Title: New SG pickup
Post by: centaurporn on October 11, 2007, 03:38:49 AM
Here is my situation.

I have a Gibson Goth SG.  I found that the stock 490t was not hot enough for my playing style.  I play a large variety of music ranging from SRV, Dead kenedeys, Pink Floyd, to Lamb of god.  I have my strat for a lot of the bluesy and rock stuff  I guess so that is not relevant.  I am looking for a good metal pickup and well...you have too many too choose from. :o

I have read nothing but good things about Bare Knuckle pickups and I think it is time to give it a shot.  As I said the 490T was just not hot enough.  I replaced the stocks with an EMG-81, and 85...Big mistake.  Way to sterile and maybe a little over the top for my taste.  Sounded great playing old metal but that is not all I am looking for.  Back to the stocks and where I started.

I am leaning towards the warpig but I can't seem to make up my mind so I want you to do it for me.  I love surprises.  I want something nice and crunchy, mmm growling lows.

So the 490t is not enough, The EMG is well....horrible.

I realize I am going to get raped with no lube trying to get it to Canada...but from what I have been hearing...It is going to be worth it.

The 490T is not a ceramic pickup but has an alnico 5 magnet, if your looking for anything similar but then is a 'superhot' version take a look at the crawler or rebel yell. Not standard metal gear but maybe something to consider.

tim usually recommends the warpig for sgs
your guitar would look perfect if he makes a warpig with a black closed cover (like gibson iommi pickup)  :D

maybe a holy diver or a painkiller with alnico 8 instead of a ceramic magnet
the regular holy diver already sounds really massive
alnico 8 would turn it into a monster, specially on the low mids
not really a good idea for a les paul as it may get a bit muddy, but for a sg i think it would fit it greatly, maybe better than a warpig

Thanks for the info guys and girls.  What I am looking for is something a little hotter than the 490.  But not the EMG 81 sound, I am looking for lots of bottom end growl and not the trebley bite of the 81.  Something a little more organic sounding with dynamics.  I was very unhappy with the actives.

I dont play a whole lot of lead, Just riffage.

I would try a Warpig. You can get the four conductor and coil tap/split.
