Been listening to some of my old albums today & realised in my opinon how classic some of these are are (IMHO). The players, the tones, everything to me screams...BLOoDY AMAZNG!
Ok so on we go...
1) Amorica - The Black Crowes Rich Robinson & Marc Ford in beautiful harmony, in between the Faces-esque 'Southern Harmony & Musical Company' & the drug addled 'Three snakes & one charm' the brothers created the masterpiece. If you want the Allman Brothers in their prime without the 15 minutes of guitar solos (who doesn't...come on own up!) Then this is it. Guitars & music in perfect harmony.
2) Cry Of Love - Brother It's 1993 grunge has taken over the world but in the midst of this angst comes a band that might well have been touring with early ZZ top, Hendrix & Free, Cry of Love. Based on the near perfect guitarist musings of Audley Freed with the solid bass of Rober Kearns they created a sound that hadn't bee n heard in a while. Minor hits like 'Peace pipe' managed to get them onto the Donnigton Monster of Rock tour & create a bit of buzz. All the best bits of zeppelin, lynyrd, the allmans were neatly packaged together with cracking songs & catchy riffs. After the singer left they managed 1 more album but nothing will beat this one album for pure classic rock. Audley went on to become my hero.
it's late & more will follow!!!

Brother is really an amazing album.
I don't even like that style of rock - But the work is bloody astounding.
Top ten albums?
In no particular order...
Rage Against the Machine - Rage Against The machine
Pretty much one of the undisputed best albums of all time imo - So many amazing tracks, brilliant guitar work, great songs - Just awesome.
Pantera - Cowboys from Hell
Same as above pretty much. Who can dispute Pantera?
Mnemic - The Audio Injected Soul/Mechanical Spin Phenomena
I can't choose between them, so I'll say both. An absolute personal fave of mine - I think I've listened to them more than any other album, over the last few years. Absolutely bloody brilliant.
Machine Head - The Blackening
A modern classic perhaps, not so much "classic" as just bloody awestrikingly brilliant.
Iron Maiden - Brave New World/The Number of The Beast
A classic Maiden album and a new Maiden Album - Both brilliant, in their own way, and don't expect me to say that the new maiden is better or worse than the classic maiden overall, but I'll still say Wickerman is the best song they have ever written imo.
Fear Factory - Demanufacture
Another absolute classic. Revolutionary and interesting even 12 years on.
In Flames - Reroute to Remain
Most In Flames fans will disagree with this, and most music fans will say it doesn't deserve to be in a top 10 - but damnit, this imo is the PERFECTION in album form - May not be classic per sé, but the quality, and production is perfect, and EVERY song is absolutely great, clayman has a couple of brilliant songs, and some weak ones, as does Colony, but Reroute To Remain is totally consistent in it's awesomeness.
Van Halen - 1984
It has Hot for Teacher. Nuf said.
SikTh - The Trees are dead and Dried out - Wait for something Wild
Absolutely pure awesomeness, again, not a classic - But still one of my personal fave albums of all time. Brilliant production - AMAZING Guitar work, and brilliant songs!
I know I ought to have some Zep, ACDC, etc but meh - I know everyone else will add them...
-
The first album listed is my definite number 1, the rest are in an arbitrary order.
Opeth - Still life
A very special album for me, it's just perfect. The first i'd heard from them, and in the first track (The Moor) has the most incredible buildup intro. A bloody great album, the solo in Godheads Lament sends a shiver down my spine every time I hear it, something just really connects with me there :)
Opeth - My Arms, Your Hearse
Again, another superb album from Opeth, not quite on the monumental scale of Still Life, but it's hot on the heels of it.
Anathema - Serenades
A classic album, full of greatness. Anathema still had 'it' for a few more releases, but their latter stuff is not so great.
Esoteric - Subconcious Dissolution into the Continuum
Wow. If there is one word to describe this album, it would be 'huge'. Immensely long and powerful tracks with unsurpassed depth of sound. A real treat for the ears :)
Akerc--ke - The Goat of Mendes
Raw metal, as it should be. No messing from the London lads, easily their best record to date.
Indesinence - Ecstatic Lethargy
Technically a demo, but the tracks on this are on their album (along with a couple of others which aren't as good, hence it's not included). Good doom, good sound :)
Mourning Beloveth - The Sullen Sulcus
Again, good stuff be here.
In Flames - The Jester Race/Black Ash Inheritance
For me, classic In Flames at their peak. Not knocking their recent stuff, it is pretty good, but this is the real deal :)
Autumn - Oschen Vechna
Russian doom metal with classical bits. Love this album, even if it is in Russian!
The Prophecy - Revelations
I've been a fan of this Yorkshire band for a few years now, and their albums get better and better. Really looking forward to the next, but this one is chock-full of great tracks, great production too :)
A selection from my collection... yes, no rock and roll there- although i do enjoy some when i hear it on the radio every now and again, it's not really my bag. Honourable mentions that didn't fit into the top ten are Sabbath and Maiden, both classic bands with too many albums to pick a best from :) Wintersun get a mention too for a cracking fast-paced album. Most won't have heard of many of those, but if you're into your metal, they're good stuff :)
noodle: I'll dispute Pantera if you want  Never been a fan of theirs to be honest, I don't get what all the hoo-har about them is!
-
Good thread. There's nothing more boring that just reading people's "what's your favourite X" lists, but for some reason it becomes a heartfelt experience when just a few words are added to it.
Jason Becker - Perpetual Burn
The Bibel of neoclassical guitarplaying. Every lick is just perfect and performed with a deep passion for music.
Dream Theater - Awake
The album that got me into progressive metal. It just has it all. Excellent songwriting, awe-inspiring performances from evey member of the band, poetic lyrics, and enough balls'n'chunk for straight up metalheads to enjoy. Possibly the most diverse metal album I've heard.
Whitesnake - Slip of the Tongue
This album is everything Led Zeppelin did, only better in every aspect.
Shawn Lane - Powers of Ten LIVE
One of the greatest masters playing some of his greatest song with his greatest band.
Steve Vai - Fire Garden
I could have picked almost any Vai record and said it was a masterpiece. But Fire Garden is, to me, his best effort. So much depth, soul, and passion but never without losing his little quirks and experimentation.
The Who - Who's Next
Every second, every passage, every song and the album as a whole is just plain brilliant.
Opeth - Morningrise
It's always a hard choice to pick one Opeth album out of the other. I went with this because as far as my estimation goes, it has had the most spins on my stereo.
Tool - Lateralus
This was my favourite album for a long time. Lately though, I seem to have forgotten it. Maybe one of these days I'll get back to it.
Eagles - Hotel California
No explanation needed is there?
Ayreon - The Human Equation
This album just makes me happy. That's all there is to it.
-
Ayreon - The Human Equation
This album just makes me happy. That's all there is to it.
I've been singing this album's praises since the day it was released!
I have the collector's edition with the big booklet, interviews, and bonus DVD that shows the making of, which is probably now on Youtube. PDT_008
Fabulous album!!
-
Haha, yep that's what I have too. And I had it about a week after its release. :P
-
some cool picks in here. Here's some more.
3) Ryan Adams - Heartbreaker What happens when your up & coming star alt country band implodes? You become the next big alt country singer/songwriter. This was Ryan Adams first ablum after all the hoo-haa of Whiskeytown going bang & it's beautiful! Ryan know's just how to tug at your heart strings with nar more than an acoustic & a knowing nod. Simplicity is rarely this lovely to listen to.
4) Mick Ronson - Slaughter on 10th avenue How do you get over playing with one of the biggest stars in the world? You become one yourself. Yes he's not the fastest nor the most precise but when you can make 'love me tender' not sound like 60 tonnes of cheese your doing well. Anything else on this album shows how gifted Mick was.

