Title: Who's got an Edwards?

Look what i just ordered!
It's the second most beautiful LP style guitar I've ever seen! (the first being that turquoise Feline lion)

I've only ever heard good GOOD things about Edwards guitars, and they look so delicious; I'm really appealing for another side to the arguement that Edwards guitars are incredible, and better than (m)any of their USA counterparts.
I also want to ask for details on the Laquer Taste series (which my guitar is from). Is it a nitro finish, a thin poly finish, or a nitro over a poly? what's going on?
This guitar is undoubtably getting Zebra mules, leaving my Greco custom styled LP open for crawlers or black dogs. :D
I'm so excited - should be here in a week or two!

Well done Indy
We have a rather nice Edwards black LP Custom in for set-up
Seems pretty nice, if a bit on the light side
Will tell you what she's like once we have done our magic on her

I think the laquer taste is a nitro top with a poly back and sides (I may be completely wrong, I've not heard of nitro on poly but this may also be a possibility).
I'd have raw nickel covers though, they'd look awesome with that finish.

Oh by the way, I've seen plenty of those in the shops and they are really gorgeous. Excellent purchase!!

this one's 8.37lbs, which seems kinda medium-light; I think that's a pretty good weight for a guitar to be, lol. I've heard lighter mahogany sounds better because it's from the top of the tree and is less compressed or something, is there any truth in that?
It'll be a stark contrast to my 11lb MONSTER greco.

raw nickel's an option too...or zebra in bridge, with raw nickel in neck...

just as likely to be different trees and even different species of mahogany that are making it lighter.  its all just natural variation!!

Thats what makes hand selection of guitar woods quite important to me.  If its too heavy it can be lightened with chambering but if its to light (quite rare with mahogany) there are less options for making it heavier without purposely adding weights

the Lp looks nice!!

Whatever mahogany it is that Edwards use, it always seems to be very lightweight.

I don't have an LP type, but my two Edwards Vs are so lightweight I almost wondered if they were made of balsa.  They're good and resonant though.

Re the finishes, I'm not sure but I think Gingataff's right that they only have nitro on the tops.  And re nitro-on-poly, I was reading on a relic-ing site the other day that Fender's US vintage reissue (and possibly also Highway 1) guitars are nitro topcoats over some kind of poly.

Yeah but I have two and I have other guitars in my sights at the moment-having said that, I was playing a nice 1966 Fender Precision yesterday and the old credit card was a fluttering in my wallet.

that does look nice - i keep saying i will do another explorer but havnt gotten around to it yet.

Not sure if its just my monitor - but the black looks a bit patchy around the arm rest area.  ruins a nice simple looking guitar for me

Well remembered!  :D

It's very bloody great thanks, with possibly the nicest neck profile of all my guitars (quite similar to a Gibson 59 rounded shape, I think).  The only thing I'm not crazy about is the 2 vol, 2 tone arrangement, but it is meant to be a V-shaped Les Paul to all intents and purposes.

I need to replace the Duncans with BKPs though.

Yeah that's one, the same as davey's and WFD's, although it's been modded.
The one you're looking at is the deluxe model, there's also the custom which is H-S-S (or H-h-h if you want to be picky) which might be worth looking for if you want a middle pickup.  Anyway, back to thread...

Well, it's not here, and I've recieved no letters asking for customs charges...
Parcelforce reckon nothing's gone wrong, but the thing's been in the country for over a week now and it doesn't seem to be moving (I track it and it says "INTERNATIONAL HUB" whatever that means.)
Kind of annoying, especially as i'm going to uni soon, and i really wanted to take her with me. Parcelforce seem to be able to f*ck EVERYTHING up

I wouldn't worry too much - once you get the letter from Parcelforce, if you pay the charges online by credit or debit card they can usually deliver next day.  When do you go to Uni?

Nah, only my third!   It's one of these, a not-very-accurate copy of Jeff Beck's customised 1954 "oxblood" Les Paul.  I like the weird purple colour and wraparound bridge, and apparently it has a huge fat neck:

Title: Who's got an Edwards?
Post by: Philly Q on September 02, 2007, 12:21:36 AM
Beck's guitar started out as a goldtop with P-90s, hence the wraparound.  I like guitars to be as simple as possible! (Although I may replace the bridge with an adjustable one if the intonation's too dodgy.  We'll see.)

I ordered from a chap called Hisashi on eBay.  He seems to have a similar operation to Katana, lots of cool stuff like Edwards, Tokai, Bacchus and ObG:

Probably not, but for the cost of that '68 Custom you could buy a couple of nice Japanese guitars, take a holiday and get the kitchen and/or bathroom refitted.  It's all a matter of priorities.

