Looking for recommendations/pros and cons etc?

Maxon AD-9 is thought to be the dogs bollocks though I've never had one.

I used to have an EH Memory Man and it was a really nice pedal.

Deluxe memory man! I have one and love it, such a brilliant pedal.

ones not exactly better than the other, its just a matter of preference.

Digital delay is good in the way that all it does is create a delay effect with almost complete transparency --> no colouration of tone. And they can delay easily up to something like 16 seconds. But at the same time, digital effects can sometimes seem to steal out some of the soul and warmth of the tone.

Analogue delays tend to have a warm liquidy feeling to them, but they colour your tone slightly. A downside is your delay length tends to be pretty limited.

Downsides to both: they eat batteries like none other and tend to be really pricey.

Go a/b some in a shop. Tell me what ya think :)

Diamond Memory Lane is top of the range unless you go for real tape ...

The old Boss DD-2 is brilliant - it's a digital delay but it has a lovely warm mellow sound like an analog. It's not as brittle and harsh as, say, a DD-5 or DD-6.

If you got the money, look at Robert Keeley's modded AD-9 or DD-3. Keeley's the man!

I bought an Artec Analog Delay a few months ago.  It's not quite as nice sounding as a Memory Man, but it's about half the price and cheap considering it's analog and true bypass:

http://www.thomann.de/gr/artec_analog_delay.htm

Also, Analogman recently released an analog delay which has had good reviews.  US$145 but you have to keep an eye on the website for when they're available.

It's not analogue but worth checking out: the Boss RE-20 space echo. It's a digital replica of the old RE-201.

I got one a week ago. It sounds and reacts just like a real tape unit. Check out some of the reviews posted on the web. This thing is as good as everyone says it is.

Fulltone Tube Tape Echo!!

http://www.fulltone.com/tte.asp

trust you to suggest the absolute most expensive delay box ever made.

Probably cheaper to employ a second guitarist to follow you about and play every note you do just a few milliseconds after you.

(btw, I have no doubt that the fulltone tube tape echo is the best around, as you are, of course, the ancient of metal. just don't expect to see me shell out £600 for one any time soon)

I have been wathing this thread as I have been considering an analogue echo pedal, however nothing seems to offer the multi tap capabilitys that I want :(

Nothing seems to suit except a binson (or possibly an echoplex) for the early Floyd sounds (not the Shadows sounds which I have a soft spot for but don't aspire to)

They sound absolutely gorgeous, but come on - £1758 (inc VAT) for a delay unit

They do sound the business, but they would need to at that price.

On Topic :
For digi echos I liked the digitech and the line 6 echo park (but not the big DM one) in their tape sim modes. My Boss DD5 is a good delay but it's too clean and I want multi tap (I however do enjoy jamming over the 5 second delay)

For analogue I you can find old Arion, Pearl and Ibanez which sound quite good and at decent prices. Though I do like the Memory Man despite them being noisy.

Off Topic:
For my own purposes I am hunting Binsons but the very cheapest I have seen on the last 4 years is 375 quid (they go up when I actually have the money). Also their preamps are supposed to contribute hugely to their sound

The Shadows style clips actually reminded me how much better tape (and analogue) delays sound, and how mad the delays they used actually where. Damn now I have to hunt out my pre teen albums (still atleast I can play the songs)

Thanks for the heads up and suggestions but as with all these purchases I guess I'm gonna have to put some thro' their paces.

The T REX replica and TC Electronics Vintage are possibles as well.....

Agree, they sound fantastic and I'd love to have one- but its outside of my budget by some margin!

^ Heh, theres always something more expensive

The TC & T-rex items are always a good bet

Apparently the Moog analogue echo is supposed to be quite something (I may try one out myself on Sunday)

added this bit :

Just did a little searching, the moog is a little expensive (for me) @ 465 quid, at that price I'd bite the bullet and use the same amount for a vintage binson.

Hmmm according to thomann the t-rex replay is a digital delay and I'm not sure about the TC. Personally if I was heading for a digital unit with emulation I'd look at the Echo Park or perhaps even better the Boss RE 20 (Space Echo emulator) as it has an excellent rep (from what I have read)

Thomann seem to have some good prices on analogue units ATM

http://www.thomann.de/gb/ibanez_ad9.htm 114 quid
http://www.thomann.de/gb/tech_21_boost_dla.htm 120 quid

I also forgot about the Visual sound H20 http://www.thomann.de/gb/visual_sound_h2o.htm @ 120 quid (I actually suspect a price error as any I have seen are more expensive)

Rob...

I have an old Ibanez AD-80 and a Danelectro Reel Echo.  The Ibanez is the best and smallest, but the Reel Echo is pretty nice too.  The current Ibanez is the AD-9 and if that is similar to the AD-80, it should sound good.  My old tube Copycat was the best though!!

If you want it a bit cheaper: The Red Repeat. (No tap tempo, though)

Akai headrush is only about £100 and has a lot of nice features too.

I left the headrush out as it's a digital pedal (same as the nova) as I thought he was requesting analogue pedals only.