Top 10 most musically influential albums for me are:
edit; descriptions:
PanterA - ALL... that officially counts as one.
I used to listen to a lot of Punk until I heard these guys, Dime's solo's and riffs just inspired me to create ever more challenging music.
Death - Human:
I remember sitting, speeding my tits off on a #10 bus going around bath listening to this album over and over again, being mesmerized by how utterly brilliant it was/is. It still gets spun every so often to remind me that ill never be as clever musically as Chuck.
Cryptopsy - None So Vile
My first taste of what 'real' death metal is capable of. Riffs and melodies, brilliant lyrics and smart song structures. Blasphemy made Flesh was also greatly influential but I hated everything after NSV.
Testament - The Gathering/Joe Satriani - Surfing with the Alien. TIED!
Testament for the pure energy and fun they possess, Satch for his uncanny knack of making a guitar speak with the eloquence of a professor.
Psycroptic - Scepter of the Ancients
I saw these guys live with Anata and partied with them after the show, i hadn't listened to them before that night but i was $%ing hooked. My favorite song of all time: The Valley of Winds breath and Dragons fire made me work on my picking harder than when I listened to Petrucci and Angelo-Batio. The importance of tight picking is more evident here than on and toilet LOG album.
Charles Mingus - Mingus Ah Um
A man tied with Pass on my lead phrasings, the importance of melody in madness and singable licks. Mingus's albums are so important musically it's all I really listen to these days. Each instrument is as important as the next, especially during solos.
Sepultura - Arise
Man I love this album, such riffage and intensity, yet beauty. Pure adrenalin.
Joe Pass - Virtuoso/Shawn Lane - Powers of Ten
I might have to stick Emperor - Anthems in here too. But Joe Pass taught me the importance of feeling and 'going with it', rather than sitting in your room, wanking over the same lick 1,000 times. However, Shawn Lane taught me that mastering that one lick and adding feeling to each note is the most important aspect of soloing
Van Halen - All DLR Era albums... and DLR solo albums with Steve Vai.
I love Eddie's style and phrasing, its something i've been trying to attain for years. Also, Vai's work with Roth is far superior to anything he's done on his own I would wager.
Motley Crue - Dr. Feelgood
The. Party. Record.
there are many more, Motorhead, Zeke, Winnebago Deal, Black Flag but you said only 10 and these are the most influential to my writing.
-
3. Ludovico Einaudi - Eden Roc
good call there. le onde is awesome.
Mine, in no order, and I've probably forgotten something way too obvious...
VH1 Van Halen
Appetite for Destruction G 'n' R.
Ah Via Musicom- Eric Johnson
SRV- best of (i'd pick an album, but it's easier to pick the best of)
Extreme- Pornograffitti
megadeth rust in piece
ozzy blizzard of ozz
vai fire garden
satch surfin' with the alien.
struggling to think of a tenth... not that i can't think of 10 albums, but i can't think of any others offhand which really stand out above any others... i'm tempted to say winger, but i'll probably regret that. unless philly leaps in to my rescue...
-
:D In no particular order :
1 AC/DC - Powerage - if you want to play Metal this is the album to study as it`ll show you how to arrange it as well.
2 Black Sabbath - Heaven & Hell- Simply the best thing they ever did. And its got the best guitar sound iommi ever got.
3 Rainbow - Rising - The blue print for all that was to come. Blackmores finest moment.
4 Tears For Fears - Songs From The Big Chair - Arguably the finest pop album ever. Great songs, great playing, great lyrics & great production.
5 Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffitti - The best collection of songs they ever did. Page`s best moment.
6 Extreme - Pornograffiti - Nuno`s playing here is simply gob smacking, and its full of great catchy tunes to boot.
7 Ozzy Osbourne - Blizzaed Of Oz - Randy showed us the way.
8 Van Halen - 1st - I Cant Wait To Feel Your Love Tonight, enough said
9 Saxon - Strong Arm Of The Law - One of the greatest Metal albums ever made. Power, Great disciplined playing, great mixture of song tempos & every songs a killer you`ll be singing for months later.
10 Autograph [ USA ] Sign In Please - The most fun Metal Album of the 80`s.
Of course this list will change by next week !! :P
:D 8)

