Noodleplungerine started a thread about amps for him.
I want to ask about the same question with a couple of changes.
1. Please could you post links to sound clips of the amps you recommend.
2. I am unable to spend over £500 (I'll give you a £200 tolerance).
My favourite bands are:
Dream Theater
The Mars Volta
Steve Vai's bands
Gary Moore (still got the blues)
Joe Satriani's bands
Yngwie Malmsteen
Rush
Fromuz
G'n'Rs
etc.
I like a heavy rhythm sound cleaning up to a crunch, a more 'voxey' (jazzy?) clean sound and a lead sound that allows me to play as fast as i feel like but still holds up when playing slower melodic lines.
I am not bothered about channel switching (too many buttons too close together and my (British) size 12s can't cope) and I am happy to buy a boost pedal if need be to smooth out the leads and increase sustain.
Chances are it's a bit of a tall order but someone here should be able to help surely...

Engl Thunder - Superb amp if you're not after metal tones.
I almost bought one earlier today...
-
I forgot to mention bands like King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Freak Kitchen/Mattias Eklundh and Neil Brockelbank...
My tastes do extend to metal but not to bands which spend long times in dropped tunings and thrash metal - which is too American oriented for my liking. I do enjoy the odd chug on my guitar now and again though...
Oh and the odd bit of Jerry Reed style bluegrass licks for when I don't want to be depressed  .

maybe a Marshall and a boost?
-
Is this for home use/recording or gigging?
If it's for home use, I'd suggest:
Orange Tiny Terror - £300
Harley Benton 2x12 - £90
Two Celestion G12H30 speakers - £80
Danelectro Fish 'N' Chips EQ pedal - £20
That leaves £10 to go towards a Tubescreamer.
:D

+1, or a Laney GH if you want a bit of a thicker, more lower middy tone, which I'm guessing might make the Dream Theater tones a bit easier to get, especially if you got 6L6 valves for the Laney.

My motivation was to have an amp I could use in my bedroom but which could just as well be used for live shows and recording.
Ideally I want something portable so that I could take it to school and back without effort.
The TT with the boost and EQ would probably be the best bet so far as it has a Mesa/Boogie style sound when pushed and is small enough and inconspicuous enough to avoid risk of theft.
Does anyone know of a mod to give the TT an FX loop so I can put a noise gate in there as from what I have heard it can be quite noisy.
-
laney tt combo? it's a struggle at that price, but that'd probably be my first port of call for those tones. i'd need to try it again to refresh my memory, though, it's a long while since I tried one.
i assume by "£200 tolerance" you mean you can go £200 over the £500?

Yeah but I'd have to save for longer...
-
Do it right or not at all.
-
yes but I need cash left over for other gear and maybe some driving lessons next year.
-
TT Combos are like £900 last time I checked =/

It's not noisy at all. You won't need an FX loop for a noise gate.

Ive got one and its awesome and imo it can do metal on its own but especially with an eq pedal although if you needed uder high-gain stuff (which you dont really) you could always boost it.
I got mine for £475 new from PMT in northampton an absolutely brilliant amp

well, def. mesa for dream t....the secret of his tone is the stable of early 80's mk IIC+ amps he has, acc. to many-I have a C+ and a Mk IV,which is darn close, and much less$$...but it seems mesa's are very $$ across the pond..but a MK IV can get you those tones(3 channels...)..basically the stuff I play-when paired with BK's it is tonal heaven!!
good luck

Yes but it also helps with modulation pedals such as chorus.

are they? last time i checked they were about £670...
sorry about that, carry on!
-
Perhaps I could look for a second hand head. Ideally I'm after a head so that I can carry it about more easily than a combo.
I can trade in my old amp towards a cab so the Harley Benton retrofit seems to be a good idea.
Oh and Shaman stop rubbing it in. the UK is a total rip off.
I really am annoyed by the fact that Laney, Orange and Marshall actually sell their gear much cheaper in the US. Logically it should be the opposite.
MESA are really overpriced for what they are - I could get an ENGL for far cheaper.
-
would it be sensible to buy two Tiny Terrors and set one for clean and one for distortion. I could use the pedal (Danelectro wasabi 'Rock-a-Bye') I use on my current amp to boost it's sustain and lead sound.
I could go for a larger Harley Benton and set it to stereo so that half the speakers did cleans and half did distortion.
-
I know this is a triple post but I just found an amp called the Carvin V3.
It's about my price range and seems the dog's bollocks from what I can hear. Has anyone had experience with carvin heads and shipping them to the UK (they claim to have free shipping on their website).
I'm also tempted by the fact that the legacy is cheaper but since it's a sig amp I'd shy away from it really.
-
Remember to add 20% on anything you buy from the states.
Custom's a bitch.
-
i'd have thought that free shipping was only to the states. also as noodle says you'll be charged customs, most likely on the postage too.
-
The feckers.
I need to find out if anyone in the UK stocks them online.
