I'm entertaining the idea of putting together a guitar around a sinner bridge. For a 'different' extreme metal sound (make a change from bridge humbuckers). Any of you guys know of any cheap but acoustically decent, well put together 3Sc guitars I should keep an eye out for? What woods go well with the sinner?
Its just an experiment at this stage so ~200 with no regard for the quality of the pickups seems about right.
-
Some of the squires ain't bad if your ripping pickups out...or Yam Pacifica's
-
I was thinking pacifica, but dont they all have a bridge HB?
-
ahh there something I never noticed could have sworn I'd seen one with all singles...anyways nothin a cheap pickguard or pickupring convertor http://www.allparts.uk.com/catalogue/product_info.php?cPath=91014&products_id=11771 won't solve
-
might be a little expensive, but what about PRS SE EG? can be got with either 3 single coils or a humbucker at the bridge.
-
Thanks blue, but I looked it up and I dont like the shape. Too jagstang.
I'm liking the squire option the most at the moment, I think.
-
is a couple of various models shapes colour...most have reasonable necks....need better pickups but hey thats what your doing
-
Yamaha pacifica's are SWEET guitars, all you need is a new scratcplate to make it 3sc
-
Vintage Strat copies are worth a look too. They've had consistantly good reviews in the past for build quality and playability, and they're less than £180. http://www.jhs.co.uk/vintageelectric.html to se them
-
mmm tried the lp and sg copies they ain't bad for the price
-
Thanks for reminding me about vintage, Pagan!
I remember playing a couple of their ~200£ guitars and thinking they werent half bad at all for the price! Good shout :!:

This Tokai looks crackin, just needs a 3x SC scratchplate... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Tokai-custom-super-strat-pearlescent-white-floyd-rose_W0QQitemZ120165008734QQihZ002QQcategoryZ112670QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

And this is even better (Silver Series Squier)... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FENDER-SQUIER-SILVER-SERIES-STRAT-ELECTRIC-GUITAR_W0QQitemZ140161473257QQihZ004QQcategoryZ33039QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Vintage are okay but the two SGs I owned were very shoddy.
Aria strat copies are nice for modding, mine is made of alder rather than plywood and sounds decent.
-
Hey, HTH, those Corts have exactly the vibe I want! Strat shape, but a bit meaner looking.
Just need a play-test/inspection and if it passes a 3sc mirrored pickguard.
I'll be hunting one of them down. Not a bad new price on thomann either (~220)
-
That Tokai Strat is cool, I have an old Tokai catalogue with that same guitar on the cover.
The Cort reminded me of an Aria Knight Warrior - and I found this, with a Kahler to boot:

My two recommendations have already been mentioned: Squiers and Pacificas.
It's probably worth sticking a little more on the budget and look at some Japanese Strats or maybe even a Mexican, some of the Mex's aren't that bad.
-
I've just pimped up a Squier Affinity Strat (£125-ish new, I got it used for £35!!!) and that's a nice little guitar for no money. If you're going with hot pickups, the woods used make less of a difference to the tone so cheap guitars are ideal for this.
-
are you willing to go second hand, mark? i know over here i've spotted a few tokai strats for around £250... MIJ, extremely nice. More of a vintage feel, though, so might not suit you. Worth bearing in mind, though, if you can go second hand...
-
Second hand is my preference, really.
I dont mind it being a bit vintage looking. I'd like this guitar to look a little more sedate and traditional than my normal fare, so classic strat shape or very similar, possibly with a bit of an 'edge' (not the trem! I mean like a mirrored pickguard or something). Then stick a sinner in it and tune it to drop B or A and unleash unholy metal on it.
Tokai would also be great. There are too many options for this!
-
Squier Affinity's are well worth your money.
What about some of the cheaper Dean models - the Avalanche Zone S for example?
-
i meant vintage "feel"- like, 21 frets, vintage radius, narrow frets etc. if you're ok with that, then the second-hand tokai would be my recommendation. it looks exactly like a strat, basically, with a slightly differently-shaped headstock... i tried one head to head with a MIM fender strat, absolutely no comparison.
Good luck at any rate. :D

They do look decent enough - those Wilkinson bridges take a fair bit of whammy abuse too
I reckon it'd scream with a Sinner in the bridge.
oh, I've been meaning to ask if you've head a band called Six Feet Under. My mate copied me their Commandment album and it's f'in awesome. Just wondered if you'd heard of 'em since you seem to favour the more brutal end of the musical spectrum

I have a Tokai Superstrat - great guitar, needs a refret now though...and of course I would love to drop some BKP's into it :) just gotta win the lottery!
-
If you can find an old Fenix, then they're really good for the money. I'm currently in the process of nicking the wifes uncles. I'm faily sure that they used to make Squires in the same factory (or maybe even strats, I can't remember) but Fenix kept nicking the good wood. The strat copy I have is much heavier than a strat and feels a bit chunkier in the body. It's also got stacked HB's.
It should be rewired next week :D

For a moment, I thought that said undies. :|

What are westfields like? Other than really cheap (hence me looking at them  )