OK, here's mine. Choosing it was easy as when I got my 300 CD changer by I started by loading it with my all-time top 40 :-)
Opeth: My arms, your hearse (1998)
Interesting to read Oli's comments, I think the opposite :) This, their third album is the one where they found their sound. It's massive, monumental & IMO they've never quite topped it (much as I love Still Life, Black water park et al). Also, it made a very unhappy time in my personal life bearable, so it has some extra poignancy to me....
Exodus: Force of habit (1992)
Reckoned by many to be their weakest album, but I've always loved it. Really good production (even by today's standards) with some fantastic playing from the "H-team" :)
Obituary: The end complete (1992)
The last word in death metal sludge. Absolutely awesome riffage & menacingly heavy from start to finish. Nobody (& I mean nobody) else could have written & recorded this....
Bolt Thrower: ...For Victory (1994)
Really under-rated British death metal band who have always stuck to their sound. Some people criticise them for being a bit samey (almost all their songs follow the same structure/formula), but I really like their sound & I've always enjoyed this album.
In Flames: Soundtrack to your escape (2004)
Interesting to read Oli & noodle's comments, much as I like Reroute, Clayman & Jester (& all the other IF CDs), Soundtrack is by far my favourite. It's MASSIVELY heavy, with some great songs & is the only 21st century release in my all-time top 10 (rearranging the CD changer to get it in was a real pain in the arse )
Napalm Death: Fear, emptiness, despair (1994)
They slowed down slightly for this one, but that's a good thing. The songs have a really "up" tempo to them that just makes you want to jump around the room
Machinehead: Burn my eyes (1994)
Are there any metal fans who don't own a copy of this? :)
Iron Maiden: Powerslave (1984)
Even in '84 I disliked the thin production on this album, but it's more than made up for by some great songs. One of the first albums I ever bought ('Piece of mind' was actually the first :)), I have good memories of this album - the first gig I ever went to was on the "Slavery tour".
Rush: Exit stage left (1983? got mine in 1986)
OK, a bit of a cheat to include what it basically a "greatest hits with crowd noises" album, but this was what got me into Rush & I still listen to it loads. 2004's Rush in Rio is a far better live album, but Exit stage left made a very big impression on me, so gets into my top 10.
At the gates: Slaughter of the soul (1995)
Real shame that they split after this album :( It's a masterpiece of fast yet melodic death metal.
-
Wow, you really like the underdog albums, don't ya, Antag? PDT_008
Very interesting choices!!
-
Wow, you really like the underdog albums, don't ya, Antag? PDT_008
Very interesting choices!!
 yeah. I guess when I start to like a band, they stay liked, barring a major stylistic change (e.g. Pitch Shifter post-"Infotainment?").
Also I don't subscribe to this idea that you have to name drop a band's first album in order to be a "real" fan (not that I'm accusing anyone here of doing that).
Almost all the bands I like got better (IMO) after their first release :)
-
Yeah some get better..or like Van Halen they get worse and do van halen III
-
As people have said before, in no particular order.
Bon Jovi - New Jersey - Had it all, the ballads, the rock, and Sambora's best ever tone in my opinion.
The Beatles - Sgt Peppers - Enough said.l
Thin Lizzy - Live/Live - It had John Sykes and Still In Love With You. Quite possibly my favourite solo ever.
Richie Sambora - Stranger In This Town - The man knows how to write a awesome blues rock album!!!
Whitesnake - 1987 - Again, it had it all, big tone, and awesome songs.
Extreme - Pornograffiti - If this album was stolen, I'd go out and by it again straight away!
Avenged Sevenfold - Waking The Fallen - Just a wicked band, wicked guitars, wicked drums, and an alright singer :D :D
Pantera - Cowboys From Hell - That album had me busy learning riffs for months!
Skid Row - Slave To The Grind - Again, 'nuff said.
And now for a guilty pleasure!
Paramore - Riot! - I just find it catchy as hell, and the guy can play, and the girl can sing :D
-
getting me thinking
Badlands - on of the first two albums, or both
Whitesnake 1987
Ozzy Osbourne - No Rest for the Wicked
Def Leppard - Hysteria - musical genius, whether you think its cheesy or not :P Steve Clark songs had a great feel
Motley Crue - Dr Feelgood
Bon Jovi - Slippery when wet
I think thats me done really, but the live tour shows after those albums can double up :)
-
arg i forgot def leppard...
also a lot of people seem to like extreme, which is cool. :D
-
It would be easy to list 40 or 50 favourite albums, but coming up with just 10 is really difficult. I feel guilty leaving out so many great bands (sorry Led Zeppelin, Mountain, Tool, Tesla, Badlands, COC, Masters Of Reality, Kyuss, Winger, Y&T, Spiritual Beggars, Megadeth, Maiden...), but JT in particular has already listed a few I might have included, which helps a bit. A lot of this is stuff I've liked since I was 15, 16, 17 but I think that's when you're most open and impressionable, so no apologies for that. Here we go, looooong post coming:
