if indistinct, sound.
