I need a DI box to go in between my guitar and my soundcard line in for amplitube
I'm after something low noise but not expensive, it's for hi gain metal playing
and what's the difference between passive and active DI boxs (I know the actives needs a power supply, and I think they have a preamp or something, but what this actually does, I ain't got a clue!)

I can recommend what NOT to buy - the Palmer PDI-09. Man that sucked for recording. There is a nice thread all about DI boxes on the Andy Sneap recording forum. I think thats located over at www.ultimate-guitar.com or something :S, google it anyway.

Do you need a DI Box or an Audio Interface?
As for DI Boxes, I have a Behringer 2 channel 1 that was about £15-£20 and I've never had a problem with it.

I've had fabulous results with the PDI-09, but I'm only using it as a speaker sim, not as a full DI box.
For a good, cheap-ish, metal-friendly DI, I'd go for the Award-Session JD10:

Don't be put off by the Jerry Donahue association - this thing has tons of gain on tap, a 3-band eq so you can scoop the mids to taste, and a decent speaker simulator. It can also double as a distortion stompbox if put in front of an amp.

I've had good results with the PDI-09 too. What's not to like about it?

Behringer Ultra G - GI 100. You can use it for lots of other applications as well; very flexible.

Without going overboard on tech speak - passive and active is for impedance matching between the guitar and the mixer (or computer card). If you have active pickups its not an issue, but if you put a passive guitar straight into a desk the sound will be somewhat dulled.
if you want to take a clean sound into the computer and do the sound processing there, you just need a basic DI box. If you want to have a distorted sound going in, then you need something with a speaker simulator - personally Ive recorded with a Palmer, an Award pre-amp, and now a demonizer for getting the amp sound to tape, all worked fine for me, just needed a few different tweaks.
Cheers