Deep Purple - Made In Japan (1972)
Ritchie Blackmore was my first guitar hero. Zeppelin were probably the "better", more talented band, but there was something so funky about Purple. I have a soft spot for Deep Purple Mark III (David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes sharing lead vocals, unbelievable!) but I'm going with Made In Japan because it includes the best-ever version of that song. Blackmore's tone on the solo is just astonishing, and gives me chills every time I hear it (it did again just now!).
Montrose - Montrose (1973)
The no-frills, adrenaline-charged debut from a young hard rock four-piece, led by a hotshot guitarist and a charismatic, blond-haired singer. It's on Warner Bros records, it's produced by Ted Templeman, it can only be one thing - Montrose! "Rock The Nation" and "Rock Candy" are magnificent, but "Make It Last" is astounding. Weird that Sammy went on to join that other band...
Scorpions - Fly To The Rainbow (1974)
There are many brilliant Scorpions albums, but their relatively obscure second album is, honestly, my favourite. There's just something about the slightly awkward, rambling, hippyish, melodic songs that I love. And listening to Ulrich Roth tear through "Drifting Sun" like a neo-classical, Teutonic Jimi Hendrix is awe-inspiring.
Robin Trower - Robin Trower LIVE! (1975)
Robin Trower has always seemed like a reserved sort of guy, but in Stockholm on 3 February 1975 the man was on fire. This whole album bristles with joyful energy. I can honestly say that nothing in the world makes me happier than hearing the opening bars of "Too Rolling Stoned"!
Rush - Permanent Waves (1980)
Moving Pictures is often named as Rush's best album, but Permanent Waves was my first and it's still my favourite. They were just moving away from the fantasy/science fiction lyrics to something more down-to-earth, and the band seemed to be crackling with energy and power, right on top of their game. Fantastic. And I still know all the words!
MSG - The Michael Schenker Group (1980)
Blackmore got me interested, but this, more than any other album, made me want to learn to play the guitar. I didn't get very far with that really, but I still love the record. Schenker was never the greatest of songwriters, but some of the finest melodic hard rock guitar solos ever recorded lie within these grooves.
King's X - Out Of The Silent Planet (1988)
Just as Nirvana were about to take over the world, there were some bloody great new bands taking hard rock in interesting new directions - Living Colour, Warrior Soul, Saigon Kick, Galactic Cowboys and best of all King's X. Combining huge guitar riffs with growling, funky bass, strong melodies and beautiful harmony vocals, they went on to make many great albums but they never bettered the first one - and "Power Of Love" is one of my all-time favourite songs.
Circle Of Soul - Hands Of Faith (1991)
Criminally ignored funky hard rock band with great, great songs and two fine singer/guitarists in Joseph Mastrokalos and Granny Cleveland. I never go more than a couple of weeks without listening to this album. Sadly, they only did one other, One Man's Poison, which is very nearly as good.
Trouble - Manic Frustration (1992)
It's supposed to be cool to like Trouble's first couple of albums, Psalm 9 and The Skull, before they "sold out". Bollocks to that. Great as those albums are, Manic Frustration is 100 times better. Crushing riffs, killer solos but, best of all, utterly fantastic songs. It just couldn't be any better.
Clutch - Slow Hole To China (2002)
Undoubtedly my favourite "new" band, I love the rhythm section and Neil Fallon's genius lyrics. It's pretty much impossible for me to pick a favourite Clutch album, and it may seem like I'm being deliberately obscure, but I'm going to go with the rarities compilation Slow Hole To China because it includes "Guild Of Mute Assassins", quite possibly the finest song (and song title) ever.
-
OK not my top 10, but albums that have influenced me as a guitarist:
The Shadows - 20 Golden Greats, Apache is an all time classic
Pink Floyd - The Wall, as a concept and as collection of fantastic songs played effortlessly.
AC/DC - Back in Black - so that's what this rock music is all about eh?! The intro to Hells Bells... probably only bettered by Hot for Teacher for me.
Hendrix - A best of Album I cant remember (and there's plenty of them! All along the Watchtower, rock acoustic and such a beautiful solo, then Voodoo Child...still sounds jaw dropping now.
Satriani - SWTA - re-invigorated/re-invented guitar instrumental music, possibly the pefect driving album?!
Jeff Beck - Guitar Shop - The best guitar album for me - amazing tunes, execution, production, musicianship..I'm in heaven :)
Zep - The Song Remains the Same - saw it at the cinema, just incredible.
Van Halen - 1984 - made me realise that whatever level I got to, there was a whole other planet that just wasn't going to be accessible!
SRV - In Step or Texas Flood - I can't decide!
Rainbow - Best Of - Introduced me to Ritchie, fantastic... if only he would put down the pointy hat and pick up a strat again!
If I could only have these albums, I think I would be very happy.

