Title: Conductive Shielding Paint

I'm currently painting the control cavity of my SG build with conductive shielding paint. I had previously shielded it with copper tape, but I later read you're not supposed to have too many seams in the sheilding (mine had loads and quite a few gaps).

I have read about the need to ground the shielding. How do I best acheive this with the shielding paint? I suppose it would help if I understood how sheilding works, but I have no idea.

add a screw and some kind of washer or soldering lug

I had a guitar with shielding paint before, the earth on that was a simple screw through the paint with a wire soldered to it and attached to a pot. I have also read in books that *globing* the paint over the screw as well will aid continuity.

Hi Ted

The shielding forms a barrier around the guitars electronics so that it 'catches' all the interferance and takes it to ground. Otherwise it is picked up by the electronics and then amplified along with the guitar signal - hence there shouldnt be gaps etc as this would allow interferance past.

I've got some copper tape at home which I got from the garden centre for keeping slugs off of plant pots.  Incidentally, it's cr@p for keepinng slugs off, but makes good sheilding.

On my next project I'm intending to stick all the tape onto card (or plastic) of the right shape to keep it all neat and glue that into the cavity.  I don't think that the amount of joints (within reason) is so much of an issue providing that all the parts are joined together.

I found this site (http://www.guitarnuts.com/wiring/shielding/shield3.php) a few days ago. I have made some alterations to my ibanez, a bit more needed, I think, but the site is really very useful in explaining everything.  All you need/want to know about shielding your guitar.  There are also a few tips on grounding, both there and elsewhere (googleable for a numpty like me, so yuo should find it no problem!).

Hey guys I shielded my guitar cavity using paint so much easier than copper tape... anyway, for me shielding is a MUST. Its completely quiet and I use Warpigs with f**kloads of distortion  :twisted:
