...do you guys use?
I'm been using orange tortex .6mm, as I like a bit of flexibility, but they seem to wear out quickly.
Any other recommendations?
-
i really like the dunlop jazz II's (or do I use the III's...?). I dunno. The small ones. They seem more comfortable for faster playing and alternate picking.
-
The big red dunlop jazz IIIs. trouble is, I like the point on them, but it wears out too fast and they only make the ultex ones in small.
-
Dunlop Jazz IIIs in red or Ultex Jazz IIIs.
-
the little black Jazz IIIs are good for me. everyone else complains of them being too small when they pick mine up :?
-
either the tortex purple 1.14's or the ultex ones
those are my faves they dont seem to flex when picking fast
-
I use the Dunlop Riffs, green for electric (.96mm) and orange or red for acoustic stuff.
Nylon i think, and pretty soft, the tortex stuff just wears out and is rubbish. Same for the Dunlop stuff with a crocodile on it, each pick lasted me about a week after I bought a packet of 10.
-
I like the big Black Jazz III the point is nice and its nice and stiff.
-
JAZZ III MO $%ZERZ!!!

sure you do.
-
Jazz IIIs are good, but Jazz Stubbies ftw.
Buy them in packs of 25 on Thomann - They are too lovely.
-
Tortex greens.
-
why is it that everyone seems to use jazz IIIs, but they are so much harder to find than the tortex .73?
Ebay tortex (http://search-desc.ebay.co.uk/search/search.dll?sofocus=bs&sbrftog=1&catref=C6&from=R10&_trksid=m37&satitle=dunlop+tortex+0.73mm&sacat=-1%26catref%3DC6&fts=2&a6=-24&a65691=-24&a14=-24&a10244=-24&alist=a6%2Ca65691%2Ca14%2Ca65692%2Ca10244%2Ca65693&pfmode=1&reqtype=1&gcs=2303&pfid=3368&pf_query=dunlop+tortex+0.73mm&sargn=-1%26saslc%3D3&sadis=200&fpos=Postcode&sabfmts=1&ga10244=10425&ftrt=1&ftrv=1&saprclo=&saprchi=&sass=&fsop=1%26fsoo%3D1&coaction=compare&copagenum=1&coentrypage=search)

Especially the big ones... the XL series, which I like.
-
Dunlop Ultex .70ish for acoustic, Dunlop Tortex 1mm for electric, Tortex 1.14mm for baritone.

there ya go

Red Jazz III's. Thinking of changing to Ultex Jazz III's soon.
-
Fender California Clears, Heavy. Or something similar, like Dunlop Gels. I don't like nylon picks, or anything with a very sharp point.
For some reason transparent picks sound better to me than solid-colour ones. My imagination, I'm sure.

AHA!
still not the large ones, sadly.
need to look to the US for that (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/New-10-Pack-Dunlop-Jazz-III-XL-Picks-Red-1-38mm_W0QQitemZ300157538367QQihZ020QQcategoryZ85854QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD2VQQcmdZViewItem)

Why dont you just buy them from Here (http://www.stringsdirect.co.uk/Catalogue/ViewProduct.aspx?productId=328)

I've been using stubby 3mm lately.
I also like jazz III and tortex jazz 1.14s.
Small picks with a sharp point are much more accurate and controlled, I think. (But you can still beat the cr@p out of strings if you want  ).
-
Black Jazz III's always :D
-
Tortex sharp 1.5 white.
-
I use 1mm black dunlop nylon, love 'em - perfect for me.
-
Dunlop 3mm stubby triangles
-
although i don't use picks (i'm a bassist, so its fingerstyle for me!) the guitarists in my band use snarling dog brain picks (you get a few in a lil box)
they have MEGA grip!
-
Ultex Jazz 3 and Herco (heavy) thumbpicks 8)

yeah the only thing i don't like about the Dunlop jazz picks is that they do get quite slippery, and they're already small enough to begin with...

I find the Jazz ultex much easier to hang onto, much better than the other Jazz III's.

i was thinking of maybe super-gluing a little piece of fabric or something to my pick to make it less slippery. I like the pick, just too slippery. what could i use?
-
Could heat up a knife and burn an X on each side. It's the best I can come up with right now :?

or i could just etch an X in i guess. thats a good enough idea for now. i wonder how a bit of gauze pad material would work...

