I used to have a smokey in the 90's but never had the chance to put it through a proper speaker cab back then and i have to say it sounds better than i expected.
but really i suppose i just brought it for the Vince Ray connection - we can blaim Jonathan for that since i had some of his strings last year. Oh and i have been wearing some vince ray voodoo boots for the last 6 months

They're ace aren't they!
-
I keep on meaning to get me one of those little suckers, for amusment value.
I'd like to record a solo on a demo with it, too
-
How much died to keep this? Does it sounds 'ok'? I like the idea of it...
-
It sounds ok just as it is but with the volume up full the little speaker struggles as you would expect- through a speaker cab it sounds shockingly good!! I have yet to try it in fornt of my matamp but it should be fun
It really is a great lesson in using your guitars volume and tone controls as they are the only controls you have for it!! so really to get the most out of it you need good quality volume and tone controls with a nice even taper

I bought a 'normal' Smokey a few years ago while in New York with TO :)
Plugged straight into a cab it has a nice 'classic rock' crunch to it, but plugged into the front of a valve amp it's instant heavy Sabbath/Sludge fuzz tone
-
Is easy to find they? in the official site says only one dealer in UK and I didn't find one 'real' store of them, only online...
-
How loud are they? :D
-
Louder than you would expect but still neighbour friendly - untill its plugged into a cab!!
I got this one on ebay but they are the sort of thing that can be picked up in loads of guitar shops
i just went on the website and saw you could buy the box, decorate it and send it back for them to make into an amp - i may have to get some WV smokey amps made!!!
really if you want to use it a lot the plastic ones are better because its hard to change the battery on these without teh box wearing out - thats what happened to my original one i think
-
Using a Big D (or similiar) in front of a Smokey and a 4x12 will give you a great bedroom practice tone/volume. I keep a Smokey and 4x12 at my singer's house for writing sessions. Just need to bring a pedal and guitar, and it's instant metal!!
-
Hummm yes I see it about the custom ones... perhaps I can find a strange box made from steel, I don't remember if it was from cigarretes or tea things... I'll search too the specs of the cig. box, I don't smoke, so I didn't understand the sizes they had speak...
-
I bought one at LGS a few years ago-good fun and I use it a lot. As Wez says, it teaches you to use the volume and tone controls.

Audiotoyz are the UK distributor
I can get hold of them if anyone wants one.....
Can probably get hold of the voodoo one as well
Should get Vince to do me a design for a Feline one

I have a old hofner body in my workshop that never made it into being a guitar - been meaning to turn it into some a proper rockabilly guitar for ages but havn't got around to it yet. Maybe some point soon! i could even do it to match the smokey packet!!

Which amp is that and is it any good?

So what kinda sound do those Smokeys get? I'm currently using a V-Amp 2 through PC speakers as my uni practise amp and its a bit cr@p, would a Smokey be an improvement on it for a basic rock tone? I'm thinking I should get either one of those or a Valvetronix of some kind. Theres also the idea of a Harley Benton GA5/valve jr clone with some pedals in front.
I'm on the ground floor and the room on the end next to the kitchen so I think I am able to make a bit more noise than if I were on an upstairs floor as theres less people to annoy - plus the guy in the room next to me is a guitarist anyway so wouldnt be too bothered :P
-
valvetrinics are good alrounder on a budget..huge step up from vamp...also have a control on back to control master out..and a di to record
-
Was thinking of the 30w one as it has the variable wattage selector I think, meaning it can probably get a better sound at low volume than the lower wattage ones, which also have smaller speakers. They go for fairly cheap on ebay by the looks of things :)
-
sorry didn't explain myself well...attenuator that was the word I was looking for *L*...they do sound good....ain't a true valve amp....but for the money are very good

Interesting. I'm looking forward to the 'Wez Hofner rockabilly conversion' thread.
