Title: Which Engl?
Post by: crimesofpassionandy on October 16, 2007, 07:58:14 AM
Like I mentioned in a post below, I am currently using an Engl Blackmore as my main amp now. I've just sold my 5150II which was my amp af choice for a while, untill I got the Engl. I now want to buy another Engl backup amp but without breaking the bank. I've had a Powerball before, but that was a little too scooped sounding for me. I had the mid contols maxxed out, so I was possibly thinking maybe the Fireball, or at a push another Blackmore I guess. I play mainly 7 string now, so I want an amp that's good at keeping the old bottom end in tow without sounding baggy. Oh, as well as a dirty channel, it needs a decent clean channel too!!

Well, Savage is the ultimate amp in many respects.

You couldn't go wrong with getting a Savage and using your Blackmoore as backup :p

Go Blackmore!!!

or get yourself a E 570 Special Edition pre-amp, and then save for an ENGL Power amp... that set up BLEW my mind when I tried a mates gear.

I've got a powerball and my mid's cranked as well, but I like it. I compensate by using really midrangy pickups.

Why get another Engl? The difference will not be THAT big. Rather get a different make, what about a Marshall?

^ I agree. unless you need it as an exact backup for gigging or something, and need it to do very similar tones, there would be a bunch of other options... soldano avenger, cornford, etc. etc.

what kind of money are you talking, though?

If your main amp is an ~£800 Blackmore & you could "at a push" get another one, then presumably the ~£1000 Powerball, ~£1200 Savage, ~£1400 Invader & ~£2000 SE would all "break the bank"?

If you really must have an Engl, how about a Screamer?

I'd like to get an amp that sounds pretty close to the sound I have. I like to get one rig that I know will do what I want. I don't really need the options that the Savage or Powerball offers really. It's not really about the money either if theres than amp that I really liked I guess..... but I really like the Blackmore. I've spent big money on boutique amps before and most of them just dissapoint or are unreliable, etc.  I've had Soldano's before too and for me the Engl is a better all round amp, however I guess Im not adverse to trying another brand if there's something worth a look. It will be a backup after all.

I'm currently a 5150 II user, and am looking for a new amp, what's  better about the blackmore? Sell it to me :D

Gradually, I found I wanted more bite out of the 5150II, so the mids came down and the treble and presence gradually went up which chocked the tone of the amp so the amp kinda stopped working for me anymore. Also the low notes on my 7 string were becoming a lost cause so it was time to look elsewhere. The Blackmore is a crisp, brighter sounding amp with a much tighter feel to the bottom end.  Also, the amp reacts better to the guitar when you turn the volume down or change to a single coil setting. It actually sounds like a single coil, which didn't really happen on the Peavey. It's more transparent I guess. I don't use as much gain on the Blackmore as I did on the 5150. The amp just seems to have more balls and power to carry the sound, rather than relying on sheer gain!. In my search I've gone thru Mesa's, Soldano's, Peavey's and Cornfords before I found this amp, and it's awesome!!

In the past i made alot research in the Engl family. The Savage 120 was finally my chooise over the Powerball etc and  still is the AMP! not that mid thing you are talking about..Made a tube change on it to JJs and i'm in crunch, attack heaven!
