Hey everyone I just recently discovered BKP's and have been listening to a ton of sound clips on the forums. I play a PRS Custom 22 (6lbs 15 ounces) and I love how the guitar plays, just not the pickups in it. I play modern rock through a Mesa Dual Recto along the lines of Tool, A Perfect Circle, etc.
Getting to the point, I'm looking for a punch in your face rock tone and it seems like the Rebel Yell is where its at after listening to clips. Anyone have any thoughts on what it might sound like in a Cu22 or if there are other pups that may sound better? Thanks!
oh heres the band I play in if it gives you an idea of what kind of music I play:

tool/apc = holy diver
not so different from rebel yell, but meatier and more modern sounding
-
Awesome man thanks. I'm going to look into some clips of that. Is that the type of music you play?
-
I know I'm a newbie here and I dont mean to double post but I'm curious to know what you think what other type of bands you think the Holy Diver sounds like. Any thoughts?
-
depends on you, your amp and your guitar
i can't think of a specific style's tone (that uses humbucker) that i couldn't get
you can get anyhing from randy rhoads, old metallica, alice in chains to trivium or arch enemy's tones
it's a very balanced and dynamic pickup
sounds warm if you pick it softly, but powerful if you play hard
the cleans are great without needing to roll off the knobs

I have rebel yells in a PRS Standard 24 and really like the sound. They are a punchy pickup becuase they have a strong mid range. The holy diver has a bit less mid and a bit more bass. I just changed my PRS Artist 22 to A4 Mules, which I am really liking, but obviously this is really a PAF sound. I did have VHII's in it before, but I am finding the Mules suit the sounds I like more (classic rock and blues).

Yeah, it seems like its one of those things I'd love to try out cause just like everyone else here I'm really particular about my sound. I like the punchyness of the Rebel Yell from what I've heard, but there arent many good clips of the Holy Diver I can find. From what I've heard it doesn't sound as hot as the Rebel Yell, but if from what Eric is saying HD is right up my alley for Tool and APC like thick tone.

PhilKing, what type/genre of music do you play and what amp(s) do you play through? Also, what does "PAF" mean? Sorry, I'm a n00b to some of the terminology. Thanks

when seth lover invented the humbucking idea, gibson applied for a patent, but it wasn't accepted for a few years or something like that, so it had PATENT APPLIED FOR stamped on the bottom, now known as PAF
generally means early humbucker type sound

Thanks Will

should probably also point out that they are the lower output ones too.
although you probably noticed by now
-
Yeah I did noticed that. I listened to a few more HD clips. It does sound meatier and thicker than the RY and I like that. I'm just worried about output I guess. Basically if its its going to crunch as well as the RY.

actually it's hotter than the RY, just have a bit less upper mids and more low mids and punch
i think rebel yell was supposed to be the holy diver, but it became steve stevens signature, so tim made another holy diver with more chunk
it's hard to judge just by forumites clips cause most of us don't have resources to capture the pure nature of a pickup, especially with pc mics and digital direct recording (which takes all the dynamics out)

I have Rebel Yells in the PRS and Holy Diver in a Warmoth superstrat with 2 Trilogy suites. The Rebel Yell is a brighter pickup and loves to give harmonic feedback. They both have a similar output, but the HD is more of an 80's style sound with a thicker tone. In a PRS with a 5-way, the parallel sounds (2 & 4), are almost Fender like in the clarity. Not having tried the HD in a PRS, I can't tell you what the sound would be like in there.
I play almost all blues and classic rock, with some heavier Zepplin and Black Sabbath, but not really any metal. I am in the lucky situation of having a lot of guitars with BK pickups, so I can select the sound I want in a guitar. My guitars are either strung 11-50 or 10-46 depending on the scale length.
I have several custom made recording amps, but my main higher power amp is a Marshall Silver Jubilee with an Ear Candy 1x12 extension cab. Both the combo and cab are fitted with Celestion Sidewinder speakers.
If you are wanting a thicker tone, depending how hard you play, the VHII is very good. It has a great bottom end and very nice lead tones. TO uses one for metal and they work really well in a PRS. I took mine out because I wanted a more classic sound in a PRS (my others have MM set, Crawler/P-90 and RY).
One thing to remeber is to tell BK that the pickups are going into a PRS, they build them with shorter legs and reverse the front pickup magnet to give the correct HB orientation with the 5-way settings.

Since I'm looking for that thick meaty tone and from what everyone says about the Holy Diver it sounds like thats the one I'm going to purchasing here really soon. I just have to decide whether I want a set or just the bridge pup. Anything I should know about buying one for a PRS dimensions or anything along those lines?
-
Although PRS fit 50mm pickups as standard the bridge pickup really wants to be wide spacxed to line up better with the strings. Also if your PRS uses the 5 way rotary tone knob the magnet in the neck p/up needs to be flipped which si something we can do for you so long as we know.
-
If i just order the bridge pickup can it be used in either a 5 way selector or a 3 way toggle (singlecut les paul style) setup as well? I'm just wondering cause I'm not sure 100% positive which guitar I'm going to throw it in yet. Either my SC250 or the Custom 22, I can't decide whether I like the SC250 pickups yet or not.
Also, if I dont order a set (bridge and neck) and just order the bridge pickup now and the neck pickup later, will it affect the calibration between the 2 pickups cause theyre not a "calibrated set"?
-
If you get the flipped magnet it can be used in either configuration. It is the split sounds on the 5-way that need this, but the using a toggle will work fine. If you but then separately, then you will just need to ask for a flipped magnet when you buy the neck pickup.
