Hi All
Just treated myself to a new G12H for my JCM800 combo. Well happy - the tonal balance is so much better, fatter bottom and much smoother mids - really does my Crawler'd strat justice :)
I did an a/b recording just so i had a reference for it using an sm57 straight onto the amp (at bedroom volume), slightly offset (not its sweet spot, but easier to replicate) which Ive posted here - i found celestions site slightly annoying in that none of the clips are the same so you couldnt do a direct comparison of how the sound changes from speaker to speaker. I thought i would post them for anyone thinking about changing speakers.

Good comparison and fine tone.
You can really hear the extra detail in the upper mids from the G12H. I'm a G12M man myself but I'd love to try a mix of M's and H's in 2X12
-
The G12H sounds so much better! G75 sounds boxy and nasal to me. I'm a fan of G12Hs as well, though I may still swap one of them in my 2x12 out for a v30 as the Laney could do with a bit more upper mids. Just before I sold my old cab (with eminence in) I tried it out quickly and it sounded awful compared to the G12H cab.
-
i got a g12h and a v30 in my jcm800 combo - they work so much better than the stock shitee; i was amazed
-
My biggest nightmare G1275s - however I love all the others; G12M25, Vintage30, 12H30, G12-65 are all great speakers.
I used to have a mix of V30/H30 and now run 12M25/12-65, I dig both but prefer the latter.
-
That's a really useful comparison; it's not often you hear exactly the same input though two different speakers.
I know that the G12-75 comes in for a lot of stick sometimes but it has it's place in the general scheme of thing otherwise Celestion wouldn't continue making it.
If, for instance, you play a Les Paul from the really shitety period when Gibson, and Epiphone; by association, were overly obsessed with muddy middle and bass tones the extended top of the G12-75 could be the answer to a maidens prayer
-
Good recordings dude - actually liked 'em both!
-
As ever it's horses for courses- I didnt dislike the 75, but it doesnt have the tonal balance for me, but of you want more honk then no problem! Down side is, I cannot turn the wick all the way up now, or the speaker will be joining me in the outside world as its only a 30 watter :( however I am thinking of putting a vintage 30 in my laney AOR30 and so if i ever (unlikely now!) needed to go full out i could spread it across both :)
PS - I'd be very interested in hearing an a/b on a g12h and a vintage30 (or any other speaker for tht matter...)

If I could do you clips I would :(
The V30 needs to REALLY be pushed before it shines. My JTM-45 (40ish watts) with a 2x12 V30 cab (120ish watts) sounds a bit naff and honky. The same cab with my 100w "Super Klipp" sounds fantastic!
You always need at least 50% of the speaker's rating being pushed to get them to work as intented.
I have the G12H Heritage / Vintage 30 combo in an X-pattern my 4x12. A great big fat rocking tone 8)
-
Ok, I'm jealous as hell! (insert a 'jealous' emotion here!) had to sell my 4x12 as needed the space and I wasn't using it for much. that combo of speakers sounds like it would suit the JCM800 to the T!
-
Yep, I reckon it would. I've not had chance to crank the Super Klipp with the 4x12 but I think it would be a superb combination. I'll be interested to try it with the JTM45 too...
-
G'day chaps. I'm a noob on here so be gentle with me. Here's some speaker comparison files done by Southbayampworks (hence quite a lot of scumback clips) that I've "collected". They include quite a number of vintage Celestion H and M clips as well as a few current prod heritage H and M clips. the link is http://www.box.net/shared/palfc0jz7q/rss.xml
I also remember hearing some great comparative clips on the Matamp forum between H's, M's and V30's. but I can't find them now for the life of me. If someone else can, hopefully they can stick up a link.

Enjoy stretching out that 4x12, you're getting me to the point of saying stuff the mortgage and getting a V30 to put in my laney so I can have a 2x12 at least! :)
Hey alan - welcome on board and thanks for the links, some good stuff in there :)
-

I'd be very interested to to hear that as I've got an AOR30 lurking around. Have you upgraded the valves in it at all?
The JCM clips are great by the way, I like the bite of the g75 and the smoothness of the g12. Something in between would be perfect for me.

Ive just revalved the Laney, but with bog standard valves - I could do you a clip of the laney through the G12 if you wanted (in fact Ive just had a play with it through the g12 - sounds pretty darn good). What style do you like?! ;)
-
If you mix a G12T75 with a G12h does that balance things out - highs and lows?
-
That might work...
-
Give the G12H30 a good 5 months of constant playing, these speakers take soo long to break in but once they're broken in.. Best speaker in the world.
I really dig the G12H30, Im using a V30 at the moment but it's deffinatly being considered for a swap over sometime soon.
You using the 70th Anniversary or the Heritage Version?

You using the 70th Anniversary or the Heritage Version?
Yeah Kevin - which one you got?
-
I would have loved to get the heritage, but went for the 70th anniversary for economic reasons (award session also doing them as a special at the moment :) )
Good to hear the speaker will get even better, but the amount I get to play will be years before I've broken it in :(
Mixing the 75 with the G12 would in my opinion work well, if you wanted a bit more midrange but being a cheaper speaker it doesn't convey the complexity of notes as well.

I got a brand new heritage for sale, unused in Seconds Out if interested. Never been used, box opened to take pics for ebay. Chapest price on ebay by miles.
-
i fully agree :) i've played G12H30 heriatage, anniversary, G12H100, and G12Hs from the 70s... they all sounded different of course, but enoyed them all. theres definately a similar basic tone. i love the warmth and that grittyness in the midrange.

Something similar to your original clips would be good as it'll make it easier to hear any comparisons, but on the other hand if you could combine old school thrash with some Holdsworth legato and Gambale sweeps that would also be cool ;)
I find my Laney is a bit loose in the bass and lacks real crunch. It could be due to the speaker, old valves, the fact that it doesn't get cranked or because I once opened it up, messed with the trim pots and got myself electrocuted as a reward.
-
OK, so that was some hammer time phrases with a bit of widdly on the side to go?! (Editors note - this is regarding my playing rather than the influences described!)
Well, I would say that my Laney even through the G12H doesnt do tight bass..its a little 'undefined' when playing chords down on E string, and i wouldnt describe it as crunchy either (but that what I got the JCM for :) ) it kind of reminds me a little a of a legacy amp from what i remember from a quick test a while back). Serioulsy, next time I get a chance to do some micing up, I will get you a sound bite.
-
Laney clip as promised - got a bit carried away noodling with it after it has been in a corner for so long :)
Recorded with an SM57 slightly offset at about 45 degrees, didnt have time to play around to find best spot but gives good representation of the sound. Hope this helps in the decision making.
