Hi - when soldering a loaded scratch plate to the strat guitar lead input connector, does it matter what "terminal" bits the white and black wires from the scratch plate are soldered too?
Thanks
-
Yep.
One is for the earth, the other is the live bit.
Wire it wrong and you will have a hell of a lot of noise, hums like a bar-steward but you still hear the notes you play.
The live wire (white i think) goes to the inner lug, the one attached directly to the incoming jack. The earth goes to the other one.
Hope that helps, im tired and bogged down with the cold. And I had to work it out myself, not using any rules

cheers badger!

... and if its wrong you will know soon enough and can just swap the wires!! Its not a big deal though you only need to unscrew the jack plate to swap them round
If you look closely at the jack you will see one tab is connected to the inner ring (sleeve) of the socket and one tab connects to the long tip.
Live goes to tip, earth goes to sleeve

...And in swoops Wez to explain it perfectly in two sentences. I'm so jealous of your eloquence.

nah, i just said exactly what you did a slightly different way, it all helps when someone is looking at something new.
anyway, usually i am the babbling fool no-one can understand - all kind of makes sense in my head though!!
-
Same here, It all made sense when I was doing it myself, describing it was a struggle though.
Although when I was bodging around with the input jack stuff I wired it wrongly first then had to figure out my mistake. Took all afternoon.

what are the white/black leads - which one is live etc?
They should teach you how to solder in pickups at school!
-
i guess white is live and black is ground but i havnt done one of these before. Basically, one of them will come from the back of a pot and one will come from a tag on the volume pot. the one that comes from the tag is the live, the one that is connected to the back of a pot is ground

BKP white for hot, black for earth.
White is hot,
black is not.

Cool thanks
Found this diagram that's really useful (ignore where it comes from!)