The letter asking for details of purchase has finally arrived, but after an entire month of being on holiday in various places, i have ran out of money, as i havent been working at all. Also - i don't even get my allowance this month since my dad ordered me a black Apple Macbook (SWEET- 2.16ghz dual core, 2GB RAM, 160GB HD).
I guess I'll have to leave it a few days and work hard before i can send off and get the guitar delivered
I don't think it'll be here before i go to Uni though which sucks a bit. I guess i'll come home at the weekend and pick her up. ->expect a "what amp for uni?" thread soon enough.

Great for you. I was thinking about getting one, but then I'd also have to pay 299 EUR to convert my Logic from Motorola to Intel as I am running on Logic 7.1.1. and missed the 49 EUR upgrade phase .. this is $%"^"&* stupid! These things make me really hate APple.

man that really sucks! Some aspects of Apple as a company make you wonder why everyone hasn't converted already, but then you hear the occasional horror story that makes you wander what they were thinking.
I'm really kinda hoping that i can pick up a copy of Logic on the cheap from Uni when i go; I'm doing a Sound Engineering and Production course at Birmingham TIC, and it looks like we're going to be using a lot of it. Hopefully things like that will be subsidised.

Hi guys, Just letting you know it's here! - I don't have any pictures yet. Haven't had time - only played it for about 5 mins, but first impressions are that it has a very nice neck, nicely built, fantastic weight for a les paul, and very resonant indeed. The neck sh-1 '59 seems alright in this guitar - giving nice bluesy sounds, but I'm a little disappointed with the sh-4 JB in the bridge - which seems quite fizzy and although high output, somehow thin when compared to the neck pup. I'm definately thinking of mules if and when i can afford them.

P.S. I'm typing this on my new Macbook, which came today!!! (AWESOME - totally impressed, not a bad word to say about it)

P.S.S. Forgot t say - it's the most beautiful guitar I've EVER seen. I can't believe i actually own it. Honest t god I've spent more time looking at it than playing it so far. Hopefully that will all change soon though ;)

Mine arrived this morning!

Agree with Indy about the Duncans, the 59n sounds surprisingly OK in an LP (better than in my Edwards Vs) but the JB is kind of nasty (and not in a good way).  They won't be staying long anyway.

After all we've said in various threads about the lightweight mahogany Edwards seem to have access to, I weighed this guitar - 8lbs 5.4oz!  How's that for a Les Paul?  :)

sweet guitar, philly, and i assume yours is nice too indy!

I'm in the process of ordering the lacquer taste LP standard. Finally decided which to go for. :D

And I agree about the JB. whoever decided to put that in a LP shouldn't be deciding which pickups go in which guitars, basically (though probably it's a question of costs, they can probably buy 6 billion JB's cheaper than if they buy loads of different models or something like that)...

I think they're just providing a pickup combination that's seen as some kind of "industry standard", rather than trying to find the "right" pickup for each guitar.  And to be fair, to get genuine Duncans (like 'em or not) in Edwards' price range is a pretty good deal.  And I'm sure you're right, they probably benefit from bulk buying too.

Incidentally, they do sometimes use different Duncans for different guitars - my sunburst V has an SH-14 Custom 5 (bit better than the JB, IMO), the 335-types have a Jazz/Custom 5 combo, the Page LP has a Custom and the reliced Jeff Beck Tele even has a "custom shop JB prototype", apparently.  Edwards are pretty big on attention to detail!

Sorry, I'm starting to sound like an Edwards sales rep.  I do love these guitars!

(I'm going to have a few Duncans to flog on eBay when all my Edwards are BKP'ed!  :) )

:D As it goes i agree the SH5 is the best sounding Duncan i`ve heard     [ Custom ] But still not a patch on anything in the BK range all though the nearest BK in terms of spec to a Duncan Custom/SH5 is a "Cold Sweat" which to be honest sounds alot better to me at least anyways.

I'm almost certainly going to get a set of Crawlers for this guitar, but I would like to try the Cold Sweats sometime.

yep i know what you mean. it's actually quite ironic that the superstrats have different pickups... you could do worse than a jb in a superstrat, but in a LP, eh, i'll pass. I guess you're right, they sound like they've put more thought into it than a lot of other companies (even ESP, lol), just a shame they didn't put more thought into the models I'm looking at...

I'm gonna whack my duncans into my musicyo kramer when i get round to upgrading to BKP's... though knowing me that'll take a while...

