Title: retolexing a cab
Post by: CJ on August 31, 2007, 02:21:31 AM
I want to refinish my old Marshall 1965A. Its a slanted 4x10. Right now the tolex is completely torn up and theres a huge hole in the grille cloth. First of all, i'm wondering how easy it'll be to fix. And second, i'm wondering where to get the material. I'm expecting this stuff should be incredibly cheap right? I think I want to go white tolex, with probably a black grille clothe, not positive yet though. Also, is there different types of tolex material, like different patterns or something? Like would i want to buy from Marshall, or does it not really matter? also, how hard is it to get off the old stuff?

thanks.

check out ebay for buying tolex, always seems to be a lot, and quite a variety

yeah, it aint cheap!  I spent around £45 quid on red tolex, biscuit grill cloth and white piping. But that what it costs.

If you just go for black it aint to bad - 10 euros here:

3 should see you right, 4 to be sure!!  I am probably over estimating that buts its better to have some left than be an inch short.  You can work it out exactly if you measure the cab to find the surface area

actually i may put off redoing the tolex for now and just put on a new grill cloth-thats all you can really see right now anyway... so will this do the trick?

measure the length and width of each side and add them all togther.  just be aware you will need a little more for going around corners and the like

Tolex is generally around 130cm wide.

should be able to do it with 3 meters i reckon - but it wont leave much room for error