This is a tough one and I am changing my mid even as i write but here goes:
The Beatles: Revolver-predictable of me to say it but one I go back to all the time
The Beatles: Rubber Soul ( Lennon was cooking on this one)-a band heading towards a peak
Jimi Hendrix -Axis:Bold as Love -'nuff said
Jimi Hendrix- Are You Experienced- 'needs no explanation
Little Feat - Waiting For Columbus-one of the greatest bands ever
The Rolling Stones- Exile on Main Street
Finn Brothers -Everyone is Here
Joe Bonnamassa-Sloe Gin- a new album but already a classic
The Faces- A Nods as Good as a Wink to a Blind Horse- great band, great album with the sublime Ronnie Lane's "Debris"
B B King-Live at the Regal - always a "go to" for me
-
:D Thanks Phil !
You just reminded me of a whole load of albums i forgot !!
Could have, Journey, Motley Crue, Deep Purple, how about Queensryche - Operation mind crime 1 i no the list is endless. Maybe we should have changed this & said your top 5 albums from the 60`s then your top 5 from the 70`s then 80`s, 90`s, 2000`s etc. might have made it more interesting. What do we think i mean i`ve just realised as i write this but i could`ve said Thin Lizzy !
:D 8)

You had to ask, didnt you ;)
Lets see....in the order in which they occur to me:
Isis, Panopticon
Beautifull album. Heavy as hell, but majestic with it and just as often tranquill and soothing. Magnificent song structuring and harmonizing, and layering. Probably my favourite album.
Cryptopsy, None so Vile.
Well chosen, Orkestra! I'm not a fan of Dan Greenings vocal style (or of giving yourself a silly stage name [outside the internet  ]) but flo mournier is an astonishing drummer, and the interplay between him a Jon Levasseur is second to none. Langlois often funky bass is innovative and used to enhance the song rather than just the low end of the guitars. Really influential to my riffing and lead playing (phobophiles solo is amazing  ) and gave me an imputus to clean up my playing and take it to the next level (I was spinning my late 80s thrash and making do with early metalcore just beore discovering this). I love whisper supremacy as well, but thats another story..
Nile, Annihilation of the Wicked.
Shear brutallity and instrumental mastery. Makes me want to run round the walls. Nuff said.
Metallica, The Black Album/Master of puppets -tied, but read on
I dont really listen to it any more, the black album got me playing guitar. I do still love Puppets and it provided me with my first real challenge a few months later: something I loved the sound of and HAD to learn how to do it. You know what I'm talking about! Oh yes.
Tommy Emanuel, Only
The melodies! I'd give body parts for Tommy's sense of melody. Surely you only need one eye? And his technique, being a metal player with a hint of blues and useless at fingerstyle, is mesmerising to me.
Death, Sound of Persaverence
Chuck shows us how its done. Tunefull and varied guitar playing, well crafted songs and get yer lighters out for voice of the soul 8)
Iron Maiden, Number of the beast
If you have a soft spot for the album that got you playing you HAVE to have one for the album that got you into metal and the first album you ever bought. Probably the only thing I listened to when I was 8 that I still listen to. You have to give that a place on the list!
Al DiMeola, John McLaughlin & Paco DeLucia, Friday night in sanfransisco.
Its not just the stunning playing. Its not just the beautifull, lively music. Its not just the interaction between these 3 godlike guitarists. The thing that really sets this off for me is you can hear the intimacy with the crowd and how much they're loving it. Stick it on headphones and youre there (and how I wish I was!!!)
Origin, Echoes of Decimation
This, to me, is the epitome of extreme metal (to date). Flawless technique, unrelenting and savage, but still tunefull and musical, even catchy. One of the few albums I can listen to more than once in a day. Its also given me another Master of Puppets/None so Vile type playing inspiration.
-
Sevendust: Sevendust. Loved their opening album. Things went a little awry in some of their later stuff, but it wouldn't stop me seeing them again!
RATM: RATM - again, didn't much like the later stuff, but this first album is simply stupendous
Machine Head - Sorry to carry on the "first album" thing, but Burn My Eyes is a stunner, and no mistake.
Stuck Mojo: Snapping Necks/Pigwalk. Undecided, I just love stuck mojo. BEST. LIVE. ACT. :)
Metallica: Pastor - just... yeah :)
Pantera: Sorry, it has to be all. Can't get enough of it.
Sepultura: Roots. yeah, I know it's the tribal one, but it came out at a really good time in my life, and stays one of the most played albums I have. Plus it gave me my internet name :)
Raised Fist: Dedication and Sound of the Republic. Their sound has developed over the years to something that surpasses "wall of noise". Absolutely superb feel to these guys' music. Can't choose between the albums, but I think Message Beneath Contempt has to be my current favourite track.
I'm going to leave it at that, mainly because there are so many more, and I wouldn't want to pick just 3 to fill up to 10 ;)
Oh, and sorry if I offend anyone here, but I can't describe how physically sick with Rage I get when I hear the Beatles, or Oasis for that matter. I simply can't listen to them, I end up starting fights and destroying stuff. Makes me mad mad mad MAD how you can get rich and famous for being simply, utterly, and absolutely f****** s***. Rant over, for now :)

