Sorry for the lame pun in the title :) Just threw this clip together for those who mistakenly believe that:
a) Holy Diver can't do METAL
b) Holy Diver doesn't work in Les Pauls
(Actually, I threw it together while trying to figure out how to use my new recorder, but that's a story for another thread ;))
Guitar: Gibson Les Paul std, chrome-covered Holy Diver set, D'Addario 10-52s
Amp: Engl Savage 120, Mesa Recto 2x12" (Vintage 30s)
FX: TC Electronic G-Major (chorus/rev/delay on clean channel), BBE 482 (overdrive channel), Morley Bad Horsie (very briefly)
Mic/Recording: Shure SM57, Presonus BlueTube, Fostex MR16HD
Enjoy :)

Wow!!! I like it! Maybe a little bit too bassy, but its great!
-
Cool
-
too scooped and bassy but definitely got potential
-
Got an early DT sound going there, but much thicker. I quite like it.
-
waaaaaaay too bassy. decent riffs, but use a Low Cut filter by all means :P
-
 Perhaps I did overdo it a bit :)
FWIW I've changed almost my entire recording setup (as well as my amp!) since I last recorded anything, so still getting used to the new gear.
Probably one of the most significant changes was getting "proper" studio headphones (Beyer DT100). I was using some Panasonic HiFi headphones before which colour the sound, adding a lot of bass, so what I used to heard wasn't a million miles away from what HiFi speakers were doing to the sound on playback. With the DT100s it didn't sound that bassy when I recorded - in fact I was hitting the strings as hard as I could because I thought it needed more "oomph"
Oh well, you get the idea - Holy Divers can go m***********g heavy
PS: For those who didn't get the title, this clip is loosely derived from a Rob Halford song called "Laid to Rest" on the first Fight CD...

Agreed. It certainly has the chug and drive required, just maybe a little too much bass.
Try re-recording and turning the bass down, that may be all you need.

I'd like to hear them with more mids dialled in, way too scooped for my tastes. Plenty of chunk in the low end though.

It's brutal  awesome work as always Antag!

I think if he lowered the bass a bit that would improve the mids more than you think too, but yeah the mids could definitely come up.

I like it, sounds a lot like Jerry Cantrell. :D

That's really good, quite moody.
It reminds me of the soundtrack of Vidocq (might not ring a bell as it is a French movie, not sure it has been subtitled or dubbed) But basically the music was helping creating the thick and heavy ambiance of the backstreet basement of 18th century Paris. It was working really well as the movie is a sci-fi / crime story of 3 century ago.
For further reference think of a band like Apocalyptica (the one that used to do Metallica covers with cellos and other distorted classical instruments.

It's bassy, but if you used a multi band compressor to control the bass end it'd be fine, if you have one. Anyhow, it's good playing and tone regardless, and you can see that they have quite some power to them.

I never knew the Savage could sound like that, I thought it was more along the lines of the JCM800. I want one now, damn you!

Thanks for the comments everyone, here's take 2 :-)
The gear & setup was exactly the same, but I changed a few settings:
On the Savage, turned the bass down by 1 & the mid up by 1
On the BBE turned the "Lo Contour" down by 1
On the mic preamp engaged the 80hz filter
Still a little bassy, but less than take 1. Enjoy :)

A little too gainy for my taste but the core tone is really good. Great clip.
