we did a test to compare them at a friend's studio..... built quality is very similar. Also we recorded a clip of both
ES-335:
335 - eSnips, share anything (http://www.esnips.com/doc/59fbd5e6-cd6c-4a78-96a3-5ce570ed6790/335)
Japanese Epiphone:
riviera - eSnips, share anything (http://www.esnips.com/doc/1069eebe-f3f1-4f28-aaac-7f44da33fca6/riviera)
Both guitars are stock recorded through a FEnder Hot Rod DEluxe.
Let us know your impressions.....

Tough one. Both certainly pretty guitars. The sounds are almost identical, at least my ear. The ES-335 sounded just that little bit thicker for it to win in my book.

In my opinion the Epi sounds better.... clearer, warmer, nicer. Besides it's half the price of the Gibby. Hard to justify the price difference, really.
From a player point of view the epi wins handsdown. The only aspect that I envy about the Gibson is the nitro finish. Besides that I'd take the Epi anyday.

i have GAS for that studio. Would he pawn it off to me for 200 quid?

Thats the effect that mini humbuckers have, you either love them or are sadly mistaken ;)
Personally I prefer the (slightly) more single coil like sound