PS, and dude, scissor sisters? WTF?

here's my top 10 Metal albums
1. Metallica - Master Of Puppets
My favourite album of all-time! Every single track is 100% killer. I know it's a bit cliche and I think that this album gets some false praise but I really love it!
2. Blind Guardian - Imaginations From The Other Side
Here's how a power metal album should be made! Again, not a single filler, full of killers. F'ing epic and extremely catchy choruses, awesome guitars, awesome melodies and harmonies, awesome drumming, awesome atmosphere, awesome production, just PERFECT ALBUM! And Hansi Kürsch is the best singer on the earth, and this album is his best show-off!
3. Judas Priest - Painkiller
This album is just unbelievable, it's extremely rare to get one album full of such amazing tunes! Also one of my favourite guitar tones ever... also I just have to mention the extremely cool guitar solos!
4. Opeth - Still Life
I had very hard time choosing my favourite Opeth album, but I think Still Life takes the prize. Progressive metal at it's best! Just unbelievable, I don't think I really can describe the album very well without doing a 5 page essay. :P
5. Arcturus - The Sham Mirrors
Another progressive metal MASTERPIECE! Here's where Kristoffer Rygg totally shines at the vocals, Hellhammer is probably my favourite metal drummer and Sverd really shows how much he is capable of as a composer and pianist! This is a must own for any avantgarde metal fans.
6. Agalloch - Ashes Against The Grain
This album probably wouldn't be so high if it wasn't autumn at the moment, but at melancholic times as these, this album is simply perfect! The atmosphere it creates is indescribeable, it always leaves me thinking and staring silently in total awe.
7. Green Carnation - Blessing In Disguise
Progressive metal gem. Unbelievably beautiful album! A perfect example of progressive metal where the emphasis is on the emotional and extremely soulful tunes rather than mindless and technical solo wanking. An album I can recommend to everybody who likes music with feeling,
even if they didn't like metal music in general!
8. Gamma Ray - Land Of The Free
Another absolute power metal masterpiece! Those hundreds and hundreds of very average and unoriginal power metal bands should take this album to a mass listening. Epic build-ups? Catchy choruses? Amazing melodies? Unexpected and totally awesome break downs? Awesome guitar solos? You got it all and much much more! Kai Hansen is probably THE power metal god!
9. Tżr - Eric The Red
Did someone mention folk metal? Because Tżr always comes to mind first when someone does, and not without a reason! This album is so full of cheerful and uplifting melodies you really can't do anything but "enter the viking mode"! Also the mix of 3 different languages works extremely well!
10. Wintersun - Wintersun
Probably the best melodic death metal (if you can call it that?) album of all-time in my opinion! Jari Mäenpää is a modern metal god, the compositions are amazing and unbelievable, here's the album that shows that growling with a melody can be extremely beautiful! Special mention for Death And The Healing which is totally out of this world!
Yeah that list was pretty damn hard to make, feel very sad that I had to leave some amazing gems out like Emperor, Megadeth, Edguy, Testament, Eluvieitie, Iron Maiden, Nokturnal Mortum, Death, Pain Of Salvation, Primordial and many more...
Also, this list would've been dominated by mostly just Metallica and Blind Guardian but I decided to go with only 1 album per artist :P

Sorry guys I've bee naway with work...now let's get this moving again
Robbie McIntosh - Widescreen this guy is seriously under-rated! Being the guitarist for Paul McCartney is no mean feat, but to also be the guitarist for The Pretenders as well....well that's just being c--ky! This was his 2nd album & it shows in the quality of the songwriting. Beautiful ballads sit next to rocking blues tunes. There's some lovely guitar work on here especially on 'No feeling for the blues' & if 'Special fried turnip' doesn't make it want you learn it...your soul-less! Tasteful with great songs, what else can you ask for?
Free - Tons of sobs How can I pick a band that are universally known as one of the best blues/rock bands ever? Easy when your 1st album is more blues than rock & doesn't contain 'All right now'. Personal prefernce though it is, I think that overall this album show's off Paul Kossoff's playing better than any other album. 'Walk in my shadow' with it's lolloping bassline & killer solo makes me tingle everytime. The re-mastered version with BBC sessions etc makes this an essential purchase

He also did some excellent guitar tracks for Talk Talk (Lifes what you make it for example)

