Title: Gibson SG experts
Post by: Crazy_Joe on September 23, 2007, 02:26:40 PM
I'm looking for an Iommi esque SG, here is what i have nailed it down to, if you have had any experiences with any of these can you please tell me how it was, quality, finish etc. :D

Gibson SG Menace
Gibson SG Gothic
Gibson SG Voo Doo
Epiphone Tony Iommi G-400

Of course the cheapest and probably most logical if i wanted an Iommi SG would be the Epiphone, but there's a lot of dodgey Epiphones out there so i'm not so sure, however Twinfan has an Epi SG and Tom has a Epi LP and they both love them.

Anyone who has tried the Signature Iommi pups too, how does it go abuot capturing the old school Iommi sound?

The Voodoo is a suprisingly nice guitar actually.

Pretty sure they've stopped making them though.

yeah they stopped in 2005 i think, but they come up on ebay every once in a while, they look really nice, though a swamp ash body i think which might not be the best for Iommi.

You want a 'normal' SG - mahogany body with a rosewood neck.

A pimped up Epi is a great guitar, but in this case you're better off with the Gibson.  I wanted a vibrola SG, so I got the Epi.  The Gibson alternative was at least £800 more.  For you, we're talking a couple of hundred quid probably.

The Gothic is probably your best bet out of those.  The Menace has the daft knuckleduster thing going on.

Haha cheers for the info Twinfan :D , though i don't mind the knuckleduster inlay

I might just go for a normal SG, Iommi used red SG's too, it's just i don't know what the quality difference is between a SG Special and an SG Standard etc. Also looking at Jap made Tokai SG-75.

I had an SG special in ebony, really nice guitar. Sounded decent and played well enough, I got tired of the neck an my new found love of Fender necks and single coils.

Didn't Iommi play SG's with p90s anyway?

Jo I would strongly recommend trying out a few SG's in a store.

I only say that as I was really disappointed after I tried a few Gibsons. Felt cheap, poorly made and generally overpriced. Tokai would be a good bet if you can find any of those. I'm sure Twinfan will agree there.

Yeah i totally agree, that's why i am planning a trip to Coda Music this week to try out the Gibsons athe Epi Iommi SG, to see which one i like.

Yep, agree on the Tokai's.  I love my SG Special and Love Rock Relic.  Great guitars and superb value for money.

As Ted says, you need to try several different types of SG to see which suits you best.  P90s vs humbuckers and neck profiles.  The necks in particular can be widely different between models, even within the same manufacturer.

Always try before you buy  ;)

Argh so much to consider, i don't mind about the necks though because i like variety between my guitars, it would be a bit boring imo having all the guitars the same. My explorer has a real chunky 50's style neck which i love, and my LP (which is for sale) has 60's slim i love that too. And ibanez is super thin and wide, so i welcome any neck profle.

I still need to try out P-90's though, have never tried them but always wanted to so that's another thing to do as Iommi used P-90's for most his work in Sabbath. Though this isn't just a sabbath axe, i also need it to go heavier as i play heavier material too, and needs good rolled back cleans which i have started to use a lot rather than switching to the clean channel.

All this should be figured out though this week when i go to destroy all of Coda's sg's which they will love me doing.

Jo, the Tokai MIJ SG I tried the ither day had a massive neck. You'll probably like it if you like fat necks.  :) The only thing you gotta worry about is the balance; some SGs can be very neck heavy.

I played a Menace SG at Wembley Guitar Centre when I was trying out a 5150 mkII - thats a really nice playing guitar, fairly chunky neck and BRUTAL sounding pickups that would be perfect for Iommi riffage.

Try out a Standard. I bought mine late last year and it's a great guitar. Excellent quality and the stock pickups sound pretty decent, although I have replaced them. I don't think I'll ever sell this guitar. The Standard is a little more but it seems worth as they seemed to be the best quality to money ratio. I got mine from samedaymusic.com and it was flawless. I've played a few from Guitar Center and haven't had much bad luck, but some of those guitars are in terrible shape for so called "new" guitars.

I have to say i do enjoy a fat neck on Gibson style guitars, i don't know why i just do :)

I think the problem with the SG standard is that it will have to be an ebay job, unless somebody buys my LP sometime soon, as i will have about 1p left in the bank if i bought it now. But if it feels nice when i go to try it out then i'll save up for a bit longer :D

You usually get a them appearing every 2- 3 months and from all accounts they are well worth waiting for.

If you like the P90 vibe (and with early Mr Iommi who wouldnt) this may be in the ball park http://www.totalmusiccompany.com/tmc/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=shop.flypage_new&product_id=375&category_id=8&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=1

Also remember Mr Iommi likes to have a zero fret, which many people don't like so watch out for any of his Sig models

Is that one still there?  I'd be very tempted if I didn't already have an SG with P-90s.

what's the difference between a zero fret and a non zero fret?

I was just looking at P90's actually, saw the Gibson SG Jr which looks real tasty, though has no neck pickup :(

The Eggle one has a neck pickup (it was factory fitted too).

The zero fret is simply a fret very close to the nut, some people feel that the strings slide a little on bends.

They are pretty uncommon these days, companys such as John Birch, and Shergold used them, and I believe Mt Iommi prefers them

some swear by them, some swear at them

I see, it's very tempting, though i can't try before i buy which i don't like because i usually end up selling the ones i don't try haha.

^ hey thats what Virgin trains are there, I'd rather spend 30 odd quid to get my 700 quid purchase right

But then I'm lazy
