Post by: Catalyst77 on September 21, 2007, 10:14:32 PM
Can I mix a Crawler bridge with a mule neck?

yes, it makes sense actually.  Mule is standard PAF fare or very similar at least, crawler is a hotter version of that - should work well in the bridge

But the standard Crawler calibrated set has an Abraxas neck, which is an awesome pickup.

Choice is yours.

I'm late to this thread's party, but it's always worth chiming in to say how awesome the Crawler/Abraxas neck pup is!  8)

So Crawler neck and Abraxas neck is the same? Wow I didn't even know that. Does that mean it's Alnico IV?

That was off topic, sorry. I think a Crawler bridge would work excellently with a Mule neck. You could get screaming rock tones when you want it and switch to the neck/middle (and/or roll the volume down) when you want real vintage tones.

Is it really the case that the crawler and Abraxas neck are the same?

Also does that mean that its likely there may be a couple of other combinations out there where this is also the case?

This, at least, I can confirm courtesy of an email to me from Tim on 07 January 2006:

They are the same pickup Carl ............. it's a wind I really like, DC7.6K Alnico IV and I use it on both Crawler and Abraxas sets as a neck so it's bang on for the Santana tone. Where things differ is in the mid position, the Crawler has AV and AIV on together which produces a serious quack in the mids. The Abraxas has AIV in both positions which produces a smoother mid with less quack.

Cool. I'm looking forward to how this will sound. Hopefully nothing like (recent) Santana though...  :?

No, we're talking Abraxas, Santana 3 - the good stuff.

I still like his guitar tone on the recent stuff, it's just all that guest vocalist nonsense that gets my goat.

Agreed -- on both counts, actually!

Well, OK, I haven't got anything more recent than Supernatural, but the tone there is still great.  I mean, just listen to the guitar breaks on "(Da Le) Yaleo": smokin' tone!

But, yes, the guest vocalist thing is seldom an endurable gimmick for (at best) more than an album's worth, no matter how good your tone is ....