This is hard to do... so this is not in order of faves, just the 10 albums I love most:
1. Machine Head - Burn My Eyes - Just frigging blistering!
2. Pantera - Vulgar Display of Power - My first Pantera album, just amazing!
3. Lamb of God - As The Palaces Burn - Opening track melts your face, and the album finishes your body in it's inferno, lol
4. Pantera - Far Beyond Driven - Some gorgeous power-grooves and amazing riffs from the late, great Dime!
5. Dream Theater - Awake - First DT album I bought, this one has it all. Fave tracks are The Mirror and Lie, especially when played together, hehe.
6. Sikth - ...Wait For Something Wild - Stunning musicianship, amazing duel vocals, brilliant lyrics....and just to re-affirm this point...AMAZING musicianship...and from the UK too. :D
7. Killswitch Engage - The End Of Heartache - Anthemic in every way, you can really feel most of the songs on this album, and there are moments when your body involuntarily starts to headbang.
8. Nine Inch Nails - Pretty Hate Machine - Just an amazing album, has always been my fave and probably always will be.
9. Jethro Tull - Songs From The Wood - Makes me want to prance around like an elf, especially on the title track.
10. Fear Factory - Archetype - Hmmm, this album hasn't got loads of great songs on it, but it's all worth being in this list for the opening track on it's own, absolutely blistering!
-
Tull now there is another band I forgot..wasn't especting that in mixed in with the rest of your list
-
I like thinking about these lists and reading other people's choices, but always hate making them myself because I know I'm leaving out far too much good stuff. Here are the ten albums I'd load into the CD player for a long journey (or, indeed, which I've currently queued in Amarok to listen to for the rest of the night). In alphabetical order, because music is not the Olympics. :)
1. Alice in Chains, Dirt
When grunge was happening my favourite band was Soundgarden; but now I tend to listen to AiC most. The songs on Dirt are uniformly killer, and it gets the nod over their self-titled album because the balance between grinding riffs and vulnerable introspection is best on this one.
2. Cocteau Twins, Heaven or Las Vegas
I love Robin Guthrie's amazing array of unearthly guitar tones and layered effects, but the reason I never get tired of listening to the Cocteaus is Liz Fraser. Her voice is, to me, the most moving instrument that's ever been recorded. "Fifty-Fifty Clown" and "Frou-Frou Foxes in Midsummer Fires" are perfect.
3. The Cure. Disintegration
My favourite album of all time, and I doubt anything will ever displace it. I can't bring myself to skip a single track on it, and the emotional journey this album takes me on is as powerful and personal every time I listen to it. Fun fact: most weeks my top ten would have included at least three other Cure albums, because it's not real music if it doesn't make your mascara run.
4. Kaki King, Until We Felt Red
This is my current favourite "guitar" album. "Gay Sons of Lesbian Mothers" is catchy as hell, but the whole album has a great mellow vibe and I could listen to it on repeat all night. I'm going to see Kaki King in London next month and I really can't wait.
5. Kyuss, Welcome to Sky Valley
Such a great album. Huge guitar riffs and earthshaking tones, ranging from bluesy garage rock grooves to huge psychedelic epics like "Whitewater".
6. Metallica, Master of Puppets
I feel a bit unoriginal for this one. But it's dead good. If it makes you feel better, pretend I said Rust in Peace by Megadeth.
7. Siouxsie and the Banshees, Juju
I love the edgy guitars on tracks like "Hallowe'en" and "Sin in my Heart", and Siouxsie is one of my favourite singers. Deftones later stole the riff to "Monitor" and recycled it as "Be Quiet and Drive", but the original is still the best.
8. Various artists, Take Me Home: a Tribute to John Denver
Some lovely songs here, being performed by some of my favourite indie rock artists like Rachel Goswell, Innocence Mission, Bonnie "Prince" Billy and Tarnation. The best thing on here is the Red House Painters' version of "I'm Sorry", which is a heartbreaker.
9. Weezer, Weezer/The Blue Album
I vacillated for a while, wondering whether to put Drums and Wires by XTC, but this one will do for a power pop/geeky rock experience. Great tunes, a real lesson in songcraft throughout, with some ace little licks and lovely guitar sounds in the mix as well. Mainly I just like the little touches I can identify with, like "In the Garage" which reminds me of my own suburban teenaged years.
10. Westside Connection, Bow Down
One of the hardest rap albums of all time - they call out everybody on this one. Angry political and social diatribes, gang warfare and violent West Coast/East Coast rivalry are blended with some dry wit from Ice Cube and WC. For me they could have left Mack-10 out of the group without any ill effect, but it's my token rap album anyway mainly because of "The Gangsta, the Killa and the Dope Dealer" which samples "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails.

Superb list of bands.
-
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Nuthin' Fancy I LOVE this album, yeah it hasn't Freebird or Sweet Home Alabama on, but it's got some of the dirtiest, grittiest southern blues going.'On the Hunt' creates the perfect riff (sorry Sir Jimmy Page!), 'Am I Losin' is lovely song to make you feel all warm inside. Lovely guitar playing throughout this album from Allen Collins & Ed King (Gary Rossington hardly played).
-
Ahh Pibroch (Cap In Hand) what an intro, the sound and the attack..one of the best for me :) and yet when Tull get played (and i'm talking about you Planet Rock :) ) it never seems to get a look in...
-
Tull now there is another band I forgot..wasn't especting that in mixed in with the rest of your list
Yeah Tull hold a special place in my list, just as a band really. Just something about them, dunno what, makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside, hehe.
I quite forgot Dirt by Alice in Chains, I always tend to miss something major out on these lists cos I rush myself to get it posted. But that album would definitely be in there had I remembered it, hehe.
Also, a band called Days of the New from the U.S, great acoustic rock band, I don't have a fave album though...well...maybe the first one, heh.

