Title: anyone know about buying/selling shares?
Post by: HTH AMPS on September 15, 2007, 10:54:22 PM
I'm looking to drop a little money into Northern Rock shares - I had it earmarked for something else but I see a window of opportunity here to buy some shares in a normally strong company for rock (no pun intended) bottom prices.

I might be calling this one wrong as I've never played with shares at all, this is just an idea at present and might be a bad one (won't be my first or last, heh).

I haven't tried it yet myself, although a colleague told me it's a great way to learn about the stock market, check out MSN Virtual Trader https://secure.digitallook.com/cgi-bin/digitalcorporate/msn/home.cgi

:D Ha Ha Ha !!!

Believe it or not i was thinking of doing the same thing !!

Go into any bank tell them to get the person that deals with stocks & shares. Theres a designated memeber of staff at all good bank branch`s then tell them what your planning. As i write this Northen Rock shares closed on Friday for about £2.40 a share but in Jan this year they were valued at £12 + a share. Remember shares can go down & the rumour mill says tyhat Northern Rock will be bought out by another bank. Northern Rock have one of the best ¬Books¬ as there refered to in banking anywhere in the UK. The only thing thats actually happend to them is due to the sub prime market in the US collapsing no banks will lend any other banks money. Its not just Northern Rock mind but all banks. Ask the S & S individual to tell you what would happen to your shares if NR were to be bought out by another bank before you decide to jump in or not.

EDIT ; Current share price is 438p a share

Thanks for the replies - I'll go in my bank and see what they say.

I can see this all blowing over in a month or two.  I'd imagine that NR shares could return to their 'normal' level in the next 12 months.  I'm only thinking of bunging a monkey (£500) into 'em, but if I can buy at around the £2.50 mark and they go back upto £12.00 I could be quids in with a return of around £2400 (based on the figures I'm using).

I'm sure I've oversimplified this, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

It's best to watch the prices pretty carefully as a previous boss always reccomended keeping away from such stock, until it starts to rise.

His theory (and he does make money on it) is that although you make slightly less money, you considerably reduce the chances of losing money.

yes, agreed rob. though isn't there also some term about the dead bounce (i can't remember the exact term- it basically means a share which is about to die can rise slightly before it goes out, as once it hits a certain low price a lot of people buy) and bear in mind there are people who know how shares work inside out who are buying. it's hard to make money when you're just a layman.

i've been burned before.    just don't forget you can lose every penny you put in.

:D Share buying = Gamberling. You should never invest more than you can afford to loose. But like gambling if you no what your doing & in this case get good /correct advice then you reduce your chance of making a bad call.

Shares are also long term investments not short term. Dont go into it thinking you can make a quick buck.

Good plan. I might pile in too.

I'd speak to your local branch about opening a share trading account, but be caraful of the fees they charge to trade, both when you buy and sell.

Looks like they closed at 282p - was low as 257p around lunchtime.

I think they're set to fall further still this week - like Muso said, probably not quite rock bottom yet.
