Has anyone else seen this?

At first I thought Gibson's guitar of the week thing would be cool... and then it seemed like the only thing they did was switch out paint jobs and woods and pick guards. Nothing too exciting.
This is nuts.
Thoughts?
-
I think it needs some cutaways for upper fret access
-
I love Vs, and they've had some beautiful Guitars of the Week, but that is hideous.
(EDIT: Actually, it's quite annoying that, apart from the shape and the body wood, that thing is built pretty much to '58 V specs - yet they only offer a '58 V reissue through the Custom Shop. :( )
I do, however, badly want one of these:

HAahhahahahahahahahahahaha
lmao
That is BRILLIANT.
hahahahahahaha.
When I loaded up the thread I was thinking - A V flipped would look identical - What's the point.
Then I saw the pic of it flipped VERTICALLY xD xD xD xD
-
put that in a guitar stand...
-
put that in a guitar stand...
If you put a metal spike on the end you could just stab it into the floor
-
anyone want a new mouse cursor? :D

-
brilliant doog. what, were you looking at your screen upside down to notice that?
-
I had that idea a few years back, then decided it was just a bit silly. Nowhere to rest your arm, weird balance, dodgy upper fret access... On the other hand, if it had a stealth fighter graphic finish then I'd have one.
-

EDIT: doog, you are my new hero
-
pretty sure I have seen an image like that before. is kinda weird
atleast they have got a sidmounted input.
anyone fancy making that into a cursor :?:
I know I would use it ;)
whats the price on the guitar though
-
I'm trying, and failing, to get any sort of mental picture of how that would balance on a strap. I think it's amazing how Gibson has such a total dedication to pursuing the stupidest ideas imaginable.
Not content with having spent years trying to hype their "digital guitar" system, they come up with something that looks like a six-stringed insult - to themselves! If any other company made a guitar that looked like that Gibson would have taken offence and started a gangsta-rap-style turf war. There would be drive-by shootings.
-
Yeah, when I first read 52 new guitars... I thought actual new models, not just cr@p mix and matches and paint jobs.
-
Saw it on the Foo board. I hate it. I hate it SO much.
-
i think we all know where we've seen a V like that before:

Breakin' the law, breakin' the law

That is just horrible - what are the guys at Gibson smoking these days?
Andy!

I guess it needs some painkillers in it then.
I was looking at the firebirds in that series, they all look really cheap :(
THey even get the specs wrong on one of them (compared with the photos anyway)
-
Reminds me of those strats with the neck on the wrong end. I can't remember the name anymore.
Anyway, that V looks hideous.

I noticed that too -
http://www.gibson.com/en%2Dus/Divisions/Gibson%20USA/Guitars/Flying%20V/V%2DFactor%20New%20Century/
Is that really an ebony fretboard?

In the main picture it looks doubtful, but the additional pics it could be ebony, but they may have over lightened the image in photoshop (you also get similar lightening when you switch between CRT & LCD displays when working on images)
Heres the firebird I was bitching about, apart from making it look like something that a fecking rapper would own are those full sized humbuckers I see before me ? http://www.gibson.com/en-us/Divisions/Gibson%20USA/Guitar%20of%20the%20Week/Firebird%20Studio/
Nope theyre not, si I wonder what gibson will get around to attaching when the build them !
-

oh lighten up

They're minibuckers in the pic but the specs list 498T/490R - and also it says the tuners are mini Grovers but in the pic they look like banjo tuners :? . But surely no-one's going to buy one anyway. Only Gibson could be misguided enough to take a beautiful guitar like a Firebird and build a variation that bloody ugly.
Not keen on full-size HBs in a Firebird then Rob? When you said you were GASing for one I thought I might be able to flog you my Firebird Studio.
-
i could go for the maple wings and mahogany neck through if they had done it with a nice sunburst like a firebird should really have. Other that that it would have looked better with a laminated neck thru section - make it stripey!!!!
-
I'm afaraid I'm totally in love with minibuckers, and the thicker section.
Not that theres anything wrong with the studio model (I prefer the conventional tuners) but I thought that they did such a wonderful job with the original (though I do quite like the non reverse firebirds)
I have to agree with you Wes, a nice finish on the guitar would have worked wonders for it.
Hmmm Phillu you have me thinking about Firebird studios now (damn you)
-
just noticed it is laminated - but they havnt exactly got the colours of woods complimenting each other. I would have gone for a 5 peice necck thru with a 1/2" mahogany laminate in the middle with 1/4" of wenge either side then 1" of maple either side of that with a thin black veneer between the centre section and the wings. It would have avoided that raw maple with a big chunk of raw mahogany look that ruins this guitar. I also would have done it with mahogany wings capped with maple to keep the tone usable....
i really like firebirds - havnt made one in a few years though, my first ever commision was one!!
-
I want one of these http://www.gibson.com/en%2Dus/Divisions/Gibson%20USA/Guitar%20of%20the%20Week/LP%20Classic%20Custom%20Silverburst/
but not gibson :)
-