3. The Cure. Disintegration

I can't bring myself to skip a single track on it, and the emotional journey this album takes me on is as powerful and personal every time I listen to it. Fun fact: most weeks my top ten would have included at least three other Cure albums, because it's not real music if it doesn't make your mascara run.
Very good taste, if I may say... Sometimes this album is just too emotional for me... but I couldn't live without it.
-
Tull yeah got to love em seen them and there ex guitarist live..great
-
Right then.......seeing as everyone else is doing it I guess I might as well add to the collection too, but beware all you metal heads there's some serious rock cheese here!!! :D
Def Leppard - Hysteria
This was the first guitar album I ever brought as a kid, and still holds the mantle of one of the only CD's in my collection that doesn't have a song that gets skipped on it. 'Armageddon It' is still one of my favourite riffs, and 'Rocket' also has one of the best drum riffs going......you know what the song is before the vocals or guitar even kicks in!
Guns N Roses - Appetite For Destruction
Another album with not one weak song on it. Makes loading it on the iPod dead easy as I just select the whole album and away you go! 'Sweet Child O' Mine' is still in my estimation the greatest guitar riff ever written, and remains my favourite song ever.....full stop! I had only learnt the E, D and A chords on my first guitar when I got the tab for Appetite and taught myself how to play the 'sweet child' riff! I could play that before I even learnt an F chord!
AC/DC - Back In Black
I know the purists will always say that Bon Scotts work with AC/DC was the best stuff that AC/DC did, but Back In Black was simply the album that had it all. I still love playing songs from that album.
John Mayalls Bluesbreakers featuring Eric Clapton
The 'Beano' album. Damn this album is good, and was the genesis of that wonderful combination of Marshall and Les Paul! This was the album that took me away from the bastions of hard rock (and metal in my uni days) and introduced me to how bloody good the blues could be, and also told me that I'd NEVER be a lead guitarist!
Aerosmith - Toys In The Attic
I could select God knows how many Aerosmith albums, but 'Toys' is the album that I always go back to when I feel like indulging in a good bit of classic blues rock. Aerosmith really know how to take Blues and wring every last pound out of those simple 12 or 16 bars and turn it into blistering rock.
Bon Jovi - Slippery When Wet
Oh Yes!! Poodle rock at its sublime best! Bon Jovi are much maligned by many out there, including many guitar fans, but they still put on one of the best live shows out there, and 'Slippery' is still one of those albums that a non-fan could pick up and know at least 3 songs on there. Who on here doesn't sing 'Livin' on a Prayer' at the top of their voice when it comes on in the pub at the end of the night?
Poison - Flesh and Blood
More Poodle rock I'm afraid folks! I love this album and it has some great guitar work on it from CC Deville, including some brillant riffs that just beg to be worked out and played very loudly. Just a shame that I've never got on with Superstrats to make the most of playing along!
U2 - Achung Baby
Somehow or other the Edge always seems to get missed out on any review of great guitarists, but he's done some fantastic work. Achung Baby was the pinnacle of U2's guitar based work that they've done before they kind of got a bit too synth happy.
Queen - Greatest Hits II
OK, OK........it's a Greatest Hits album, but Queen just had some much good material out there it's so bloody difficult to chose just one album when you have a fantastic Greatest Hits album to chose from! Brian May is also gobsmackingly good, even if his hair hasn't changed in 30 odd years!
Led Zeppelin - The Song Remains The Same
The first time I heard this album I heard 'Rock and Roll' and immediately sat down and started to work it out.......that's how good it is. Jimmy Page is another one of those utter bar-stewards who you just listen to and know that you'll NEVER be that good on the guitar! Another one of those insufferable gits who drove me to opera singing! I'll always play the guitar, but I know I'll never get that good!
-

+1
some real work went into the songs on that

Though i have to agree it's a quality album, gotta love the combo of Ice Cube and WC!

Yeah, it has some serious heat. I was originally going to go with Ready to Die by Biggie, but although it's a better album by a better rapper it doesn't make me laugh out loud anywhere near as much as this one. I have a finely tuned sense of the ridiculous, as befits a long-haired metalhead who listens to rap music and plays shoegaze music. :)
-
Jonesy, you've got some great picks there. On with show...
8) Quireboys - Well Oiled This band was one of the most under-rated the first time round, were chart friendly (I don't love you anymore, sex party etc) but rock'd with the best of them...then grunge happened and nobody wanted a good ole fashioned rock n roll band any more...except a few of us heathens. Well they got back together with a changed line-up released an album & did..OK, then Spike (vocals) started hanging out with another geordie called Paul Guerin & the new line up began. Then they came out with this amazing album. Don't get me wrong, it's nothing startling or new, but it's a perfect album to me. It would fit straight in with any Faces album or Free albums. Paul Guerin & Guy Griffin have a great interplay, pip on drums bangs it like Bonzo, Keith Weir is my new favourite keyboard player, Nigel Moog plays like his life depends on it & Spike is Rod Stewart before he went pop...and the best part they're all sound guys, Paul's the reason I got into Tokai guitars. I suggest you check it out.
-
Yeah they were'nt bad seen them first time and just latel...damn said that out loud
-
(in best Nelson voice) HAHA...oh hang one I see them whenever I can...D'OH!
