I have a custom 5 (alnico5 version) and dig it. Huge, wide open tone and good low end. Hit a chord and it is massive. But on high notes it loses juice needed for a leads.
Don't want a JB because I find them flabby and too lose in my LPs. (lead tone is good though). so I gues I am ooking for a hotter alnico5 version of the custom 5. Was considering Doug aldrich pups but haven't heard them. Cermaics are too compressed and not big enough sounding.

I asked the same question a while ago. We didn't really come up with a definitive answer, and went off on the usual tangents, but Rebel Yell might do the trick.
Here's the thread:

What guitar do you have the Custom 5 in?

I like your answer ha! It is in a LP custom.

i think custom 5 sounds too scooped (the gibson 498t too)
i had a duncan custom loaded with alnico 8 (really middy, bassy and strong, but gets a bit muddy sometimes)
maybe you want a crawler
or a holy diver if you want fuller midrange
or even an alnico version of cold sweat
but the closest to doug aldrich pickups description is the nailbomb

Rebel Yell-DC14.45K Alnico V!

Rebel Yell-DC14.45K Alnico V!
And there's your answer. :D
As mentioned on that other thread that's now been resurrected, I had a feeling the RY would do the job but I already have one in another guitar so I wanted something different.
Compared with the Custom 5, I'd say the RY sounds bigger, with more punch and definition, plenty of clarity but not at all thin or screechy on the high notes.

but... i think he wants something similar
custom 5 is kinda scooped and rebel yell is all mids

I had an SH-5 in my Carvin 7 and tim suggested a nailbomb.
It actually ended up sounding very similar to the Sh-5 but a bit "warmer"
which is what I was after and it sounds 'bigger", if you can internalize that.
I have a cold sweat at the neck as well and it's a great combination.

i'd suggest you forget about the custom 5. describe exactly what you want and someone will help you out.