I like 'em too, especially as neck pickups. I bought a pair a couple of weeks ago, just because they were quite cheap. Not sure what I'll do with them, but I have a few ideas.
-
my local guitar store does that to stratocasters. All be it cheap Jim Decan copies.
That V is cool I think, only because its so out ot the norm

Well you have to put one in the neck position of a tele (though PAFs work well too)

I have one in the neck on my 59 Esquire, with a Brown Sugar bridge, it is a great combination. I also have one in the neck of a superstrat with MQ/Slowhand, it is a bit overpowered there though.
I have a firebird and really don't like the things Gibson are doing to the guitars nowadays. There is another with Zebrawood topped wings - really horrible! Like you say Wez, sunburst looks best (though I like white firebirds too!).
I have a Thunderbird bass too - they are really the most amazingly solid bass sound around, though they have the most delicate headstock! Mine has had a neck repair but it still sounds great.
-
white firebirds...
this was my 3rd or 4th guitar;
probably one of the coolest looking things i have made!! Shame it wasnt one of the best playing!!

Although flash looking I like Phil Manzaneras red firebird, the non reverse ones for some reason look real good in white.
Hmmm I really like the Fender Blonde finish (the Mary Ford strat being an example), now a firebird in that finish (as well as a Tele with mini Humbuckers with that finish too Hmmmm)
Wez: It cerainly looks nice, still the next one it ill be better :)
I am beginning to think that Gibson are relying almost purely on 'bling' as if they are trying to arm the urban youth with their instruments, and thats not good.
-
yeah, i wouldnt mind doing one of these again now i know i can do it justice. I dont think gibson have ever done a firebird junior but i reckon its pretty cool
-
I'd love a firebird - in white
-

The Firebird I was a sort of Firebird Jr, but yours is cool too!

Depends on what you mean by a Jr version as Clapton used the firebird 1 for the last Cream gig (single pickup and wrapover tailpiece) theres one here http://www.guitargonauts.com/pick-36.html
I'd personally love one of these, except for the banjo tuners, and perhaps a through neck ?
Thinking about it this is the only one I have seen a decent picture of.
-
yeah the firebird 1 is pretty much a jnr but is constructed the same way as a normal firebird with less hardware - it still pretty much looks like a normal firebird
-
I had a custom shop firebird 1 & 7, but sold them to get my original firebird 3. The big difference with the first custom shop guitars was they all used a tune-o-matic with a stop. I'm just debating whether to put the lyre vibrola that I have onto the firebird. It is an original 60's long tailpiece lyre, and there are only 2 guitars I think that they really look good on, one is the SG Custom, and the other the firebird. However the 5 had the lyre not the 3, it had the maestro (short) vibrola.
I think the firebirds have a great sound because of the mini-hb and neck through. They are sort of like a strat on steroids with no hum. BK used to make the mini-mule hb but I think they don't any more (though I have one!). I know a lot of people aren't that keen on the sound which is why so many LP Deluxes have full size hb's.

even worse!

Dunno if this has been covered yet but has anyone seen that monstrosity that Zakk Wylde has been playing of late? How can anyone think that shape is cool?
-
^I like it
-
when i first saw those new dean guitars it was from a very arty angle and i thought it looked like a really cool idea, if not something i would choose.
but look at it from straight on:
http://www.deanguitars.com/dean_winter_07/splittail_en.htm
that looks like bad and lazy design to me!!
-
Yeah that's what I thought. Someone at dean has gone "Hmmm, can't be arsed today, lets take a Rhodes V and an SG, cut 'em both in half at the waist and glue them together, job done!"
Very lazy. :P
Lol Kepu, well Zakk likes it so at least you got a heavyweight on your side. :D
If they had put literally 10 more seconds of thought into it (like I just did on photoshop, hehe) they would have come out with something that is 10 times cooler. I think it's the SG's curves that irritate me, they're just 2 completely different shapes and I don't think they go all that well together.
At least my version has a slightly original design to it, hehe.
-
Zakk used one of those made by Gibson on the Jonathan Ross show. That looked alot better than the Dean.
-
I thought it was an LP...
-