B.K.Ps own 1.14 mm heavy celluloid, ( Re-badged D'Andreas ? ).
I was using 'Planet Waves' 1.14mm celluloid, but the BKP badged ones have a softer sounding attack, which I prefer for playing clean and mellow.

-
Tortex 0.73 for me - I like to wear them down a bit before using them 'seriously' and when they get too worn, just nail file them up a bit :) I find they grip fine..once they are warmed up.
-
I use the BKP you get free with the pickups...Yes I am a tight git.
Also the tiny green tortex ones they're nice for fast riffage and pinched harmonics. Dunno what make they are.
-
I have an extensive pick collection and change them depending on my mood but I am currently favouring (you guessed it!) JD Jazz III, I like the black and the red and both regular and XL sizes. I also like using JD nylons if playing legato as they have very little pick attack, or I use tortex orange or yellow if I want extra Paul Gilbert style pick attack.
-
drill or skewer a hole through the pick, makes it easier to hold on to.
I used to do that, but seem to be ok at gripping them now
-
big jazz IIIs for me as well, I don't really have a preference between black and red, I mostly use red though (probably cos I got more of them)
recently got a 2mm big stubby, looks like a jazz III but it's purple and see through, there is a slightly curve on the flat sides so I think it comes off the string a tiny bit easier, I'm still experimenting and working out which I prefer

Those 2mm Stubbies are what I use EXCLUSIVELY - No pick comes even close - Absolutely love them.
That being said, I tend to wear them down quite quickly - Which is amazing considering how stiff they are!
-
do you not find the big stubbies too small? I use the 3mm triangles, they're a much better shape and size (they do a 2mm version, too, along with a 1.5 I think...)
-
I like the large rounded triangle shape - feel like I get a much better grip on it than the standard or teardrop shapes.
Mostly I use Clayton Delrin .73 or .88 - they never snap & are long wearing. Also have some in Acetal 1.26mm to bludgeon my 13-62 strung drop-Bb tuned V with :)
Thinking of moving up to 1mm ones for my standard tuned guitars, but I still have a huge bag of .73s left...

Hell no, smaller = small contact area = faster and better contact
-
Jazz 3 = Poo, used to use them back in my shredding days but grew sick of them for rhythm - did get a load of mates onto them though.
Now - Dunlop Green Tortex - thick enough for riffage and flexible enough for solos. Lots of people here seem to be complaining about them wearing out, I smack my strings really hard live/practice/recording and I've never had one wear down on me....
....then again, I've never owned one for more than a week!
Andy!

Hi-ho - "which strings" is a whole 'nother thread!
Give me a minute...
-
i wonder how long untill a gilbert fan mentions black and decker

I think the lighter your picking technique the thicker the pick you use
when I first started playing I used light 0.73 tortex (the yellow ones), I was a really heavy picker though since I didn't even use an amp, now I try and play as light and effortlessly as possible

I would say the less experienced generally whack the strings with the pick and so use a lighter pick because they are less controlled.
though this doesn't apply the other way round, you can be controlled, but hit the strings hard, and use a lighter pick
-
I use the BK 1.14 mm celluloid 1s.
Liked the 1s that came free so much, that I now buy them in 30s from Tim :)
-
B.K.Ps own 1.14 mm heavy celluloid
Is this the one you get when you buy pickups?

Me too, used them for years!

Hiya Martin,
Yes , I got the heavy 1.21 mm - ( my error in assuming 1.14mm previously ) one with my Mules, but a lighter one ( 0.84 mm ? ) with my Stormy Mondays.
Like forum member Brow, I then sent off for more of the one I liked. They are listed in the BKP shop page under 'Accessories'.
Regards,

Switched to DAVA picks recently....nice rubber coating on the upper section for plenty of grip and if you flip it around and use one of the rubber coated corners it gives a unique soft funky sound
-
Dunlop Nylons 0.73 mainly but also one thinner/thicker, been using those so long i cant change even if i wanted anymore lol. They do have a very nice grip and are flexible but if i bend them a bit between my fingers they become much firmer. Nice tool to have imo.
