Title: New Sony PS3 version on it's way -- and UK price cut!!
Post by: TwilightOdyssey on October 05, 2007, 06:38:52 PM
This just in:

UK,  October 5, 2007 - After weeks of speculation Sony has officially unveiled the lower-spec 40GB PlayStation 3 and has announced that it's heading to the UK on October 10 at the cut-down cost of 299 GBP. What's more, Sony is also slashing the cost of the 60GB PS3 down to 349 GBP.

The lower capacity hard drive aside, the entry level 40GB PS3 only has two USB ports (compared to the usual four), the multi-memory card port has been removed and the machine will not be backwards compatible with PlayStation 2 titles, because Sony reckons there has been "reduced emphasis placed on this feature amongst later purchasers of PS3".

In addition to the new model, Sony is replacing the existing Starter Pack with a new Value Pack, priced 349 GBP, for which you get a 60GB PS3, a SIXAXIS controller and two first-party titles - although exactly what games will be on offer has yet to be confirmed.

"As we approach our very first PlayStation Christmas, it is satisfying to be able to offer UK consumers the choice of two PlayStation 3 packages both now representing remarkable value," commented Ray Maguire, managing director of SCEUK, "We have a brand new 40GB machine that represents an excellent entry point into the world of high definition games and movies, and we have the fully featured 60GB machine being offered with two next generation gaming experiences at a highly competitive price."

Meanwhile, president of SCEE David Reeves added: "The introduction of the new PS3 has been the result of extensive research into the entertainment needs and preferences of the next generation of PS3 owners. It has allowed us to deliver an extremely advanced, yet highly affordable High Definition entertainment system, configured to the needs of the next generation of European PS3 owners. PS3 has always been the device of choice for the discerning gamer and entertainment seeker, and the new PS3 is more than ever the perfect High Definition entertainment system."

not bad!

I'm 99% going to pull the trigger on one at Xmas, after i've paid for my new HD tv!!

Would still be an expensive paperweight until that killer exclusive game arrives though (my 360 is so far delivering the likes of Sega Rally and Skate for me) but the next Metal Gear and Gran Tourismo... oooh yeah! Next Year could be the year of the PS3... don't know what MS has after PGR4, Halo 3, Bioshock....tough to follow.

Hopefully the cut price one will keep the decent Blu Ray playing abilities and all the HD connectivity... it sucks about the backwards compatibilty, i really would like to pick up God Of War, Devil May  Cry 3, GT4 and enjoy those, as i never really got into consoles, was always a PC Gamer.

i got lucky enough to have a friend that just recently sold me a 60 gig at $100 bucks. It is worth it. Graphics are incredible on HD!

If you want backwards connectivity, all the crazy memory card options, etc, you have to go with the 60GB.

From what I've read, Sony is only making the 40GB because ppl are b!tching about the price.

To me, it's like PS Lite. I'd rather have real ale, thank you. :)

Graphics are incredible on HD!

Depends on the game.

Lair and Heavenly Sword both look fantastic in 1080i and above. Most PS2 titles are still 4:3 and I find the image size annoying.

Folklore looks great, but has some framerate issues.

Uncharted is where I'm putting my money for graphics on this side of 2008, and on Eye Of Judgement as far as fun-factor is concerned.

We are kinda next gen here (42" 1080i Plasma, 360, PS3, Wii, DS, PSP), and as a result of some play testing (reduced since I got my guitar) I still think the 360 is the best console for the hardcore gamer, and the Wii is the most 'fun'. The PS3 rarely gets switched on these days.

Lego Star Wars 2 is the most repeatable game ever, me and my wife have finished this 3 times now :)

Oblivion is the most value for money in terms of hours of play.

GTA4 is out on both consoles next year and is the only upcoming that may have had me buying a PS3 if it was PS3 only (and I didn't have one already).

I'd still rather have my 360 :) Never liked playstations, the controllers are awful. Plus, as far as I'm aware, the PS3 doesnt have acheivements, so whats the point?! :P

That background music makes me want to throttle the little 2D bar-stewards. Could they possibly have made the soundtrack more inane?

yeah i agree the wii is most fun, i have that too. But getting a ps3 gave me reason to beg my dad to let me play on our projection screen (which is i think 128"). All i've played so far is Motorstorm, but the graphics really are impressive, not to mention the physics.

yeah i can't stop playing. and i can't help but practically scream every time i crash, it looks so real! but yeah, i don't know why more people don't get projection screens- they're cheaper than most 50" plasmas and whatever, and you can make them however big you want. I guess space is often a concern...

Space and walls, not many people have that much white wall space in their lounge, or house for that matter, or you have to put up a projection screen which looks s**t. Projectors also have a reputation for blowing bulbs, which is annoying and then expensive.