EDIT: i guess my biggest complaint with duncans and the like is that they're, a lot of the time, aimed at one tone with no thought put towards how it'll do other tones, perhaps with the exception of the '59 (and i'd still prefer a BKP or similar).

Nice guitar Phil.  You'll have to give us a "Blow by Blow" account of how it sounds BKP'd...

Ouch!  :x

If only I could play like that, although, to be honest, I've never been the biggest Jeff Beck fan.

Could be a wee while before I change the pickups, unless I manage to sell some stuff soon.

Lovely colour, nice and vintage-looking!  :D

Have the Duncan stickers left marks on the pickup covers?

yeah. ikebi was slightly cheaper, but i knew i could get an answer reasonably quickly from ishi if anything went wrong etc., and they'd given me a lot of help so far, so i just stuck with them.

Did yours come yet dave?
I really need to get mules for this baby. Like realy painfully badly. The JB is just the worst and buzziest pickup in the world - it really destroys the tone of the guitar in the bridge position (which shines through quite nicely on the neck pickup - SD'59, which is tolerable). I can't see why Edwards would have put this combination of pickups in; true, it is pretty much the industry standard, but this is clearly a vintage-styled guitar, and the people buying it are clearly going to want vintage voiced buckers. I can't afford new pickups nowadays. i can barely afford food. I don't really know what to do...
UNLESS anyone wants to trade me a SD Pearly Gates, or '59, or just ANY OTHER PICKUP for this JB?
Title: Who's got an Edwards?
Post by: dave_mc on October 19, 2007, 03:15:05 PM
yeah, mine came about 2 or 3 weeks ago. Really nice. :D

I agree about the JB, though I don't think it's just as bad as you say it is... it is usable, it just kinda makes everything sound "hard rock", almost nomatter the gain level. And it's a bit thin (and muddy at the same time). EDIT: but yeah, you do kinda get the feeling that it's just the "wrong" pickup for the style of guitar. though granted it does seem to sound better in the edwards than in most other guitars I've tried it in.

But I'm in no rush to swap (laziness/funds I'd rather spend on another edwards rather than a pickup swap... I'm paranoid, especially with all the rumours flying around, that ishibashi will stop shipping them outside japan- i can always get pickups later!)

Where did you hear that Dave?  I'll have to start stockpiling now!!!
Title: Who's got an Edwards?
Post by: dave_mc on October 19, 2007, 09:32:27 PM
someone on HC claimed that ikebe would no longer ship either overseas or to the USA (since he was in the USA, it's hard to know which it is...)

Bear in mind that's total hearsay from harmony central, and I have no idea as to the veracity of it.

I'm considering stockpiling myself... working on the basis that i'd rather buy an edwards or two at £400-£500 now, even if I did just buy a new guitar, rather than perhaps have to pay more that double that for something available in the UK, if they do decide to stop shipping.

EDIT: http://acapella.harmony-central.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1739101&page=5 post #89

took me a while to find that...

Cheers, Dave.  :)

Oh well, if it happens it happens I suppose.  I've probably got all the Edwards I'll ever need.  I wouldn't mind a TV Yellow LP Special, and I wish I'd bought one of the bound, maple-topped Explorers (similar to my sunburst V), but they seem to have been discontinued anyway.

I don't, haha, at last count there are about 7 or 8 i wouldn't mind. and those are just the ones I "need".

Sometimes that katana dude has those sunburst ones... i know he had the sunburst v a while back. might be worth keeping an eye on, anyway...

i know its not an edwards but was just wondering if anyone was interested in my ESP ECLIPSE 1 CTM - VINTAGE WHITE

I bought it for 1300 in June. They are still retailing at 1200. I am desperate for the money so it will go for the bargain price of £850!!

hurley, there is a reason this forum has a section for classified ads and there is a reason you have to get permission to be able to post in it.

It stops this forum becoming like all the others where half of all the threads are people trying to shift stuff they dont want.  Thats something i am quite gratefull for as i feel it is one of the things that keeps this forum a civilised place

I suggest you click on usergroups at the top of the page and request membership of the seconds out group.  Your post count is over 50 so they should approve it within a few days. Then you will be able to advertise your ESP in the correct place, the price you are asking is certainly good!!

Daddy like... Shame I have no money. An eclipse is on my list of 'grown' up guitars, i.e. one I'll buy when I start working as a teacher. Either that, a proper Les Paul or a PRS thingy, possibly a custom build. What's the scale length on those ESPs?
