Im fudging hooked dudes, i can't get enough of it's balls to the wall attitude but with LOADS of clarity and definition, yet still raw and aggresive...
i couldn't believe my ears, i had it cranked and was jizzing so bad I had to call the other guitarist in my band to come check it - he wants to get one (lucky bar-steward with the money). It's totally crushing tone to the wall.
Normally im not such a marshall fan, i find them a little fizzy and samey. But this has TOTALLY sold me, go and try one. Anyone who wants to buy a new head and cab for Metal and Rock and Roll, GET THE $%ING VINTAGE MODERN, it smokes everything around it
-
very nice amp isnt it? a bit pricy, but from the new marshall lineup, IMO, the only one worth the money.
and in the right hands, it sounds absolutelly terrific
-
I've tried it twice - loved it the first time and thought it was too fizzy the second time. This was a low volumes though I must admit.
A bloke was checkng one out in my local music shop today and it sounded superb. Very "modern JTM45 on steroids".

seems to be quite the common problem... a friend had exactly the same experience, infact i as there second time around and the Orange Tiny Terror sounded far better, haha!
But when i heard it at the Paul Gilbert gig, it was astonishing, i think it just needs to be cranked...
-
i didn't like the one i tried. i managed to get it about half-way up, it definitely sounded better the more it was up. not a bedroom amp, though.
-
I'm intrigued by the Vintage Moderns, but I think I'd rather have a Laney GH50L or a Peavey Windsor if I wanted a single channel british-sounding amp. Can't pass judgement until I've tried one though.
-
in comparison to the GH50L, it's a lot more clear and defined. Less gain, but MUCH more power, even the 50watt VM's just crank out!
I want one, it's just perfect for Thrash
Im sure they will go down in price though... they started at £779 and some some places are selling them for like £599+Postage
-
well, i too would rather have a GH50L, cos IMO, it's a bit simpler to use (even though the VM aint a rocket station itself) i just like the texture of the sound better. but the VM is very good in its own right.
and no.. i dont think there is a 30+ W valve amp, that can pass off as a bedroom amp. valve amps need to be played LOUD!
-
Well I found the Vintage Modern to be one trick pony.
It sounded pure cr@p on too low volumes to start with. Secondly it was VERY hard to EQ. After that the preamp gain is very hard to dial. The detail is way TOO fizzy, but the body can easily get muddy, so after 5-10 minutes I finally got a decent sound out of it. I thought it had too much gain for classic rock, but not enough for anything. I aso thought that for the price you should get a sound that's more than decent, but tbh if you want old school Marshall tones just get a JCM800 or an Orange Rocker 30, which both are way better.

well yeah, i mean obviously amps that are designed to be played loud will sound better when turned up, but with the VM it was like there was no thought whatsoever put towards what it sounded like at lower volumes (and by lower volumes, i mean anything lower than that require to rock wembley stadium). and even cranked up halfway, it didn't sound amazing, if you ask me. just about decent.
oh and welcome to the BK forum, gabe and tim...
:D

i dont know.. both when i tried it in london and at the paul gilbert gig it sounded really decent to amazing

Yeah I agree with Dave.

there's no accounting for taste, to be honest. it's not like there's really anything "right" or "wrong" about tone (apart from the obvious bad ones, lol)... there was just something about it that i didn't like.
and cheers gabe.

I see that Marshall do a 50W Combo of this amp, I have been considering this puppy for a little while now and was curious to read user reviews of it....of course it appears to be a classy amp which i expected nothing less from a newly launched Marsahll amp!
Does anybody feel this amp would compare equally or more favourably to the ENGL Screamer (50W combo) for value for money, features and sound......i feel another dilemma approaching
.....any comments/suggestions to aid the cause would be appreciated
Cheers

Just to point out, at the Gilbert gig it probably had loads of additional EQ from the desk on it, and bearing in mind all the micing and such, it'd probably sound way different if you were sat listening to it in a shop.
Then again, I've come across some sound guys who have totally killed my tone at gigs before. Bah!

Well they're pretty different amps... the ENGL will be more modern, whereas the Marshall will be more voiced for classic/hard rock stuff. I'd be inclined to go with the screamer, but because they're so different only you can decide which one you'd prefer.

I had a Screamer for 2 years, and I tested a VM for about an hour recently (comparing to many other amps). I wouldn't wanna go back to the Screamer, as it didn't have very organic or dynamic tone. The VM does. However the VM is much simpler in terms of loops, ins/outs, channels and switching. So if you need a real clean channel etc, the VM might be the wrong amp, for any other reason the VM kills the Engl.
If you need a channel switcher, you could also consider a DSL50 or DSL100, great amps with lots of tone if you can turn them up a bit.
-
the other thing i'd say is that, assuming the vm combo reacts similarly to the head, if you can't turn it up to deafening volumes, the screamer would be the better choice, if you ask me.
as timi says, though, it really depends what you want it for. you'd really need to try it- judging from this thread alone, there are several people who absolutely love the vm, and several who weren't impressed at all- only way to know which you are is to try it...
-
Ta for the comments!.
The amp will be for house use only - reviews seem to suggest that the ENGL has better cleans whilst of course the Marshall excels with dishing the dirt! The ENGL has more functionality and channel switching options but then again I have been previously hooked on Marshalls (the VS100 combo) and perhaps the all valve Marsahll VM is the 'amp of choice' ....presumably it performs well at low(ish) volumes too and will sound that much better than its solid-state brother regardless.

Hello McFly? Anybody home? ;)
As we've said, the VM isn't that good at low volumes and only appears to shine when cranked. For home use only it's going to sound fizzy. Very fizzy.

Did'nt used to be but after London Powers 'power scaling' I think there def. is now.
Personally love the Fargen Mini-Plex II and Suhr Badger. Currently deciding which to get myself (yes I KNOW these are 18 watters but the likes of Fargen, Suhr, Reinhart, Mojave et all are now using power scaling/dampening tech. in larger wattage amps and sounding great).
-
You can't use the volume pedal in the loop trick to get more volume for solos on the VM apparently. Something to bear in mind.

+1
unless your house is actually the millennium dome or something.
-
I think they are too expensive, for what you get. Although, they might be good for thrash, they may not be good for lounge jazz lol

not when you're listening to stage volume ;)
front row baby!!

Yea I tried the Vintage Modern with Adam a few times, and I did prefer the orange tiny terror but eventually decided to go for a Cornford Hurricane, it's far superior to the Vintage Modern.
Personally I was really disapointed with the Marshall VM, just sounded cheap and processed, had no dynamics or overtones just a really bad pre-amp buzz saw sound even when turned up pretty damn loud it just didn't do it for me at all.
